    Just hit the 10,000 mile mark

    I know this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find the posts in my search. I will need to replace my tires in about 2,000 more miles on my C2Scab. I was wondering, what is the most convenient/economical approach to changing all four tires. Is the dealer the wrong place to ask? TIA

    Why not contact Tire Rack? They can ship the tyres to you and you can get them fitted locally by a fitter you know & trust?

    Tire Rack doesn't have the Continental Sports that my car came with but I am going to call them. Thanks

    But should you be fitting Continentals again though??

    These are the recommended tyres for your car:

    Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (N1)
    Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico (N1)
    Continental ContiSportContact 2 (N0)
    Bridgestone Potenza RE050A (N0)

    My sincere advice: get the Michelins. They are wonderful and since you're replacing all 4, you can pick what you want without limitations...

    The reason I wanted the Conti's was their long lifespan. I think the others wear allot sooner, but I am starting to do my research now. Just for the record, the conti's have been superb!!!

    A few weeks ago in the UK, Michelin had an offer where if you bought 4 tyres (tires) you got one FOC. (The cheaper on of course) It saved nearly 25% so it might be worth looking out for these sort of deals.

    (NB the Porsche approved Bridgestones came 7th and aren't the 'Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position' tyres that came first).

    If you're looking for longevity:

    Continentals: 280 treadwear
    Pirellis: 220
    Michelins: 220
    Bridgestones: 140

    For me the most important factors are:

    Wet/dry grip
    Cornering stability
    Road noise
    Treadwear
    Ride Comfort
    Cost

    I think the contis are a good choice and they do last longer than the michelins, and they are cheaper. I think my michelins should last 10K to 12k in the rear and much betterin the front.

    I drive many, many miles and I have the same concerns as listed above. I was sick of replacing my rear Michelins 2X per year and was looking for more treadwear and less noise. I have 42K on my 997S and had more than 90K on my 996 so I have bought MANY tires for Porsches. Trust me. (I once calculated that gas would need to hit $5 a gallon before I would be spending more money on gas than Michelin tires. Do the math!)

    The Pilots are great for the first 40% then they go to crap FAST but they are sticky up to that point. For the winter (and perhaps beyond) I mounted a set of Bridgestone RE 960 AS Pole Position Ultra High performance tires (295/30/19 Rear, 235 fronts). Check out the reviews at TireRack.com I do not want to sell you tires or lead you on. I know they are a compromise in that the ultimate dry traction is not there but the difference is so, so slim that I would have to drive like a friggin' maniac to tell the difference on the street (Arab 'driving video' flashback here). The ride is excellent, traction is great in the rain, snow and ice as well as the dry. They are half the price of the Pilots and the actually come with a 40K treadlife warranty (!!) and a 30 day money back guarantee. I added the road hazard protection for the first time ever since I am hoping that these will actually last more than 12 months.

    Anyway, yes I know many of you are offended that I would put A/S tires on my 997S. Just be glad someone did it and offered some feedback. For me they work great! Even had some fun in the snow a few weeks back. I will put my Pilots on for track work if I can get the time.

    That's twice what I get from the rears when using the Pilots, which is why the fronts usually last exactly twice as long (change them every other time). At 10k the rears would be sparking the cords on my car, but that's just me.

    Can't wait to see how many free rear Bridgestones I can get with that 40K warranty.

    My dealer here in Maryland has always been able to get me prices at or around Tire Rack prices. I do have a good relationship with the parts guy but I don't know how much of the good price comes from that. I have replaced my rears twice and the fronts once and each time, it was at or even below the price for shipped tires from tire rack. Installation is $49 per wheel though, which is high but I don't trust local tire retailers with my TechArt 19's.Plus, I get the free loaner and a good wheel wash.

    I don't track the car and it is my daily driver on mostly highways. My first set of PS2 rears (OEM) lasted 14K miles and my second set lasted 16k miles. My first set of PS2 fronts lasted 30K miles! I just replaced them all with P Zeros so we'll see about treadwear versus the PS2's....

    Tirerack will ship the tires directly to the installer's location. I've done that with winter tires for my other cars.

    That sound right. I just replaced my two rear PS2's at 14,000 miles.

    No, not really. However I think if for instance the two front tyres have a couple of millimetres tread depth between them then this could upset the traction control, in this case it is advisable to change them.

    In the UK the legal wear limit is 1.6mm, however, it is apparently recommended to change when your as low a 2mm if that makes sense.

    There is no chance that not changing the fronts would upset the traction control. It does not function this way. The fronts and the rears are not the same diameter/size in the first place.

    The rear tires on these cars can easily wear 2 times as quickly as the front tires (It's the insides of the rear tires that wear out quickly). There should be no reason to change the front tires if there is even treadwear and plenty of remaining tread. Of course this does not allow you try out different brands but at least you will get twice the use out of the front tires.

    Doh, I wasn't really thinking. Of course I did mean the rears. This is what comes of having AWD for years! My apologies.

    I did notice that the wear was towards the insides of the rear tires. I guess this is normal and nothing needs to be adjusted/aligned?

    I wouldnt have noticed it in the first place if I didnt have the rear tire removed when I ran over a nail (actually, a bolt).
