    Help! Started smelling burning oil...

A couple of days ago I noticed whilst starting the car that the oil level was a little low, by this I mean by 1 mark on the gauge. I promptly thought I'd better top her up.

Anyway, when I tried to remove the oil cap it was particularly stiff, i.e. would not unscrew very easily. When I did manage to get the cap off I noticed a frothy light brown substance, like you would get when water mixes with oil. This was only apparent to the upper most part of the filler neck. I cleaned the residue away with a rag and topped the oil level up. I only put 300ml in as opposed to the "approx. measure of 400ml" as per the owners manual.

I took the car for a spin yesterday and when I got out I could smell a strong odour of oil burning.

Does this need the dealers attention or do you think it's just excess oil burning and won't be a problem?

    Cheers all.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

Excess oil in the engine shouldn't "burn" or give an odor. You could give it a couple more runs to see if there may have been external spilled oil burning off the engine...or, if you didn't spill any on the engine then at least call the service tech and follow his advice.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

Smell will most likely just be from a bit of oil spillage and nothing to worry about but just make sure you screwed the cap on properly.
The "mayonnaise" is normal - will burn off after a good long run. It's caused by stop-start running or lots of shortish journeys.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

The slight accumulation of gunge under the filler cap is quite normal - it is a formn of oil/water mixture, but occurs due to the long length of the filler pipe and the hot oil fumes mixing with condensation within the pipe.

Has the oil level on the gauge risen by the amount you expected from the top up ? - if not you may have a split filler pipe.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

    Thanks all appreciate your time.

I've just cleaned the car and thought I'd check the oil. Now this is from cold but for some reason the oil gauge is saying once again that I need more oil, i.e. the gauge is reporting the level one down from full.

When I topped the oil up last time it was in the dark but I felt I could see what I was doing. However, I may have spilt some and it's just resting on the engine you never know. I'll speak with the dealer tomorrow but in the meantime I'll take it for a longish run and I'll report back.

    Thanks again guyz.

ResB, for future reference, I know the Mobil 1 bottle has a clear strip going up the side so you know how much oil is left in the bottle AFTER you finish filling up, but I find it much more helpful to pour a specific quantity of oil into a mini measuring jug (max is 250ml calibrated in 50mls: available in the home section of any Tesco superstore). It has a small spout so there's less chance of spilling any oil while you put it in the engine. Since it's a measuring jug, you know what quantity you are about to pour in BEFORE you actually put it in. Helps with keeping an accurate record of engine oil used. Just my suggestion.

Yank up on cap; release filler tube

I vote it was spilled; got my fingers crossed.

BTW, AFAIK, it is not shown in the owner's manual but does everybody know that the filler cap/tube is held in place with a retaining clip?

IOW, the cap is attached to a tube is attached to a flexible section of hose. Grab the cap tightly and PULL UP. The whole thing (cap, tube, flexible hose) will pop out and up, making getting cap off and filling easier.

Last I checked this significant detail is not even mentioned in the manual.

Good point. I do use a measuring jug as you suggest but also use a separate funnel. I like your idea better though. B&Q / Tesco tomorrow it is for me then.

I never knew that. What a great tip. We should make a "tips" section for the site. These are invaluable if you ask me.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

MMD, it's mentioned on page 202 of the 2006 US Carrera Owners Manual.

Thank you Sir. Great, makes me glad to know they're updating stuff; I'm looking at a downloaded copy of model year 2005. Shudda checked my 06 manual in the car.

Anyway it suuure makes filling easier and I'm glad the the "news" is out there.

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

MMD, it's also on page 182 of the 2005 US version of the Carrera Owners Manual: "Pull oil filler tube upwards out of its holder."

There's a great section on "Maintenance, Car Care" in the Manual. It's all there! Hope that helps...

Re: Help! Started smelling burning oil...

BTW Coochas uploaded the 2006 US owners manual, 2006 US PCM manual and 2006 US quick reference guide to his own website. He provided a link to it here on Rennteam. Do a search - it's handy having them in electronic form.
