    Best Print Car Magazine

There are a lot of very well informed car guys here (and it sounds like some very fast cars). What's your opinion on the best car magazines in print? I am in America and not familiar with most international magazines, so best US and non-US print car magazines?

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Any car magazine or Posche magazine?

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Best car mag: EVO Magazine published in UK and Italy.
Best Porsche mag: Excellence Magazine published in USA.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

    I like:

    EVO
    Excellence
    Winding Road (free online download)
    GT Purely Porsche
    Total 911
    4Car (online)

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

I prefer the EVO Mag and the german car mag. Powercar. I think it's much better then the german version of Sport Auto.

    Best Regards from Switzerland

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

    For USA Porsche guys, Excellence.

For general car info., I haven't found one I like, I can read German, but I have access usually only to English langauage mags., and none from here or the UK consistently interests me. I tend to use the internet more (and Barnes and Noble lets us read the mags. without buying, of course ), with sporadic mag. purchases if one looks worthy thereof.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

I read Excellence, but am not familiar with EVO. What is the editorial focus? Is it sold in the US? How about at Barnes & Noble, where I might buy it?

    Yeah, B&N carries EVO...

Both Excellence and EVO are sold at B&N-we were in Connecticut for Christmas, and I dropped in to the B&N in Glastonbury (southeast suburb of Hartford) and they had both mags. there. Excellence is US-based, and EVO is from the UK, and generalist.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

    Evo
    Total 911
    GT Porsche
    Autocar

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Thanks to all for the many replies. As a long term Porsche owner (4 various 911s since 1988) and enthusiast and a magazine publisher I sometimes fantasize about publishing a car magazine focused either on Porsches or some other aspect of sportscars, including Porsches. Who knows, perhaps one day.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

after spending lots of money on magazines , I finally subscribed to Evo UK...I believe it's the magazine for the true car enthusiast...

if you like classic cars from the 60s 70s etc, then I think Octane is one of the best along with Classic Car...I happen to own the very first issue of Octane which I bought from London back in 2003...it features the Ferrari 250GTO a car worth around $9million!!!

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Not familiar with the US-based magazines, only buy a copy of R&T every couple of years.

You should definately check out Winding Road, a monthly magazine available in pdf.

For me personally, I would consider some British mags apart from the above mentioned German magazines. By the way, SportAuto just launched their online appearance , incl. a hotlap documentation of the N'ring Northloop & the Hockenheim track. Only in German, I am afraid.

    Greetings!

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

I stopped by the local Borders (national bookstore chain in US with lots of import magazines) and bought a copy of GT Porsche, Total 911, Octane (featuring various 911s on the cover), and 911& Porsche magazines. No EVO to be had. I am curious why the Brits have so many Porsche magazines, yet America, with more Porsche cars and owners, has so few. Any ideas on this?

A couple of the mag names you gave are new to me.

You may find that you won't be able to get them a year from now.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

None of these magazines look like recent additions. They all offer a thick package, decent production values, lots of ads and good photography. I have yet to read them, so I can't comment on the editorial direction or writing. Still, I have to wonder how the English Porsche market can financially support so many magazines when the US Porsche market can't.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

    I wonder the same thing??

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Too bad the Brit Porsche mags are so expensive here in the US. I flipped through them, and while many are quite similar in approach, there is plenty worth reading. Could get expensive to subscribe to them all at over $100 each per year.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

How about opinions on US mags like Road & Track, Motor Trend, European Car, Car & Driver, others?

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

IMO one article about the 911 in evo is worth countless mags

about US mags, i found it hard to read articles between all those ads. However big tests are pretty good

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

In Switzerland it's more difficult to get US Mags than GB Mags.
R&T and Automobile Mag were never delivered in Switzerland.

The only US Mag I read very often, is winding Road ( because it's easy to get it).
I also subscribed EVO because it's ( for me ) the Best Magazine I've ever read.

I read all german Car Mags ( which are not specialised for only 1 Company) I can find at my bookstore.

    Performance style magazine: Sport Auto

    Other: EVO

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

What is Auto Sport about and where is it published?

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

    Sport Auto is that

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

I'd say ROAD & TRACK is the best of the bunch. MT has revamped recently, it used to be the worst. C&D is okay, but not what it was back in the Eighties. EC is smaller mag with a lower budget, but they do okay with what they have.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

IMO depends on the continent where you live. I like most of the magazines that you guys have mentioned before. Thou I see a difference in the way they are printed, written and the quality of the images. Also I have to say that I speak some languages... so apart from just looking at pictures in different magazines I can read them. Also I have a collection of some car magazines.

The English magazines are the most enjoyable and make the best lecture in an afternoon when you have nothing better to do, also with a good knowledge of the technical data and because come from a country where the car culture is very high they are from worthy to trust in the comments they make about cars.

The Germans are the most technical of all of them. Maybe the measurements are the most accurate in all areas. And the technical information is one of the best.

The American magazines IMO are too flashy..... way too much advertisement between articles and very confusing for me. Also because in USA they tend to see the car quite different from us the europeans I don't take for granted all they say about cars.

The Spanish magazines are ok... some of them copying, or trying to copy, the English magazines just that we don't have such a vast car culture.

Italians some of them good, like Quattroruote but in the same time full of a lot of pages and information you can really get rid of them.

French full of praise for French cars and full on information about French intern competition.

Also I think that it is very important to read the magazine from your country because in that way you can have a right opinion about the way the car it will handle, ride and perform on the roads specific to your country.

so in other words, the English car magazines are the best as in the most complete..

and you are right about reading magazines from your country so that you know how cars handle in your road system...but in my case it doesn't matter what kind of car you have because the roads here S-U-C-K!!! ask any Greek you know and they'll tell you that...so I read foreign magazines in order to learn how good cars are on real roads...

Even it is that close to me your country it is still a country to visit so I don't know about the roads there. And about the magazines yes, I do think that the best are the english as beeing entertained to read.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Which is best? It depends on what you need it for. If you need reliable performance statistics, I would go with one of the more reliable German mags e.g. Sport Auto.

But, for me, cars are a passion so I prefer to read articles which excite my passion for cars : i.e. British magazines such as Evo.

Having said that, it's nice to read a variety of magazines to get a broad perspective otherwise we get such a narrow view. As if reading a particular magazine already knowing what kind of opinion it's going to have.

    Re: Best Print Car Magazine

Evo has just published it's 100th edition which features some nice 'best of' & 'worst of' cars tested over the years its been published.
Subs in UK for American mags are so cheap due to dollar exchange rate and the lower cover price - high circulation figures they have. Can be slow getting here and are always on the airport newstands before subscribers get them.
UK Porsche mags can be very similar in content and its probably better to brouse them on the news stands and then pick the one that interests you most, that month.
