    '08 Cayman S

I read the facelifted '08 997 will have more HP. Does this mean we can expect the Cayman line to also get a HP boost? Still waiting for the Cayman S to break the 300HP barrier....

    David

    Re: '08 Cayman S

I'm looking forward to the 400HP barrier. 300 is so close to the current 295 that it isn't significant.

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. That's a patently unrealistic hope even for a Cayman RS.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

I think it will be arround 315bhp-325bhp (as maximum)...just as mk2 996 engines

It's significant if you're coming from a base Boxster with 217HP.

But then so is going from 217-295HP. If that is the only difference I wouldn't wait for a MY08 unless it was a only an extra month or so on delivery.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

    Dont hold your breath

they are talking 5 - 25 HP across the entire 911 lines ... base to TT

So what would they give the CS? Its already faster around the Ring than the base 997

    Re: '08 Cayman S

Be that as it may, I am not fooled by the 300 barrier milestone. It is, in reality, only 5HP away, or, only a 2% increase. The real milestone, which it seems Porsche AG is unwilling or incapable of achieving, is the 400HP barrier.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

Endless speculation on CS power increases will just give your stress.

If the 997 cycle for a power bump is 3 years (2005-2008), you can expect a 987 power bump in 2009 ... and only to the level far below whatever the base 997 car may be.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

I just read the latest January 2007 issue of Car magazine, where the CEO of Porshe, Wendelin Wiedeking, says that the priorities for Porsche are the customer, the workers, and then the shareholders, in that order. His words strikes me as incongruous with his actions. Come on, Wiedeking, gives us the car we want to buy instead of piecemealing it out to milk profits. It's a darn shame when we fork over $60,000 for a car only to be smoked by a car half the price. Where's your Porsche pride? Do it to uphold the Porsche legacy. Don't underestimate the competition like Detroit did. Unleash the full potential of the Cayman now, before it's too late.

Yes well it's important to me that my next Porsche break the "psychologically important" 300HP mark. When people ask me how much HP my car has I want to be able to say at least 300, instead 200 and something... 300 just sounds better than 200 and something. Just like it's "psychologically important" for some people to buy the S instead of the base, even though the HP difference is less than 2%.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

    Desnork.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

Not sure I understand this part: "Just like it's "psychologically important" for some people to buy the S instead of the base, even though the HP difference is less than 2%". The difference beteen the base and S is 50hp

    Re: '08 Cayman S

If the Carrera's in 2008 do come with Direct injection, then both mid-engined cars should also get it. To get direct injection, porsche is re-designing the heads... and the 3.4L motor uses the 3.6L heads. So I don't think it'll be a surprise to see a 10-15 percent increase in power for '08 and better fuel mileage. The Cayenne will also be direct inj. for '08... so it makes sense.

That being said... Porsche has never played in the Hp games... power to weight ratio is where it's at... and making the car lighter helps cornering/stopping, and acceleration...

    Re: '08 Cayman S

Not concerned about horsepower alone. It's the "slow Porsche" part that I'm concerned about. Other manufacturers like BMW already have direct injection and their cars are fast. If Porsche can cut weight with an aluminum alloy frame, ceramic brakes, and carbon-fiber roof, that's just fine. Horsepower may or may not have to increase. But the end result has to be as fast as my buddy's car.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

if your so concerned with the cayman getting beaten by your mates m3 or whatever why not fit a supercharger? Ive been a base spec 986 boxter with around 320 hp (Super-charged) and it absolutely flew..

    Re: '08 Cayman S

What kind of supercharger do you have? Was thinking of retrofitting a centrifugal ASA supercharger. Do you notice any supercharger whine? How often do you have to do maintenance on the supercharger?

    ...apart?

    Re: '08 Cayman S

dreamcar has a point. It would be wonderful if Porsche AG would just build the car we want in the first place. Good companies listen to their customers.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

flew apart..lol it wasn't my car but it was a evolution motorsports supercharger..as for hearing it..if you listen carefully yes but if you had no idea you wouldn't know any better..(it doesnt help that the car had custom cats on it though). I have no idea about maintenance though..it does spin to about 10k revs though! As for porsche not building the cars we want in the first place.. how come they are the most profitable car company in the world and placed arguably to become the worlds most powerful after toyota.. re: controling share in VW group..

    Re: '08 Cayman S

I don't know. Maybe they rip off their loyal customers on option pricing just a little?

Maybe they're forgetting they were on the brink of bankruptcy only a few years ago and now that they're making money they think they don't have to listen to their customers or heed any competition just because they're Porsche?

    Re: '08 Cayman S

Yes they certainly were on the brink..thanks to the boxter and eventually the cayenne here we are! as for option pricing, whilst they are horrendously expensive (Pounds700 for painted wheels!!!??!?!) they are pretty much in line with other prestige sports car manufacturers, ferrari, lambourgini, mercedes..

So, we're agreed on how Porsche is so profitable --- they charge a huge mark-up.

The fact that they make fabulous cars also has something to do with it, don't you think?

Yes, fabulous, and fast too. Unfortunately, unless they continue to be as fast or faster than other cars on the road, they will quickly become not so fabulous.

Sigh. ... Then why is it that when the campares say the z4M coupe and CS, although the OEM CS may be slower in acceleration, they auto journalists always pick the CS as the better all-around sports car.

being the fastest doesn not equate to being the best.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

    1. It takes a while for the aura to wear off. Sometimes, it can be as slow, and as deadly, as water on rock sometimes. All the little hits to Porsche's reputation from getting smoked by cars half the price add up.

    2. Would you buy yesterday's performance for tomorrow's prices? Car technology is improving rapidly and what we only find in horribly expensive supercars of the past can be had for pennies on the dollar today. I'm just waiting for Lexus to come out with a better Porsche for $30,000 less. Then we'll see how invincible the Porsche badge really is.

I'm waiting for NASA to call and offer me a free ride on the Space Shuttle.

    Re: '08 Cayman S

    Tell that to Mercedes.
