A couple photos taken at Nürburgring

The following two photos were taken recently at the Nürburgring by Heiko Mikala.

Or you can see smaller versions on another forum.

The pics of my April session at the N'ring are here (5MB):

And speaking of pics, here are some high-resolution (1600x1200) shots of my Turbo (17MB):

    They look like that:

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

Some great photos Pierre! But ...

Who is this criminal looking element obvious attempting to steal one of your wheels???

    S.

Must have been an awesome experience

FixedWing. Tell us how you did, what was the time?

Can anyone just hop into the track?

How is the car after the run?

    It was fun.

Nürburgring is a lot of fun. It is pretty close to me so I have an annual pass and go whenever I feel like it.

    For general info see here:

    http://www.nuerburgring.de/eng/angebote/sfahren.htm

And for opening times see here:

    http://www.nuerburgring.de/eng/angebote/sf_n_q3.htm

There are also many enthusiast sites about. In English I suggest you start here:

    http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

Be warned. The Northcircuit is an old and dangerous track. People do get killed here (mostly on bikes but sometimes in cars too). Last year someone was killed in a full race prepped GT3R. So be careful!

As for times, I have yet to time myself. Many recommend that you never do. It isn't like a circuit where you can push until you loose it and then back off a little. On the Northcircuit as likely as not they wouldn't find you for a week. There are few runoff areas. Mostly just armco, trees and steep drops.

So just assume that I'm one of the slower Porsche Turbo drivers.

    Rennteam get together!!!

    I launch this idea:
Why don't we organize a rennteam get together at the Ring in the near future?
I think it would be the best place to do it.
We could make it a tradition and each year have one in a different place.

Plus I received an e-mail from RC saying that we can all stay at his house! (not true, I don't want him to get in trouble with his wife...)

    What do you guys think?

    Re: Rennteam get together!!!

    Count me in!!!!!!!

Luigi we can make the trip together...

Of course, you can count me in.

RC will be one of those with the hardest time getting there ... Nürburgring is a long way from where he lives in the south of Germany. Still, I know we can count on him to be there.

    S.

Re: Of course, you can count me in.

    FixedWing,
RC is still closer than me, I'm around 8 to 9 thousand miles away .

    Re: Rennteam get together!!!

I would like to come as well!!!

    Re: Rennteam get together!!!

    Ciaoo Artemio!!!
La mia è in dirittura d'arrivo..non vedo l'ora!!!!

    And news about your turbo???

    Re: Rennteam get together!!!

yeah, but summer is a better time for me as I have to ship my car over there...

    No problem, Luigi

If you want to sleep with 10 other guys on a tiny little couch. Trouble with my wife? Naahh. She would simply shoot me, no trouble.

I'd love to come to the Nordschleife but I think we have to postpone such a possible meeting to next year's spring or summer. Right now I'm happy if I can drive my car once a week for half an hour. Work, family and little child...my daily driver is the ML55. Not bad but not a sports car.

The Nuerburgring is almost 600 km away from me, FixedWing is right. Not a short trip, at least not a trip I can do on a single day without falling asleep.
We could also meet on the Hockenheim Ring, it is not far away from Stuttgart.
    How about this:
    1. factory visit
    2. Weissach visit
    3. nice dinner
    4. track day in Hockenheim

Of course this is pure fantasy right now but if enough people are interested, we could contact Porsche Travel and ask them for a special tour for Rennteam.com members.

    Re: No problem, Luigi

Hockeneim and a factory tour sounds great to me!
Whoever is interested in such a Rennteam get together speak up.

Dario, noi sicuramente facciamo il viaggio insieme!Modena e Turbo spalla a spalla, non male...A proposito, quando arriva la tua belva?Notti insonni...

    Re: No problem, Luigi

    yeah, what he said!

Re: Some great photos Pierre! But ...

Yeah, that's me pretending to know what I do...

BTW, I went to the N'ring twice this year, both times with the Scuderia Hanseat, and I really recommend their course!
Good atmosphere, excellent way to learn the Nordschleife (and the GP-track) step-by-step, a lot of people (over 300 cars), etc. I already put my name on both next year's sessions!

Oh, and count me in for the Rennteam trip!

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

    Re: No problem, Luigi

    Ok for Hockeneim...when???

Luigi...i think the car is here Monday or thuesday...

    Ciaooo

    Re: No problem, Luigi

    Ciaooo

    Re: Rennteam get together!!!

    Hockeneim would be great!

I know about your waiting, now are only few days..it's almost over!! My turbo is great... by the way: 10 days ago i bought with one of my best friend a 360 Modena F1 (we share one week each one) and i have to say that even if the suond of the engine is fantastic, the steering and the driving is very very exciting...if i should keep only one of the two my pick - I know Luigi will disagree - would be the turbo: i feel it like a more complete/all season/ every day car.
    You'll love it.
Cerchiamo di andare ad Hockeneim..il 22/23 ott. sarò ad Imola, perchè non vieni anche li?

    Re: No problem, Luigi

...or what about leipzig, visit the new factory and check out porsche's own test track?

    Re: No problem, Luigi

    Just say when and where.

It's so sad what they did to Hockenheimring...

    Re: We should

really take a trip to Nurburgring together, as I can see you are quite familiar with the track

This summer, I promise i will ship my car to Europe.

Ship it? You should drive it William!!

First rule if Nürburgring is that there is always someone who is faster than you.

In fact, I was there again yesterday. Perfect day. Not quite fall yet but already one or two leaves in my radiator grill. Lots and lots of beautiful cars, especially for a Friday.

    S.

Re: I think i need an instructor first two lap..

Teach me the line and that's all I need... Its all about having fun, doesn't need to be the fastest :D :D

Tell me, What is the best route to take from the US to Europe?

    William

If you don't care about cost, flying your car over from the US to Europe would be fast and safe.
Lufthansa Cargo does such transports but I'm sure there are other airlines too.

The Nuerburgring is great but only if there aren't many people. Last time I've been there (a long time ago), a VW Golf and a motorcycle almost hit me because they didn't respect the driving line. One has to be very careful, there are a lot of unexperienced drivers out there on the "Ring" and I want to have fun, not returning back home with a crashed car.

I just proposed the Hockenheim Ring because it is a track near the Porsche factory and we could combine it with a visit at the factory and Weissach.
Again: this is just a suggestion. But if lets say 20 people want to make such a meeting happen, we might be able to arrange something through Porsche Travel. Me and CR will try to check that as soon as possible.

    Re: William

Do you know of any good insurance company in Germany for US customer that shipping the car there?

    Re: William

I'm not sure any german company would insure your car.
As far as I remember, Tom G. brought his car to Germany but he had an insurance from a US insurance company.
If you have US plates on your car, it is highly unlikely that a german insurance company will provide insurance coverage.

Re: Do you think US insurance

    will cover 'Nurburgring' accident

    Yes!

Yes, if you have road insurance in Europe you normally have coverage at the Ring. This is the big advantage of driving there.

During public open days the track is considered a normal toll road and road rules apply. If you have an accident the police will investigate and if you are at fault they will give you a ticket.

There are a very few German policies which specifically exclude the Nürburgring but most European polices do not. Obviously the insurers don't like to pay these losses so they can be very tough about it. Many policies exclude competitions or timed events so if the police report mentions a running stop watch in the car they might not pay. That sort of thing.

RC is right about many inexperienced drivers being there -- especially on the weekends. Lots of people go out with the family to drive around the famous Nürburgring. Also, many bikes now go for the first time. They even have tour buses! If RC hasn't been in a few years when he does go back he will find the situation worse. But it is a long track and tends to swollow the crowds. The trick is to pick your time well.

One thing is that you cannot go quite as fast as you might go on a modern track because of the safety of the track. The place is like nothing you've experienced before. This also allows you to deal with the traffic a little better.
