    666 phone option report

Although I have had my car about 6 months and have logged about 4,000 miles, I never bothered to really explore the phone until this week. I had erroneously believed that I had to operate the phone controls from the PCM center console, as I did not order the multi-function steering wheel. Much to my surprise, while engaged in RBP (Random Button Pushing) I discovered the phone can be entirely controlled from the PCM computer steering wheel stalk. Al functions, including phone book, missed calls, most frequentally called numbers, etc. can be accessed from the control stalk with phone #'s and names clearly displayed in the annunciuator at the bottom of the tach. Had I taken the time to read the PCM manual, I would have known this on Day One. My dealer had never ordered a car with the 666 phone, so they didn't know much about it. Other than Bluetooth integration, the Porsche 666 phone option works much better than the one in our BMW M3cic or E55. Duplicating the SIM card and keeping one in the car helps.

I wish our network providers would allow duplicated SIM cards. I didn't get the 666 phone option because of this.

What provider let you do this??

    Re: 666 phone option report

It is quite convinient with vehicle GSMs. As long as you keep one on and one off. It is pretty straight forward maybe it is something offered but not announced publicly. We have it for as long as I can remember back GSM history.

    Re: 666 phone option report

I can't find a listing of the frequencies that Porsche uses. Is this a tri or quad band GSM module (850,900,1800,1900)?

    900, 1800, 1900

    Re: 666 phone option report

GA997S: How is the coverage in the USA? I am about to switch from Verizon to Cingular (at&t) and am thinking of buying a European spec Nokia 8800 Sirocco phone. That phone, is only a tri-band 900/1800/1900 which appears the same as the 666 option.

For reference the USA desired frequency specs are: 850/1800/1900 which means that the 666 option will not roam in areas where 1900MHz is not available. (The US uses 850/1900MHz)

I have Cingular and the 666 reception sucks in most areas but it's fine if I'm in Atlanta. My Pearl (4 band) gets good reception everywhere.

Here are two maps that show the coverage for 850 and 1900MHz. Do they correlate to what you have determined for coverage? Your 666 option will only use the 1900MHz coverage area while your Pearl will use both the 1900 area and the 850MHz area:

    1900: http://www.gsmworld.com/cgi-bin/ni_map.pl?cc=us&net=be

    850: http://www.gsmworld.com/cgi-bin/ni_map.pl?cc=us&net=b2

    Re: 666 phone option report

I'm in Los Angeles on Cingular, but the 666 works great as far North as Bellingham WA. I had my SIM dup'd by a street vendor in Shenzhen China for $10.

I considered this option too, but my concern is that they could have dup'd another copy from your card for their use!
