    Leaking Oil

    Hey guys,
My dad just bought a 2007 Targa 4S and he has been driving it whenever he can, I would say he has about 100 miles on it right now (He won't drive it in the rain). He pulled it out today and there was some oil on the garage floor...Should we be worried? Is this normal at such a low mileage? I looked under the car and couldn't really see any leak spots or anything, so is this the engine just settling in? Thanks guys! Any help would be great!

    Merry Christmas!

    Re: Leaking Oil

Take it to dealer, could be minor, or major, only 100 miles, that makes your stomach turn! Most likely minor!!

    Re: Leaking Oil

Right now put a large clean sheet of paper under car, check for oil in the AM.

Tomorrow if no oil take for short drive and re-do the paper-under-the-car thing.

If no oil at overnight, but oil after a drive *might* be the rear main seal (RMS, do a search on "RMS"). The seal fills while driving, then leaks a small amount as it drains itself in park, IOW, not a constant leak.

Constant leak of large amount of oil (greater than an RMS-suspected quarter to half-dollar size) can mean something simple (good) like a hose is loose and simply needs tightening (though I'm not sure exactly which hose or where) or something like a gap or a crack in the case (bad).

Make sure you get full explanation and actually see what they did if you bring to get it fixed... .

    Re: Leaking Oil

It could be an RMS weep, but some owners have had drips of the cosmoline engine underseal in their first few days of ownership.

    Re: Leaking Oil

    MMD,

We have the paper towel under the car now. I will follow your instructions.

I was thinking it would be the cosmoline engine seal...could this be easily confused with oil if on the floor?

    Thanks guys!
    Have a safe holiday!

If the stuff is cosmoline it should re-harden or at least get sticky or waxy; something different than plain old oil.

Dreaded, but "easily" fixable Rear Main (oil) Seal (RMS) leaks from area circled in red in accompanying photo. See tip of white arrow? THAT nub is often the exact point where you'll see a drop of oil hanging indicating 99% chance of a RMS leak

CAREFULLY position your paper and monitor to see if you're in this area. IF NOT exactly in the red circled area, then could be something as easy as a loose oil line/hose (On this new engine I'm not sure where they are, if any, sorry... .)

Relax, it seems everybody has a few problems at delivery. My PCM didn't work! Sorry about the leak in a new car though...

He does know that rain will not hurt the car right?

Yes, but he puts many hours into cleaning the car and making sure it is in the most clean state to let it be rained on, which is understandable.

I do beleive it is the cosmoline. The spot on the floor was near the rear of the car, but I am going to do what you guys say and put the paper towel right below the nub. I'll let you guys know! Thanks!

My car is 26 moonths old now and never ever has seen rain. Same with a friend's car who bought it at the same time. Fortunately, in California, it only a couple days every year we can not drive it.

    Re: Leaking Oil

Ah, Your lucky. Here in Cincinnati we have had some odd weather. It is warm and rainy, no snow. It thunderstormed on Christmas yesterday, it was very weird, and I didn't even need a jacket to go outside, just a long sleeve shirt!

    Two things:

    1) This is a 996 engine right?

    2) Most people have problems on delivery... is this true? Is Porsche quality really so low that most of us have had some kind of problem?

    Re: Leaking Oil

    Its the 3.8.

I dont think a lot of people have problems on delivery. We dont have a problem I believe but just a concern. When we saw the spot on the floor it worried us, but we are almost 100% sure it is the cosmoline engine seal. We have had no more spots and I put the towel right where an RMS leak would occur or anything else. My dad and I both love this car and nothing is wrong with it.

Porshce just did get ranked very highly on the JD Power quality, so I dont know if a lot of problems occur. The only other problem my dad and I have ran into is that a Porsche is so different than any other car that it takes a while to get used to!

Wow your car has not been driven in the rain and you have had it for over 2 years.

Man I drive mine and it gets dirty no matter if it is rain or shine. I can wash it and as soon as I drive it I can see dirt. I guess not as much dirt as if I drive it in the rain though.

    Re: Leaking Oil

Cars still need washing even if it doesn't rain due to dirt, dust, road grime, pollution and other contaminants etc etc.

No escape from having to get the car washed.

True. Try telling my Jeep that. I got the custom two tone black and weeks of dirt and grime fade paint job.

Didnt you take your car to Porsche to have them check it???
For the price we pay for these cars and if I saw anything, I mean anything on my garage floor within the first 100 miles, I would be marching down there for a check up, Did you know its free to have it checked and confirmed....ok that was a little joke, but I wouldnt visually assume nothing...I know all about cosmolene and that lovely smell, but I never saw anything leak off the bottom of my car...Stranger things I am sure have happened though

    Re: Leaking Oil

Since your car is still brand new, it'd be some kind of lubricant that dripped of the car within the first couple of miles. Anyways you'd go to the dealership and have them check it or simply keep an eye on it!

In that case it doesn't look like a difficult task to accomplish!

    Re: Leaking Oil

Are you sure it isn't water from the airco mixed with some covering protection product from the engine?
