Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

First time driving 997 GT3 in heavy rain with no noticeable lost in traction. I at first a little weary about taking it on the highway in heavy rain because of some the articles I read about it's performance in the rain. But no handling or traction control problems while going with the flow of traffic, 65-70 mph. However, there was a motorcyle doing about 80 mph in the heavy rain. Just crazy!

The biggest risk in heavy rain is acquaplaning - not loss of traction. The dangerous thing about acquaplaning is that it may occur without pre-warning. Acquaplaning risk increases with sport tires (like those of the GT3).

Re: Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

Erm... Isn't aquaplaning loss of traction due to water getting in the way of the tyres and the road???

But 65-70mph isn't that fast! Is it? I know you can hit a patch of standing water anytime, but..

Re: Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

my car did acquaplaning last year even with my c4s! luckying i safe it back !

Re: Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

In a GT3 with the semi-slick tires, 60-70mph is already too much. That is the reason why I do not dare to take a GT3 over a TT. I am not sure whether I can really restrict myself to drive extremely slow in comparison to all others on the street in bad weather. And in Germany you can have a lot of rain...

You can buy other tires with deeper grooves if you want...

Re: Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

Alternative N Rated options - at least equivalent sizing, if not specifically intended for the 997 GT3:

    235/30 ZR19 Front; 305/30 ZR19 Rear

    Bridgestone Potenza RE050A N0
    Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 N1

and if you're not fussed about an N Rating then:

    Pirelli P Zero Rosso Asimmetrico
    Yokohama Advan Sport

The term "traction" refers to the ability to transfer power to the road.

Therefore, acquaplaning situations may include loss of traction. However, loss of traction does not necessarily apply in a acquaplaning situation...

Not for the GT3 - only Michelin SportCup tires are approved for the GT3.

Re: Drove GT3 in heavy rain today.

MKSGR - you might want to check that. GT3SM's Full Silver RS arrived with P Zero Corsas...

That information was correct at one time, MKSGR, but has now been overtaken by events.

Did not know that... Has Porsche also approved any standard tires yet (i.e. neither Corsa nor SportCup)?
