    PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

How good is the PCM? I am thinking about specifying it on a new Boxster. I have been advised not to bother with the telephone module as it is hassle to keep swapping SIM cards about and I don't use a phone much anyway.

Re: PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

With very little experience from other navigation systems I can say that in Europe the system works fine on the highways, whereas I am not always satysfied in the city - Living in Paris it might be the traffic....

With regards to the telephone module I am glad to have it, and though I can agree that it sometimes is a hassle to swap sim cards I would suggest you order an extra sim card from your operator.

All in all I would order the PCM if I was about to order a new Boxster.

    Good luck with your car.

Re: PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

Anyone know how the PCM is in the CGT? I have specified it in mine and am interested as to how it works compared to other nav systems, etc.

Re: PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

there is no PCM in the CGT.

I apologize, you are correct. I just looked at my order form again and it was never specified as PCM. What I am talking about is option 690, which is specified, verbatim, as "Porsche Online Pro CD Radio with Bose Sound System and Navigation."

I guess what I am truly asking is, what do they mean when they say "Navigation"?

Re: PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

To give you a good idea you can look at www.becker.de These units were used by Porsche earlier with a porsche logo instead of the Becker logo. I am not aware if it would be the one which is specified on your order, but guess your dealer could help with this matter.

Could you post some pictures of if when you receive the car ??

From the "Service Information -- 2004 Technik Introduction" book on the Carrera GT:

    "Navigation

The navigation system in the Porsche Online Pro has a fast route calculation function. This operates using using the route options entered and up-to-date traffic messages (TMC).

Voice output of the navigation system can be activated in the menu. The optical travel directions are given as pictograms in the radio display.

A navigation CD in the audio system CD drive is required for route calculation. When the route has been calculated, this CD can be taken out and replaced with a music CD."

    ---------------------------------

So, it seems as it gives right/left/straight instructions as one travels. No map display as in PCM.

Thanks, Mike. And to think...I had my Carrera GT book sitting right here the whole time and never bothered to think of looking in there. Sorry for making you type up the whole thing!

And of course I will post pictures of the car when I receive it. If I remember correctly, Mike said he was taking delivery in January 2005, which is exactly when mine is supposed to come in.

Re: PCM System (Factory Fit Navigation)

Chris, I knew that I had seen the Porsche Navigation system (not PCM) and just found it on the Swedish site. Here is a link, not sure it is the exact same, but otherwise suggest you go back to the Becker link I posted.

Mine has a "start of build" date of December, 2004. If I read the Porsche tea leaves correctly, this means an end-of-February or 1st-of-March delivery time for my CGT.

    Cheers,
