I had the very first 986 boxster 2.5 in EU.
and sadly the error list was long.
The pre-fun (3years since introduction)) was better then the reall thing.
After 3 months the car was crashed (I belief the first total loss boxter too, a sad record) on a ... Porsche boxster event!
And yes, I bought immed. again a boxster, witch model was
now 6 months on the road
and I still own this car :-) not one problem in almost 7y btw.
However my wife bought also a boxster last year and the difference clear.
The new boxster is much more smooth in every way.
I bought myself a few months ago a new c4s and
the car seems to be a no-problem car too

I would definetely not buy a 996 or 986 from the first two years of production. The cars after the facelift (996) and the power increase (986) are actually the most reliable and provide a very good quality.
I don't think it'll be the same with the 997, I got one of the first 996 Turbo in Bavaria (my dealer's first car) and I was very satisfied with quality. The 986 and the 996 were completely new cars (change from air cooled to water cooled, 986 was something really new for Porsche) and they were affected by Porsche's bad financial situation back in 1996/1997, one reason why there have been quality issues at the beginning.
Look at the Cayenne: there have been minor flaws in the first year of production but they're pretty reliable cars.
