    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

In "real life", my wife prefers her new Vantage over her 997S. She reports that each time she drives it is a delight. The build level and feel of the car is in her opinion an absolute step up from her 997S. She's been a Porsche driver for years (Boxster, 996-4S and 997S), but is totally won over by the Vantage. In her words, "The Carrera felt in comparison light and stripped down like a go-cart, but the Vantage is a beefy, solid car. It's a completely different level up."

On the track, the Porche has an advantage, but on the road, the Vantage gives her a special experience that few get to enjoy. The drive is fabulous and she takes on curves with more surety in the Vantage. What's more the behavior of cars and people around the Vantage is completely different from that around her Porsches. Wherease other drivers were often aggressive to the Porsches, constantly challenging her or cutting her off, they treat the Vantage well and often make way for her. People whip out their cameras on the road or go to great lengths just to show her the thumbs up. That NEVER happened withe the Carreras.

Overall, It has been a positive move switching her from the 997S to the Vantage. The 997S is now owned by one of our friends. He is happy to have gotten his dream car. She is very happy about her Vantage and THAT is all I need to know. The switch was so positive an experience that she is supportive (actually insistent) of my taking delivery on a DBS in 2008.

And we have test-drove the vantage some months ago, it is a great car, but the 997S feels much more sporty, everything is more race feeling

Although the looks of the V8 and the sound note is amazing, although as I said the DB9 sound is just epic compared to the v8 vantage, I personally started both engines (both inside the dealer) and believe me there is no comparison...Talking about this, I still prefer 997S sound, and even more 997S with PSE!!!

The 997S make a sound? Not kidding, one day I was walking at the beach with a friend and, suddenly, a 997S appeared.I didn't see the car because I didn't hear it! My friend, who was looking at the street, saw the car and told me that it passed at the street...if he wasn't looking at that moment, we would never know that a 997S just passed us at the street.

Nice pics and picture perfect neighborhood. The guy who poured the curbing there must be an F1 fan.

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

Awesome shots guy Nice house too!

How many miles does she have on the car now if I may ask? Also any problems?

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

I think she's at about 3,000. It is her daily driver. No niggles except an engine light due to not closing the gas cap fully.

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

Ours arrives in March 2007. Still waiting on the pricing of the Prodrive kit for the exhaust and engine.

Here is a pic from my test drive.

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

A few have mentioned it already but I was very surprised when I drove a AMV8 all over Tokyo the other week. My 997 generates the odd nasty look and the odd boy racer trying to get in front of me or race me. The Vantage was completely different, people smiled, a bunch of young blokes all waved and gave me a thumbs up. Now, I wouldn't buy a car to please anyone! But, was pleasantly surprised.

The car I drove was a 2006. Very different to the 2005 and apparently the 2007 is even better. Small interior and build improvements etc.

The only thing I didn't like was the noise generated by the steering wheel when going very rough parts of the road at speed. There was a nasty noise and I was told quite frankly that the steering mechanism is from the Jag XK series and there is no current solution!

Lastly, I love Porsche and would also want at least one in the garage but the depreciation on a 911 these days is a joke. The Astons even in "secondhand car phobia" Japan is excellent. You can still sell 5 year old DB7's at a good price. A 5 year old 996 is by comparison a joke. Brand new GBP 70,000 and not probably GBP 15,000 - 16,000 depending on mileage. Anymore than 40,000 Km and you can take another GBP 2,000!

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

You think 911 depreciation is bad... I was offered a 1 year old DB9 volante at 30% below MRSP from a dealer...

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

A C4S is soo much better looking than any Aston IMO... Not that Astons are ugly, theyr gorgeous, but i think a 911 C4s is so much better looking.. Take a Turbo or something else and I may think differently but a Carrera 4S is the most attractive Porsche available at the mo IMO...Clean, powerfull lines without any big wing breaking that tear-drop shape....and those hips

This is the best comparison picture if you ask me, posted by a (former?) Rennteam member a couple of years ago. In this picture the Vantage looks like a spaceship and the 997 like a 1962 Beetle

You must be joking!!! I hope..

In Canada, 911s hold their value quite well but Aston is close to the worst.

A new DB9 coupe here is about 230K CAD, after one&half years of ownership and 6k CAD collison damage, it worth no more than 170K CAD now. And tat's market price not wholesale. The owner actually asked me if 120K would work for me.

Plus, I buy many kinds of Japanese version car mags every month including Rosso, Genroq etc. And in these books, 911s seem just fine. Not even close to the situation you mentioned above.

Wow...an Aston is uglier than a 997 S...I think it's better I have my eyes checked.

    Re: AMV8 vs 997 C4S

Yes, still around once in a while.

The bottom line here is that we greatly enjoy the Vantage over her previous Boxster, 996-4S, and 997S (all new BTW). The oft noted sense of occasion that comes with the AMV8 is repeated again and again. Her Porsches were just another ride among the throngs of tres ordinaire Porsches that inhabit this area. The sculptural beauty of the Vantage simply does not come out at all in photos. It's only when you actually walk around the car and look at it in 3D that you understand the awesome details in the shape and styling. It's not even a contest if you have owned both.

The funniest thing that reinforced how ordinary and unchanging her 997S was an occasion when she happened to drive a friend's twenty year-old Carrera SC to work. It was the same color as her 997S and not a single soul noticed it was a different car. It may be heretical to Porsche worshippers, but it was confirmation that the basic shape of the Carrera has so little changed in twenty years that most don't notice another Carrera. On the other hand, the first day her AMV8 appeared at work, practically the entire company snuck out over the course of the day to look at it. There were tons of phone messages circulated asking whose car it was.

Carrera - Loved and cared about by Porsche owners, but either not really noticed or if noticed often engendering hostility from those who instantly and unfairly assume that the owner is probably a jerk. It gets attention occasionally, but more often the kind of attention you don't want.

Aston Martin Vantage - Throngs of gawkers and admirers among those who recognize the car. People giving the thumbs up and smiling. Camera phones whipped out of pocket to take a picture. Boys always twisting their heads around to see the car. Cars going out of their way making room on the lanes for AMV8.

AMV8 ownership cost higher than a 997-4S? Absolutely AND worth it.

The AMV8 wins here by a long shot.
