    Does Porker = Porsche

I'm aware of BMW's being called Bimmers or Beemers, Mercedes Benz's being called Merc's or Benz's, Jaguars being called Jags, etc. But, since I've been reading Porsche magazines I've noticed the term "porker" being applied to Porsche's. Is this an accepted term for these fine cars?

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

Seems to be a British term...

    Yes

With the exception of the GT3RS they are all overweight with GT gadgets that don't make the car faster.

Unfortunately, I agree with Le Chef (and even the GT3RS is way overweight - no track car should be over 3,000 lbs), but I think this nickname has been used in the UK well before the recent weight gains (but Porsches always have been heavy compared to Lotus )

    No!

    No! Porsches are called 11s

Yes, Porsches are sometimes affectionately known as Porkers here in the UK. I have no clue over the origins though. It may be the over-weight thing, but I doubt it.

May I eloquently suggest that perhaps given the verb to 'pork' also means something rather rude...

It could be that Porsches just about f*** any other car on the road they are so good.

Or alternatively something more along the lines of how the old 911s used to f*** you when going around roundabouts with their weight all in the wrong place and no PSM/TC/perfect-chassis to save them like a modern 997 would have at it's disposal.

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

Yes, "Porker" is a British term BUT (even though it is well known to everyone in the UK) it is not used a lot except, it seems to me, by British motoring journalists (both on TV and in the print media). I think they definitely use this term out of affection.

I think the origin of the term is because a 911 has a fat, heavy rear end so it is overweight/pig-like and, to some people, the word "Porsche" resembles "Porker".

Nonetheless, I think, even in Britain, calling a Porsche "a Porker" is quite uncultured and unsophisticated. Not vulgar though.

The normal man in the street would usually call it a "Porsh" with 1 syllable (or even a "Pohwsh" or "Pawsh" depending on accent). Those in the know would call it a "Porsha". I pronounce it "Porshuh" as if pronouncing a normal German word.

(There's even an independent Porsche dealer in the UK called "Portiacraft"!)

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

I think this is the origin of the Porker name...'cause of this 917

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

I agree with easy_rider911. The big a** of the car is quite distinctive and just think about it: they've been passed and they're feeling inadequate for being passed. They see the big a** and so they have to give it a derogatory name.

No problem, it's almost flattery since the car will always be "better" than 99.9% of all cars on the road.

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

Yes, "porkers" is a term of endearment and admiration IMHO and I have used it for as long as I care to remember.

I used to live in the UK and probably assimilated it then, nonetheless, I think it is spot on!

    Re: Does Porker = Porsche

Maybe something to do with all the pork schnitzel over there?
