    Caymen - bust?

Is it just me, my part of the country, or the fact that I heard an advertisement on the radio yesterday promoting the Cayman - where I am thinking that this car is not selling? I have noticed them stacking up in the local dealership parking lot.

I have not seen too many on the road around here.

Has anyone else noticed that the Caymans are not selling as good as the Boxster or 911?

    Not here

They come in by the half-dozen on the truck and are gone over the next week at my dealer. Most are pre-ordered. If there's a problem it's with the base Cayman. If you buying one to save money, then go all the way and buy a base Boxster.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

Here's sales figures for one year ago. Document is dated February 2006. All I got. at least it's good for comparison when someboddy gets more recent info.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

    Thanks for the link MMD.

I was surprised that Cayman S sold more than the Boxster S, which now has the same hp and convertible top at a lower price.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

That was Feb 06 after Cayman came out for a couple of month. I bet the numbers are difference now. Anyone has updated number????

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I wonder how many of those "sold" Cayman were pre-registered dealer / Porsche cars?

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I don't know whether they're selling as well as forecast but I was also thinking something similar the other day---I've seen only 2 ever running around my entire town. In the same period I've seen many, many 911s and plenty of Boxsters and Cayennes. It could just be its the first year but then again, it does seem weird. On my street there are several neighbors that drive 997s much less earlier 911s and so you'd think you see a bunch of Cayman S cars since their "technical and track" reviews were so solid and they are priced below new 997s.

It'll be interesting to see real sales figures for 07 as they come in.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I don't think they are selling well. I've seen brand new, on-the-lot cars advertised at $5-10K discount.

I think most of the people just puzzled at the $10K premium over a comparable boxter. I mean, boxter is basically an identical car and it offers the open air motoring.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

A friend bought one recently; 5k off sticker. Seems dealers would not be knocking 5k off the sticker if they were in strong demand.

That's the right question! Here we have several registered dealer cars at nearly every dealer.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

No exact figures for Cayman, but everythings going gangbusters for Porsche:

Porsche Sales Rise 7% in December
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced that its 2006 sales established a new historical record in North America. PCNA sold 36,095 cars in North America, an increase of 7 percent over 2005 when the company sold 33,859 cars. 2006 was the third consecutive record-breaking sales year of Porsche cars in North America.

The strength of Porsche sales in the U.S. and Canada was led by its sport car models, which saw an overall increase in sales of 30 percent in 2006. The mid-engine sports cars, Boxster and Cayman, totaled 12,163 for 2006, an increase of 46 percent. 911 sales set an all-time record with a 2006 total of 12,702.

For the month of December, PCNA sold 2,850 new cars in the United States (see chart below), on par with the previous year when sales were 2,861. For the year, PCNA also set another consecutive record in the United States, with sales of 34,227 cars compared to the previous high of 31,933 in 2005, an increase of 7 percent.

"2006's sales result is especially gratifying with the Cayenne in its fourth model year and the new one to be revealed next week at the Detroit Auto Show and then launched at dealerships in March," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, PCNA President and CEO. "The strong momentum of our sports car sales sustained our continued growth, with the 911 enjoying its most successful sales year ever."

    Re: Caymen - bust?

The Cayman seems to have cannibalized Boxster sales, judging from the full year numbers shown in the attached synopsis. However I guess PAG's financial department doesn't care whether they sell more 987-variants as cabs or as coupés (just like 997 cab vs. 997 coupé), as long as total sales for the 987-line are up (+46% 2006 vs. 2005).
The attached sheet has been posted by Eric Alain in another thread:

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I don't understand the sales numbers for the Cayenne Turbo for 2006. Here in the USA the Turbo has not been available to order since November 2005. There were several in the pipeline so dealers had some to sell until early 2006. The only Turbo you could get here was the Turbo S model. How come it still shows them being sold through December 2006?

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I don't have a clue BUT those are official numbers from PCNA...

    Re: Caymen - bust?

Here are MONTHLY sales for 2006 in North America (US+CAN) and clearly, some Cayenne TT were delivered .... not in huge quantity though.

I bet they do care and are quite pleased that they are selling more Caymans than Boxsters, given that the profit margin on a Cayman is probably higher than a Boxster ...

I just can't believe that the best selling 997 in NA is the cabriolet, but the best selling 987 is the Cayman, and it costs more than a Boxster ...

How do you make sense of that, other than that we are just responding to clever marketing ...

    Re: Caymen - bust?

997 cabriolet can be explained by Southern California... more cache in the 911 than Boxter and perfect weather for it.

This chart is more like I expected to see for the Cayenne Turbo, as the dealers sell the few Turbos left over. How come we have two charts both supposedly showing the sales numbers for the USA and Canada in 2006, yet their numbers are different. Which one is correct? I suspect the chart with the lower Turbo numbers is the correct one.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I know why they arn't selling all that great in Canada and that's the fact that the BASE Cayman is $70,000 and a no option Cayman S is $83,300!!!

A nicely optioned Cayman S is gettingwithin a thousand or two of a base 997 and it's all too easy to make a $105,000 CaymanS!

It's a great car, it's just $15,000 too much in Canada.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

One shows the sales for each model in each month. The other table shows the sales adding up throughout the year as the months go by (i.e. "cumulative").

Thanks......I missed that it said "cumulative" on the one chart. That makes sense now. It shows a total of 489 Cayenne Turbos for the year.

Is just my eyes or did they spell Cayenne "Cayenre"?

    Re: Caymen - bust?

Regarding the high proportion of Cabriolet sales ..... it's not only the case in North America.

Last year 43% of TOTAL 911 sales were cabs ....

    Re: Caymen - bust?

The Cayman makes up 20% of total Porsche sales North America for 2006
    The Boxster - 13%
    The 997 - 35%

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche

Be interesting to see what happens in 2007.

    Re: Caymen - bust?

I think the re-sale is going to be very poor on them...

    Re: Caymen - bust?

No matter what - the price of the Cayman got me to the dealer. I walked out purchasing a 997. Bait and switch.
