    Radar Question

Never had a radar detector before, is it worth getting with today's instant on radar and lasers? I'm not interested in the detectors that require installs in the front to help scramble the laser. Something that is more plug-in-play type. From previous posts I gathered the Valintine 1 was the best overall-----is this correct?

    Thanks for the help,

    Mike

    Re: Radar Question

This question will always start a controversy. My experience tells me the Valentine is the most sensitive of the plug and play detectors compared to the Escort, Bel, etc. That can be a good thing on the open road. In the city it can be annoying with false positive returns.

My strategy is to "behave" myself around town and I don't even carry it in the car. On the back roads and interstates I try and find a "rabbit" (some one who will drive faster than you, which isn't hard to do with a little provoking) to go ahead and "light up" the radars up ahead or keep a laser equipped cop busy. This way I can ID the threats quite easily and take appropriate action.

In my new car I will utilize the belt and suspenders approach with a built in Escort SRX laser diffuser and the Valentine hard wired next to the rear view mirror. I'll still use the "rabbit" strategy though.

    Re: Radar Question

V1 is the first detector I purchase. I bought it because it was so highly recommended by everyone on this site. Once you get used to using it, it's the bomb!!! In the city I rarely see the need for it, but on my last trip to the Florida Keys it was 100% accurate I had mine installed at the dealer and I love it!

    Re: Radar Question

I see rhino and myself have the same taste . Get the V1, you won't regret it. Also, a good laser jammer will definitely come in handy. A Lidatek LE-30 or one of the Antilaser incarnations is the right ticket.

Though I do not personally use one, I am around a lot of knowledgeable car people (even though some of them own Porsche's ) and just about everyone one of them uses a Valentine. If I ever decided to get one, I would choose it. A no brainer.

    Re: Radar Question

Another vote for the V1 here.

Two comments, first, the "falses" people comment on are not falses, they're usually legitimate X or K band transmitters that don't happen to be police. Other things besides police are on those bands, thanks to the FCC.

If there's a lot of laser where you're at, you may need some active countermeasures. Carlos from Spain is the board expert on this, hopefully he may comment.

A radar detector is mandatory if you drive anytime/anywhere over the speed limit even if only 10-15 miles/hr. Coppers can beep you anytime, anywhere. Two tickets pay 4-the thing. The police have a stealth-tool to check for speeders, and I think it great that a driver can match up with the technology. I think it extremely embarrassing to get stopped for speeding from a policeman hiding somewhere out of sight ( with a radar gun or laser gun) having the wife/business rep or what-have-you in the car and you mistakenly were speeding leaving a restaurant or what-ever having your mind on something else. It is your choice....if you want to chance the embarrasment fine, that is what this country is all about free choice. I have used radar detectors for >20 years and feel it helps me control my speed especially knowing now how coppers like to hide out of sight and sap drivers holding them up, searching their cars, delaying them for as long as they want. If you want to avoid such crap, getting a V1 is a no-brainer. It belongs in the tool box of serious drivers.

    Re: Hey Mike, you there

www.radarbusters.com is a site that offers a tremendous amount of information around radar detectors. Looks like this site recommends the Escort SR7 with the Jamming module for the descrete custom installed detectors. It recommends the Bell RX65 for the type that mounts to your windshield through suction cups.

Also, it seams like to obtain the most amount of protection you should also paint your headlights and license plate covers with Veil, a stelth coating that diminishes the radar guns ability to see your car.

Okay, now here comes the controversy, Radar Roy does not seam to like the Valentine V1, however, the V1 has been upgraded to include POP Radar Detection technology so it performes about as well as the models listed above.

    Re: Hey Mike, you there

You can't trust a web site that is biased to the detectors it sells.

In the US, POP Redar Detection is not considered accurate and reliable enough to be used in court or for traffic violations. However, some enforcement forces do use them. That is why all new Valentine I Radar units come with the ability to detect POP Radar, but such ability is deactivated from the factory. You simply call to have it activated.

Just a case of the one leading automatically to the other, Nick.

    Re: Radar Question

    Todoradares.com

This is a European store, run by one of our members. I strongly suggest that everyone who is planning on buying detectors, jammers and other stuff go here, if they live in Europe.

Radar Roy (Radarbusters) is also a very reputable merchant and even allows other brands on his discussion forums - really a good guy to deal with, for all you US types.

    Re: Radar Question

I did a fairly discreet install of the Valentine 1 in my cabrio 997s. Take a look in the Rennlist 997 section for description and a couple pictures. It's quite a good machine. Hard to hide it though I have come as close as you can for now.

    Re: Radar Question

You can buy a remote install kit and install it inside your bumper - of course you will lose laser detection. In any other case, installing it above the rear view mirror and routing the remote audio and display modules to your dashboard is a very stealthy install - nobody will see it unless they are looking for it in that place.

    Re: Radar Question

Are you guys familiar with Calibre K40? Although I just bought a V1, I am considering buying a K40? All hidden components. Bluetooth to wireless remote controller. Looks very tempting ...
