The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

The car has not been off the lot for more than 12 hrs and the bottom lip is scratched prettty bad. Underestimated the parking bar distance and hit it with the front spoiler pretty good. Will have to cough off some money to get another one. I haven't been home yet, but as soon as I get home, I'm going to try to get pictures posted. I'm not too computer savy so hopefully I can get this done. Thanks.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

    Ohhh, that sucks

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

    brand new, how sad.
Hope you can make it 100% again!
also please post pics after the fix

Funny thing about this car, because I have even on occasion hit columns in parking garages (!); that distance is misleading and hard to estimate too. There's a huge snoot on it (overhang in front of front wheels).

RELAX. It's just a car. Forget about it for a few weeks and see if it still bothers you. I dinged my P-car door with my BMW. When getting out of BMW I even said to myself, "be careful not to ding the Porsche's door." All sorts of sh*t happens. It seems like it is all just waiting for the next "insult" to your car's pristine perfection.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

All I can say is go slow over driving bumps and go into driveways as an angle.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

mine scratched in first month of ownership...

just let it be...sooner you will forget about it..

you may experience windshield chips as well just to remind you..

    anywas good luck!

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

I reversed mine into a bollard on the way home from Stuttgart - 6 hours old. This was a few years ago but I actually think its quite funny now

LOL. Crazy thing the human mind.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Scraping the front lip is just another part of the GT3 owner experience. The sooner you accept this, the happier you'll be.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

The front of the 997 (and maybe all 911s) extends (bows out) WAY more than it appears to from inside the vehicle. I put a tall empty carboard box in my garage to "tap gently" with the vehicle, happened WAY sooner than I expected. Be wary if you are a new owner.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Porsche probably designed it to take the abuse and that it is why it seems relatively cheap to replace and also comes from the factory without it installed. Going to happen to all of us eventually ;-)

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

three days after I got mine I pulled into a rest stop in Connecticut and scraped it pulling into the curb!

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

I did it once to the front lip on my turbo, and learned never to pull all the way into a space again. You really don't need to get anywhere near the barrier.

    Haven't scraped since.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Now I know why the lip is painted satin black. You can replace it without repainting it. Bad news for me. I ordered my car with the lip painted the body color. Pretty silly in retrospect. I guess that my second front lip will be satin black after all (when I scrape the first one up).

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

If you get it painted, I would at least get it clear bra'd to give it some protection.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

When driving around the regular streets this skid plate helps,--but obviously not for parking lot chocks. Years ago when I lowered a 911 I put a little sticker on the steering wheel for awhile,--"Caution. Low spoiler"

    It helped me to remember.

This is available from Perf. Products.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

    2. (But you need to augment it with a few more bolts).

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

If you drive... things happen. I drive my 997 rain and shine about 15K per year. The pleasure far outweighs the pain of a ding or two... I keep my body man in business cause a damaged porsche is a sad porsche.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

I have a '06 997. I can't see how the lip can be replaced? Please advise.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Thanks for the photos DanL. Just screw in place and forget about it. Nice.

For parking lot chocks I guess one could modify and attach curb feeler (have it face forward in a vertical and horizontal slanted position).

Do they still sell those things?

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

I'll bet SOMEONE makes curb feelers still! Might look a little odd but if it saves you a wheel or a chin spoiler,--perhaps it could be the way to go. Try the Pep Boys for something like that. I would have mine made of brass and black annodized.

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Places like WalMart now sell cheap $90 back up cameras for cars. Just install it on the front !

Re: The agony. Scrapped the front end already.

Wow! Integrating that into the PCM would be ultra useful! I don't need active navigation when I'm in reverse, but a real-time video would be great (particularly for a cabriolet).
