Cayenne - some details you might not know

    1. the Cayenne Turbo gets a bi-xenon light which is able to follow curves (depends how you turn the steering wheel).
    2. PCM will be standard on the Cayenne Turbo (phone module optional on ROW cars)
    3. a 4-zone electronic climate control will be optional on all Cayenne
    4. a offroad design package will be available (incl. the spare wheel on the rear)
    5. tire pressure control system available as an option (might be standard in the US)
    6. the fuel tank has a capacity of 100 litres
    7. 6-speed Tiptronic
    8. manual will NOT be available for the Cayenne S in the first year of production
    9. Porsche entry & drive system: same as keyless-go on certain Mercedes models
    10. three different wheels will be available for the Cayenne Turbo: 18'' Cayenne Turbo, 19'' Cayenne Design and 20'' Cayenne SportDesign.
    11. two wood interior packages available, one of them is dark wood as on the ML55 (doesn't look as wood).
    12. factory pickup (highly recommended): a complete "adventure. The customer gets the change to drive with a pro driver in a Cayenne on Porsche's own off-road test track and then immediately to the high speed track to see how good the Cayenne is offroad AND onroad. A great experience for every potential Cayenne customer.
    13. stand-still heating package with remote control (not US!) available as an option
    14. BOSE HIFI system with 14 speakers incl. subwoofer and 350 W standard on the Cayenne Turbo
    15. six 12 V power sockets available all around the interior of the Cayenne
    16. park assist (front & rear) standard on the Cayenne Turbo
    17. on the Cayenne Turbo: integrated dry-sump lubrification system with double oil pump (suitable for track racing ).

Now I have to stop and go to work. More details maybe over the next few days.

Re: Cayenne - some details you might not know

The more I read about the Cayenne the more interesting it gets. After reading discussions on William's X5 and getting excited about the bimmer and my bad experience on ML I think I'll wait till Cayenne comes out and then make a wise decision on either X5 or the C S

    Get the Cayenne S

I have tons of details and information but I can't post it...yet.
Seems to be a great product, not a sports car but anyway...might be the perfect family car.

Oh, I forgot one option for the Cayenne Turbo: optional Sport Seats (front only) at no cost.

I also saw the available colors, very nice indeed.

Again: the Cayenne is no sports car but a nice addition to the Porsche customer who wants to have a Porsche family car.

I started to like the idea of a Porsche SUV but only if Porsche doesn't try to fool customers by telling them they're buying a SUV sports car. The Cayenne might be the sportiest SUV ever built but it is no substitute to a Porsche sports car.

For the Porsche hardliners among us, I'd suggest to look at the Cayenne as a product which flushes more money into Porsche's bank account and therefore assures more interesting sports car products over the next few years.

I've been told that if the Cayenne is a success, Porsche will not forget the sports car customers, on the contrary.
    Sounds good to me.

    Re: Get the Cayenne S

Wow Christian, you are an year in the future with the news!!!!!
    Congrats!!

And my car is no more arrived!!! mmmhhhh

    ciao

    Re: Get the Cayenne S

    RC,
have you any idea about the beginning of the deliveries?
I put a deposit in july (on the turbo but I will decide only when I will know all the options...which one you will choose :the S or the turbo?) and my dealer still don't know exactly ...he is telling me around beg. new year.
    Thank you very much

    Re: Get the Cayenne S

    RC,
Are there any exclusive child safety features for Cayenne? or just they offer safety for kids like MB and BMW like latches for infant seats and so forth?

Re: Cayenne - some details you might not know

Any ideas about offroad performance compared to Range Rover, Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc?

Any info about type and brand of tyres and the so called performance offroad package?

Do you know if you will be able to store gps points on the onboard navigation system, so you can add your offroad trails to the system?

And the difficult one..., is porsche going to race it like vw is doing with the touareg? which engine are they/should they use?

By the way, is the v8 diesel and v6 petrol engines confirmed? any more engines to come?

    Thanks,

    Ricardo

    Deliveries

First cars will be available at german dealers on the 7th december 2002. This is the official dealer presentation date over here in Germany. My dealer gets three Cayenne, two S and one Turbo. One S and the Turbo will be available for test rides. If things work out smoothly, I might be able to testdrive the Cayenne Turbo around the 9th or 10th december.

I think that first customer cars should be delivered around beginning of 2003.

    Child protection, GPS & racing

    To Ron:
"just" the ISOFIX latches for special child seats as on the ML and X5. But the Cayenne has a so called "curtain" airbag which covers the upper part of the window too. However I'm not sure this improves child protection.

    To Ricardo:
off-road performance is rumored to be excellent due to the electrically "detachable" swaybars and the high tech 4WD combined with sophisticated electronics. You can read more details about the Cayenne's 4WD here:

    Cayenne 4WD and more

I don't have details about the tires yet but as far as I heard, all tires are a special development for the Cayenne.
Especially on the Turbo but also on the "S", Porsche will be very strict about approved tires.
As far as I know, the offroad package doesn't include different tires but I'll get more details next week.
If it includes different tires (mud, all weather, etc.), I can imagine that there will be a speed limit in effect.

The only thing I heard about the Nav System is the fact, that there will be extensive map material available in a few months or so, even for some pretty exotic regions.
I don't know if you can store GPS waypoints but I could imagine that this is possible because the PCM and software on the Cayenne are different than on the Boxster/996.

I know that VW wants to race a Touareg special race version on the Marathon Worldcup and later on the Paris-Dakar Rallye and I can imagine that Porsche does the same too.
The V8 normally aspirated engine is the only one I can imagine for that kind of races but I guess only Porsche knows.
But to be serious: do you buy a SUV because it won a race? I don't.

The Diesel isn't confirmed yet as far as I heard. It seems there are still some voices which don't want to see a Diesel on the Cayenne. Most dealers seem to welcome a Cayenne Diesel and if I look at the german market, I think it would be a good idea. Personally, I hate the idea of a Porsche Diesel but I can't do anything against it, right? Another point: if Porsche said A with a SUV, they have to say B with a Diesel and probably C with a pickup later on if the Cayenne is successful.
Hard times for us Porsche "hardliners".

The V6 seems to be almost sure as an entry-level model. But it won't be available from the beginning. If the V8 and V8 Turbo sell well, the V6 might even not be released at all. A Diesel might be the better choice for a lot of potential customers. I hope Porsche knows to take the right decision, this is no easy job.

    Wow! Great job RC!

To those of us interested in the progress of the Cayenne, this was a small goldmine.

I don't know that they have to race the Cayenne off-road but it wouldn't hurt. They need to maintain the integrity of the vehicle, in some way, as a performance vehicle, a serious vehicle, and not just another Acura MDX. Why can't the Cayenne be a new area of performance for Porsche, a new dimension?

Re: Cayenne - some details you might not know

Great options... looks to me if the Cayenne Turbo come standard with those option, it might be a bargain...

how much is the Cayenne Turbo again? 80K US?

    Re: Deliveries

    Thank you !!

Re: Child protection, GPS & racing

About the brakes, i have read in porsche's site that the cayenne will have 18 inch front brakes. Isn't this impossible with 18 inch wheels?

If this is possible, will fitting aftermarket wheels of smaller sizes be a possibility, since the off road tyre offer for 18 inch wheels is almost non existant?

I know it's stupid, but racing the cayenne on something like the dakar would give some security about strenght and capabilities...even knowing that the racing cayenne would have been upgraded a lot...just like the 959...

    Cayenne Brakes

Maybe there is a little misunderstanding: Porsche means by 18'' brakes that the Cayenne has such huge brake discs in front, that a 18'' wheel is needed. Sorry for the confusion.
One reason why there won't be a 17'' wheel for the Cayenne Turbo and even winter tires have to be 18'' (which might be pretty expensive in the Cayenne Turbo's size).
I know this limits tire choices very much but anyway: as far as I understood, the Cayenne Turbo needs special tires which are approved by Porsche. Right now only one or max. two brands/types are approved anyway.
BTW: I heard that a special winter tire has been approved for the Cayenne Turbo too, don't have details yet but it should be V rated.

So forget about using a 17'' T rated mud tire on the Cayenne Turbo.

Yes, racing the Cayenne at Paris-Dakar would be pretty logical but I think a lot of Porsche customers would be upset if Porsche races the SUV but not the sports cars.
I suppose that, if the Cayenne is successful, Porsche will come back to the international arena of motorsports.

    Thanks RC, NT
