    Anticipation - just traded a 1996 993 cab for a...

    New 997 S Cab. I am going to the dealer today to pick out an exterior color (arctic silver or atlas grey), but otherwise the 2 cars are identical. I have had the 993 for 5 years and it served me well. I sold it to a fellow watch collector and I will still get to see it, but I decided to step up to to the 997 S as it is just awesome. I feel VERY fortunate that I am able to make this swap. I look forward to participating and lurking to learn about the car, but I thought I should introduce myself. BTW, if anyone wants to make a color recommendation, I am all ears. The interior is black leather w/carbon on both. The cars sticker prices are identical - I didn't think I would see that at a small dealer near Boston, MA.

    Hi Kenny and welcome to Rennteam!

    Strangely, I have exactly those colors on my Porsches. The 997 Carrera S coupe is Atlas grey and the 987 Boxster S is Arctic silver. I would recommend, and this is of course my own personal opinion, to go for Arctic silver. Atlas grey is fantastic, but I think Arctic silver looks much better on a cab. The contrast between silver body and black softtop/interior makes the cab really beautiful.

    Thanks for the opinion - I agree with you. I have 2 points of confusion/contention (internally) - 1. My business is called Atlas Distributing so I would like to get the Atlas Grey & 2. there are so many arctic silvers around me that even though it may look better (especially the contrast w/black roof), it won't stand out as much to me. I should add that I have had 3 x 993's and they have all been black exteriors (all w/ light interiors) and I have loved them all when they were clean. That was a tough task to accomplish. I do think the silver would be easier to keep clean.

    The good news is there is no wrong answer!

    Thanks so much for your input - especially as I am a complete novice to this forum. I see you're in Switzerland - I am a watch collector and I have never been to your phenomenal country, but I am supporting your economy.

    kenny - welcome to the forum!

    I'm a big fan of Atlas Grey but it does look quite dark in most circumstances.

    If you want contrast then artic silver would be nice albeit it's relatively common. (I guess it is popular for a reason!)

    Having said that, Atlas Grey cab with top down look stunning!

    Altas grey is a very compelling color in all sorts of ambient lighting; kinda mysterious how it reacts to light.

    AS is washed out during the day, but pays back enormously in the AM or near sunset; can stun the owner and stimulate excessive endorphin release (addiction potential has not been studied).

    AS is the"official" German racing color (was white).

    AS (approx. 30% (?) reflectant monochrome shows off the aesthetics of the car better (shapes, volumes, lines) than any other color Porsche offers (this is a fact you learn in art/design school).

    Darker colors (A Grey) are better for "hiding" all the functional distractions especially in the front of the car. The apertures in the bumper, the shadowlines of the wheel wells, the "kerf" lines between body panels.

    AS makes the *clean* spinning wheels less evident (less flashy as you drive by people you do NOT want to impress ) since the color matches.

    AS might look cleaner longer than AG. FWIW, you know what they say about black (and darker colors?), "It's not a color it's a job."

    I have a '06 997 C2s artic silver/black with tinted windows. great combo, artic looks great when the sunlight hits it. But, you cannot go wrong with either color

    Congrats kenny. I'd go with Arctic for a cabrio.

    ideally you could stay local, but this could be useful for $$ leverage in your dealings with the Boston dealer.

    Thanks to all for advice! This place is great. I decided on Arctic Silver. I am getting the car next Wed. I am psyched. I also wanted to thank each of you for your insight - everybody responded with very valid and valuable information. I am a watch forum guy by previous experience and those forums do not allow one to mention prices/deals/dealers, but it seems okay for this one (moderators please edit/delete if I am out of bounds) so I will tell you that my 997 S listed at 105215 and I netted a 14% discount w/ all aspects considered.

    Thanks again - I especially want the windows tinted now.

    I think it was much less my negotiating skills as it was the end of the year timing and the dealer's fiscal year end (also a relatively bad economy).

    I must agree with Bluelines... silver looks better with the black top... plus, the atlas grey is difficult to maintain and keep clean...

    Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. Also, it is always better to agree with the bluelines than the bluehairs! That is an American expression for old folks (in case you didn't know the reference).

    I am unsure if the car your buying is an '06 or '07. Anyway, there are numerous '06, new 997S cabs discounted throguout the country anywhere from $12-$14k off of MSRP. If you got this discount on an '07 you obviously did a lot better. Congrats!

    Devo - it is a 2006. It is the reason I was able to do the deal. I did get a bit over 14 k off of my 105215.00 list on the end of the year bahgin ( as we say in Boston). Thanks.
