Sorry, I wish I could add something proper to this thread but the snow (and dirt) is only high up in the mountains... (these two pics from last weekend, when I did a short trip to Lermoos in Austria to have a perfect Wiener Schnitzel at my favorite restaurant next to Hotel Alpenrose (our former "kids" hotel, first class, highly recommended), meeting my wife and one of her friends after skiing there.

Leawood911:Okay. You can show me nice scenery from Austria - that’s one thing - but describing a delicious Wiener Schnitzel is over the top torture for and Austrian stuck in Kansas. Heading out for a big steak tonight.
The Schnitzel was excellent...
I can also recommend the Putenschnitzel at Palmenhaus (Castle Nymphenburg in Munich), my favorite. We sometimes drive only to Munich to eat that damn Schnitzel there.

martini964:like me driving to montreal ( apart from seeing our in-laws ) just to eat Schwartz sandwiches
We have a pretty weird food "routine" sometimes: We drive to Munich to eat that excellent turkey Schnitzel and excellent garlic bread in a different location (seriously) and we enjoy our favorite Pizza at a location at Lake Ammer, especially in summer. I know this is stupid to drive 60 km or so just to enjoy a lunch but...

dinogb:nobody in Italy to eat an unbeatable " fiorentina " ???
Well, I usually enjoy pasta and pizza in Italy, not necessarily meat. For meat, I go to the US. Unbeatable filet mignons (or any kind of big ass steaks, incl. Porterhouse..."fiorentina" ). Also had some excellent filet mignons in Hong Kong.
Italy is basically three hours away from my home, maybe even less if I'm fast. We are often in Riva del Garda (Lake Garda) because it is close to us and we love to relax there. However, after four to five days, my wife gets "nervous", too quiet, too small, too boring. Perfect location for short (and highly relaxing) vacations though.

Never had a good steak at an Italian restaurant (seriously) but of course I had many bad steaks in the US as well, so there is no guarantee that in the US, all steaks are tasting good.
I suggest a foodie trip to Texas... Best meat I ever had was in Brazil though but thats a completely different story.

Lake Garda is near my home and I enjoy North Italy more than Austria or Switzerland, sorry. Yes, many German, NL and A tourists there but we found a wonderful hotel, the food is great and we enjoy relaxing at the (heated!!!...doesn't happen often in Europe ) outdoor pool. Only a few days though, after that we are "done" relaxing. Also very nice (small) roads for driving without annoying locals or the police. My wife speaks Italian pretty well (I only understand it, if people don't talk like a machine gun firing ), so we really enjoy Lake Garda. It is safe as well, compared to the South and like I said, for a short trip by car, just wonderful.

Only three month ago I discovered a very good restaurant in Affi, near the south-east border of the Lake Garda, not so far from Riva, and I have been there few times.
The name is Locanda Moscal, quite simple and not so expensive. You can find a delicious italian cuisine. I advise you to try it, and then inform me about your opinion, ciao, dino

OK - here is my opinion with Italian food, and I may now hurt many of my italian friends.
Believe it or not "a la Nona" is cooking like in the last millennium. Personally I think there is no other food as overrated as Italian food. You get carbs and tomato. If you are lucky you get some herbs on your food. Meat - is as bad as in any German restaurant - hardly any herbs on top, no marination, hard to swallow. These rich on carbs dishes are old fashion. Nevertheless - most Italians are eating a tiny portion of carbs as starter and a fish or meat as main, maximum of a side is a little bit vegetable which usually is flooded in olive oil (again - like 50 years ago). Maybe some Pizza bread next to it to get more carbs.
I agree - the Fiorentina above looks excellent, lots of details on it. It seems to be a good and yummy meat. But I was hundreds of times in Italy, lived 2 years in Rome and not often I got an enjoyable meat. My experience with fish is better than the meat.
If you want to have great meat, go to a US Restaurant. Someone who understands that the meat needs a treatment prior to cooking.

Marinating? Meat criminal.
Seriously: I never marinate my steaks/filets but I use a special salt which helps to release the flavor. Marinating often doesn't do any good because it really cannot penetrate the meat, so all you get is on the surface. It can also inhibit some specific flavors of the meat, careful here. I know that many people think that marinating makes meat more tender but this is mostly true for inferior meat qualities (many supermarkets sell marinated meat, don't touch this stuff!!!).
I eat my filets and steaks "pure"...and medium rare. Only.

dinogb:SciFrog:In Sirmione, on the south east side overlooking the water, there is a great gourmet restaurant modern looking.
The name, please ?

Our 14 year old son, he looks like a beanstalk , he barely eats but when he is in the US on vacation, he eats only filet mignon and he can't get enough of it. Once we are back in Germany, he barely eats again, so weird. My wife is desperate as you can imagine, draw blood from him a couple of times to make sure he is OK but nothing is wrong with him. He just likes his filet mignon in the US.
