Nor is it as fast as a LaFerrari or a Veyron. Nor a lot of other supercars/hypercars. That was not my point.

It is a very quick car without the costume. If a Porsche can be a Q car then the R is that car.

    Monster performance?Smiley

It is behind other Porsche models like the Porsche Turbo and Turbo S, the RS and GT3 and of course the 918. To be fifth in performance is not exactly a performance monster.Smiley

My dealer, a large one, is getting three and they are going to 918 owners. NO doubt they will flip the car to defray the cost of the 918 and RS.Smiley

I think we have an issue when 500hp car that weighs 1400kg isn't considered monster performance!

Factory car, I assume that's only for the safety of the test drivers.

These stripes do look like a horrible afterthought on that car, I'd really spec one without.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

    ALDO:

In Germany Porsche doesn't have any special customer treatment for the R model.

Dealer decides who will get the car. A lot of dealer kept the car for himself.

As I said before, I heard something else. Dealer has a saying (recommendation...) but in the end, Porsche decides. Of course Porsche cannot give a customer a car if the dealer doesn't communicate that particular customer to Porsche as being interested in the R. Smiley

Dealers can of course get a car for the dealership but I heard that Porsche isn't particularly in love with this...if you get the point.

I kind of lost interest in the R, had a lot of time to think about it during my vacation. My dealer contacted me before the vacation to spec the car and do a lease calculation but over two weeks have passed and he hasn't contacted me again. Maybe he expects me to be a bit more proactive on such a car but to be honest, I doubt I will go through with it. Biggest concern is the manual transmission because I have a gut feeling that I won't like it too much. Second concern is the financial part, this car would require a certain sacrifice on my part and I'm not sure I want to do that for this particular car. It would be perfect with PDK and even more perfect with rear seats but... Smiley

Maybe time to forget about it, as much as I probably will regret it when I'll see the value increase in a year or two. Smiley

    PROS:

The R being limited edition means that it'll hold (when not increasing) its value better than your GTS, which is going to lose around half its price in the next ~three years.

The R will provide a more exciting driving experience than the GTS because of its lightness and power output. I assume that an advanced driver like you would appreciate this.

The R is the best looking 991. Clean but sexy. Also discreet so you can use on a daily basis.

    CONS:

Lack of rear seats. Coupe. Manual. RWD.

Are this items an issue in a car like this? Really?

For an enthusiast the only negative point that I'd understand it's the financial one. Other than that, IMHO it ticks all the right boxes.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

I think the appeal of this car w/ a manual and w/o back seats is substantially more limited than if the car were available as a standard production model where buyer has a choice.  When people actually have to vote with their currency the internet enthusiasm abates.  Porsche was wise to limit to 991 units thereby maintaining enthusiasm a/o angst conversation while never having to answer the question regarding how may such cars can actually be sold.

Silver with Green and black wheels is definitely the best looking combo for the R, IMO.

It looks sick! Anyway, without red/green stripes for me. OTOH, lateral decals fit perfectly.

To be ready to make a sacrifice (financially), the car would need to be perfect. With manual, it isn't (for me). I could forget about the rear seats since the kids barely ride with me in the car anymore (unless they sit in the front next to me) but the lack of PDK is really an issue. I like the manual on my Shelby GT500 but I cannot say I'm in love with it. I want to have a choice and manual doesn't provide this choice.

Stupid example: Just last Sunday, I hurt my right arm in a training accident (was tired after a US trip and wasn't warmed up sufficiently). I can barely raise my arm and it will probably take weeks until it gets better. Tried to drive the Shelby and it was almost impossible because every move of the right arm was painful, especially rotational moves. With PDK, no problems at all. I know, a stupid example but... Smiley

I get your point and you are not convinced to pull the trigger, so I suppose it will be better you pass on this one and save the opportunity to purchase another special edition from Porsche (let's say GT2RS?).

    Good call I guess.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Well, the GT2 RS certainly tickles my senses but to be blunt, I have something more exotic (but probably less fast) on my mind. My wife doesn't seem to mind anymore what our neighbors think and my next weekend fun car could be something more exotic. The Huracan but also a McLaren could be a possibility but in the end, the car needs to be fun to drive. We'll see... blush Maybe even the next 991.2 GT3.

I haven't written off the 911 R completely but I really think I could regret the decision from a fun point of view, certainly not from a value increase point of view.

If I ever get a Huracan, it would have to be the Spyder. I mean, I don't see them as pure sports cars the way GT Porsches are so may as well go topless!

Why, don't I have enough of it already? Smiley

I don't care about anything other than harming the kids in any way (friends, neighbors) or spending too much money. Everything else is not important when it comes to cars and since this would be a weekend toy, it wouldn't matter to my business (no, I would never park a Huracan in front of my business, my customers would mind!).

The Huracan was just an example. Right now, I do not have any plans of getting a new car but the 911 R came and my enthusiasm for this car is/was quite high. With PDK, I wouldn't have even bothered to think twice about it but with manual, it is a difficult decision. Like I said, I do not plan to get such a car as an investment, so it doesn't matter how valuable (or not) it will be after a couple of years.
