Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

    Hey guys,

I have a question that crosses my mind right now. Since some of you already have enough experience with this issue, I'd be curious to hear about the tire brand and dimension you use on your 997 model. I am precisely interested in the difference between 18" and 19" rims, in all conditions.

    Thanks in advance!

I'd stick with the 18" for winter. Wouldn't want to hit a pothole with the 19".

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

Went with the 19" which was something i did with my previous e60 M5. Actually did hot pothole on that car with the forged M6 style alloy and destroyed a wheel...
Back to the 997S, got the Pirelli Winters N0 Porsche Recommended in 235front/295rear and have had many problems with them, not being balanceable on a Hunter so had 2/4 replaced and the vibration is less in front but now more in rear, gets better on some cold days by unclear mechanism. In really cold weather they have awesome traction and handling but if i were to do it again, i would stay away from the Pirelli's because of poor quality control in my experience since at least 3/6 tires (50%) were out of round and now i am stuck with them since Tire Rack will not replace more than 2/4 and Pirelli will not take them back. If you are going to keep the 19's then go with the Conti Winter Sports which are also recommended by porsche and have a better QC though probably not as good traction/roadholding as the Pirellis. And you may want to just go with the 18's after all not just for cost but maybe to avoid what i went through.

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

Just got the 18" Contis installed a couple weeks ago and they seem fine. No snow and ice driving so far so can't give that perspective. While the ride is a little more floaty than the standard 19"s, I feel a lot more confident with them on in sub 40-degree weather.

I went with the 18"s because I understand that the lower profile and reduced contact patch give me better grip in slippery conditions. Don't plan to drive in snow, but stuff happens and its good to know I have the option.

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

I wrote in another thread how my 19 inch Continentals TS810S worked last weekend. Condition was bad enough there was a Police road block only allowing AWD and cars with winter tires to proceed up the mountain.

The TS810S tires worked really well on snow, slushy ice and heavy rain. Temperature around 32F/0C.

I have 235 and 295, ride I find smoother than the Bridgestone RE050A.

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

I got the 18'. Cheaper and theoretically a little bit better in the snow as the tyre is a little bit higher..

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

Rather than snow tires I am using Bridgestone all-season tires (RE960AS Pole Position - Ultra High Performance All-Season). For the type of snow I could possibly use the car for (more than 5 inches and you are stuck regardless of the tire) they are great! The size is 19" 235/40 front and 295/30 rears. They come direct from the tirerack with a 30 day money back guarantee if for any reason you do not like them (and a 40K treadlife warranty! )
I have tried them in ice and snow and they perform almost as well as a snow tire - much better than a M Pilot. They are great in the rain as well. For dry weather driving they are very quiet and smooth. Much 'softer' than the Michelins or the Contis I've had in the past, nice for 19" wheels as they are a little more compliant. They also give away very little dry traction off the line or in corners.

Given that the snow can hit here anytime over a 5 month window but it is dry most of the time these tires are perfect. I would hate to drive with snow tires for months on end or constantly take them on and off. These all-season tires will get me through the winter months with traction and speed.

I do a lot of driving esp. long stretches on the hwy and I really like the ride and comfort. I still keep a set of dedicated dry tires on 19" wheels but I am leaning on using them on the track/summer only since these Bridgestones are such a good street compromise.

Can't wait to see how many sets of rear tires I get out of the 40K treadwear warranty! My Pilots usually last about 8K miles.

Re: Winter tires - recommended makes & dimensions

a mileage warranty? are some companies crazy??? if somebody knows of this in Europe please let me know!!!
