    M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

I never really appreciated BMW's but for a puny 3.2 I6 that thing really pulls....very aggressive gearing I'd say. Now, just couple this gearing to a V8 kompressor motor and that Nardo SL55 result just coule be believable

What is the top speed of the CSL? Does anybody know? Is it true that it is limited to 250 normally and only when you have a racing license they will disable it? And how fast will it be then?

Had one behind me on the autobahn this week. Well, I didn't let him pass

Re: M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

From what I've heard yes they will disable it if you have a racing license, but it does about 165-170mph and then tops out...

Re: M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

It should reach at least 175-177mph (285-290km/h), IMO that is, unless it has an unusually short 6th gear which I doubt since 6th is not ussually shortened like the other ones for greater acceleration.

Its true the CSL is speed limited to 250km/h (though in real life is actually around 263km/h according to the magazine tests, in ///M models I seen at least) and not only you need to show a pilot licence to have it removed, but also sign a special contract (that makes two since you have to sign another one for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires). It seems this will also happen with the new M5.

"Its true the CSL is speed limited to 250km/h (though in real life is actually around 263km/h according to the magazine tests"

is that according to their independent speed measuring tests or the speedo. if the later, bmw is notorious for having fast speedos.

Re: M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

Actually, at least here in Switzerland, it's VERY easy to have the 250Km/h limiter removed. All you have to do is ask for it at the time of ordering the car. Yes, they make you sign a piece of paper for that but it's simply a request to remove the Vmax limiter. However, it's not like a contract where you have signatures of both parties involved. All the form says is that you intend to use the car for motor sports. It even states specifically that any warranty, as stated in the 'regular' contract is NOT affected by the change.

Also, there is no mention anywhere of needing to display a racing license for this.

In regards to the tires. Again, just a piece of paper to sign so that the purchaser is aware of reduced wet weather capabilities of the rubber, as well as making the buyer aware of a considerably shorter mileage of this compound.

I actually have signed both forms when ordering a CSL late last year and still have the copies on file. For various reasons I ended up changing my mind just before delivery and so I'm still enjoying my MY2000 C4C.

PS: They claim Vmax to be 280Km/h without the limiter!

According to their independant measurements, which is probably 280km/h according to the speedo

Good info Gregor so the pilot licence they claimed is not official and pretty much look the other way, and a wager is enough, thats more comon sense IMO.

They claim 280km/h for the CSL? thats what they claimed for the older E36-M3 I had also

I think it varies from country to country. In Germany, you need to show a valid C racing license as far as I know.
My dealer sold one and he got some sort of documents for the owner he had to sign and they (BMW) also requested a copy of the C license. But again, it can vary from country to country. Personally I think this is pure BS or just for marketing purposes. AMG offers 280 kph on the SLK 32 AMG and believe me, the SLK 32 feels at 200 kph like the normal M3 (not even CSL) at 250 kph.

Re: M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

    Carlos,

I think it very much depends on the country you live in. I did have a similar discussion with RC back in October of last year and he told me that in Germany the Rennlizenz is mandatory to order the car without the Vmax limiter.

    Check out this old thread.

Re: M3 CSL 0-270km/hr onboard video....

I see. Isn't it ironic that they make you show a racing licence to unlock 250km/h + speeds for the buyer yet they fit as stock (and without racing license requirement) the Pilot Sport Cups which are the most dangerous tires for a street car due to their non-progressive nature at the limit characteristic of R-compound tires and infamously lousy and dangerous wet grip? its all BS and image/marketing/politics
