    Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

    Guys,

I have a chance to buy a 2007 black/black Audi S8. This particular car is not spoken for and it is COMPLETELY loaded. The car is on the boat as we speak.

    Every option was checked:
    ski sack,
    carbon fiber belt line trim,
    rear seat electric lumbar,
    Bang & olufsen sound,
    Adaptive cruise control,
    Dual rearseat climate control,
    full leather upgrade,
    premium package,
    serius satellite radio

    MSRP should be $113,395.

If you now anything about the S8 you know it has the Lambo V10, 6 speed tip and Quattro with a 60% rear bias, etc.

    Information here:
    S8 inofrmation link.

OK, I've had my 2006 Carrera S with X51 for 15 months. She has 10,000 miles on the odometer. The car has been great.

What do I like about the S8? Almost has the Porsche's performance. Has a spare tire. Holds four adults in supreme comfort. Has the Lambo V-10. Quattro. Sirius sat radio. Has the Lambo V-10.

With a $1,000 deposit the S8 is mine.

We only have a one car garage. I can only own one of these two cars.

    Money is not an issue.

    What should I do?

    More on the S8

    More on the S8.

Buy a bigger garage and have both cars.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

That's a tough one. Hard to resist that Audi interior and that V10 engine. I've had four new cars since 2003 so I understand the restlessness of wanting the latest and greatest...once that fire is lit....

I think I'd get bored with the S8 after a few months of exploiting the V10 in straight line accel. A friend of mine recently dumped what I thought was an awesome 438-horsepower BMW 760i V12 sedan because at the end of the day it still behaved like an enormous sedan albeit with an incredible powerplant. You will lose a huge part of the 997's visceral handling thrills considering the Audi's 4400 lbs. curb weight and stretch wheelbase. (Have you tried the Cayenne Turbo S? If you want a bit more luxury than 997 and you're not averse to foregoing a bit of 997's handling attributes, the CTTS is frooking unbelievable, and $30K discounts available.)

Bottom line- I'm with poster JMSHrink above, get both.... pay the neighbor to park in the street, rent the neighbor's garage... or MOVE!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

You need to decide on what you want - a sportscar ( ) or a sporty sedan ( ). The S8 does NOT have the performance of the C2SX51. Some raw numbers that speak little of the actual driving experience may suggest that, but there is simply no way. "Performance" is much more than those quantitative assessments.

    So which do you want?

My 911 is meant to be my sportscar - and it is as different from any other car I have or have driven. It is hunkered down low, rear wheel drive, rear weight bias, fat tires, huge amounts of grip, incredibly nimble steering with loads of tactile information, superlative brakes, and it looks classic and sexy at the same time. There is no way I would EVER replace it with a sporty sedan, no matter what that sedan's "numbers" are. No M3. No RS4. No S8. No AMG whatever.

The only thing I might replace my 911 with is a GT3 or a Carrera GT!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

One car garage with a family....I say go for it. If you get tired of it we'll still be here for you.

Very nice of you to say, Holli.

But sure, the kids aren't getting any smaller and I'm not a race car driver. That said, I do love driving the 911.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

I traded my b7 rs4 for an C2S, Audi did everything well, but c2s is great fun to drive.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

I think you will regret giving up the Porsche, the handling (driving experience) is addictive, and you will yearn for it (been there a couple of times) . I bought an 07 RS4 and while it was a great car, no complaints; I preferred to drive the 997 X51 and I sold the RS4.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

I think it will be a mistake. The driving experience in any 997 variant is almost w/o peer. Audi makes well built, eronomically correct and stylish cars. They are quite numb in comparison. I've driven practically everything in the Audi lineup trying to like them. . the SUV, the RS4, S4 avant and sedan, both versions of the A3, A6, A8.

There is no reason to believe the 8 will be any different despite its go fast bits. It will also depreciate with unbelievable velocity.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

Do you prefer driving a sports car or a big leather sofa?

No disrespect to Audi intended, but Porsche knows better how to hit the spot perfectly - keep the 997!!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

Don't do it! I bought my first Porsche in 1982 and I traded it in on a BMW 750 10 years later. I regretted it for a long time ... until I bought my next Porsche. If you truly enjoy the visceral handling of the Porsche you will be very disappointed!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

You really want to stay with the 997 don't you????
You are on a porsche site, our views are biased. Pondering on this site is your subconscience asking to stay with the 997.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

You said it ''money not an issue.'' I suggest keep the 997 get a car cover for one or the other and park it outside. I have 5 cars and a two car garage. My poor C2S is outside but covered or build a more garage space. I think you will regret it. Just look at how many 2006 M5's are available now. Audi S8 Still a sport sedan and not what I consider a true sports car.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

A case can be made for both cars: the 997 will always feel better, and you're going to need some room for your kids.

If money is indeed not an issue, just get both. The S8 can sleep outside.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

As great as the S8 with the V10 will be, I have to say that you will probably actuely miss the 911 in about 12 months. I had a BMW M5 before my 997S, and, as much as I liked driving the M5, I LOVE driving the 997S...that is until I get the 997TT!

If this is your ultimate choice (not a bad one really), do us all a favor, and park the S8 outside.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

Lambo v10? its not really the lambo v10..yes I know it shares the base architecture but its not the screamer that it is in the lambo and it is pretty evident that the audi has a whole lot more weight to pull! I have a friend that has one and whilst its damn fast and damn comfortable it has more in common with a boat than the lithe and athletic 911...!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

My apologies, keep the audi outside.

No apologies need my friends. I think this is the solution. Just too bad the one coming in is black. But unlike the Porsche I think I could take an S8 to the carwash.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

I drove sl500 for 2 years now, I think it well compares to s8. it even beat the s8 in ability to manuever, etc.. It is still a couch with 4 wheels. I hope that my long awaited Targa4s will feel like everyone here says it will feel. Otherwise I'll trade it in the Chrysler dealership for a Dodge Caravan and a 999r ducati

Since I sold my ducati s2r monster (I got married and expecting a kid, so I had to sell it) nothing is able to move my adrenaline level. I am really hoping that the porsche will move it a little bit

Bottom line - no matter how fast the s8 will be I do not think that it will feel sporty at all, if that's what you want - get it.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

I do NOT understand the grillework. There is no functionality there. It is waaaaay too big; such massive air intake is not required for modern engines. What is that black plastic bar doing there? Are they trying to make the car look unique? They certainly made it look odd. Sorry, can't get excited about the *looks* of this car. Keep the CarreraS and wait until Audi (and BMW) overcome the hopefully temporary collective brain damage in the design department.

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

The obvious answer is for you to get a Lambo with a Lambo engine. Money is no object! Hire a driver for the family.

B Sparrow - love your city! Drive up there every year for the GP from KC. Best city in the world for an F1 GP!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

    997s = sport car
    S8 = BIG BOAT
Why do you change your 997s for 997GT3 or 997TT?

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

Come on. You must know inside of you the answer to that without having to ask us!

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

2 completely diferent cars, only you can answer this question. I think you will find a bit of bias on a 997 forum

The Audi is a fantastic mile muncher but not quite as involving as a Porsche

    Re: Should I trade my 2006 Carrera S in for a 2007 Audi S8?

    Of course, keep the Pcar!

I can't believe that you, of all people, are asking this question.
