    08 build

Considering a new 997 at around an August or September collection, so would assume a July-ish build slot.

The dealer mentioned something about an "08 model build" at around that time saying that Porsche's build runs go from a midyear point. Having the following years' model would incorporate modifications Porsche have decided up to that time.

The thing is, I'm trying to pull the slot forward by about a month whilst there is advice / pressure to recommend waiting until this "08 build" is there.

I would be interested in your thoughts on this. Don't Porsche add modifications as they discover and rectify them, or will an "08 build" be reasonably different?

    Thanks

    Re: 08 build

MY08 changes reportedly include the double-clutch gearbox and the new AWD system from the Turbo. Major changes if you ask me.

Plus the MY08 most probably may be the last chance to get these new goodies with the current 997 shape, which looks better to me than all pics from the facelift I've seen so far (due in MY09)...

A whole new AWD system for MY 2008 when the MY 2007 was already new? Does not seem likely to me.

    Re: 08 build

Could you explain "MY08" and what this normally means for them?

    Ie.
    MY = ?? Mid year?
Would there be an MY08 for the Cayman / Boxster / Cayenne as well?
How many changes are there be in one of these releases (if that is the correct word)? Is it substantial, a cluster of mods / fixes aquired from a year's sales or is it to boost the sales?

    Thanks

    Re: 08 build

THe AWD system upgrade is for the non TT 997's, going from the viscous coupling operated system to the PTM as used on 997TT.

The MY 2007 C4/C4S AWD system still uses a viscous clutch which is a multiple-disc clutch that consists of a series of interleaved plates. The space between these plates is filled with a high-viscosity silicone fluid. If the front and rear axles begin to rotate at different speeds, the frictional properties of the silicone fluid cause torque to be directed towards the plates that are rotating more slowly.

On the MY 2007 997TT the AWD system employs an electronically controlled multi-disk clutch that responds to traction changes almost instantaneously. Onboard sensors measure a range of values, including the rotational speed of all four wheels, the car's lateral and longitudinal acceleration, and the current steering angle. The sensor data is analyzed in real time, enabling immediate adjustments in the torque split between the front and rear axles.

Thanks for this very good and easy to understand explanation, Jerry. Do you know if this will change the weight of the car?

    Re: 08 build

I'm not sold on some of the talk that the facelift will come MY09. The reason being, the next generation 911 (so-called 998) will be due out likely 2 years after that date and I doubt Porsche will market strategize the investment for only 2 years. I still feel strong that the facelift will be out MY08 and announced next Spring.

We shall see with all those spy photos flying around. Porsche can't keep their secrets too much longer.

    Re: 08 build

Pikey - the MY refers to Model Year and Porsche release their "new model" after the factory's summer holiday so usually anything produced from after the return to work becomes the "new " model and usually incorporates a few changes. So a car produced in say September 2006 will actually be a 2007 Model (MY07)and the chassis number will reflect that.
    Hope that all makes sense?

I agree. I think that facelift will be out rather sooner than later.

Other car mfgrs do it quite quickly, there must be some demonstrable failsafe sales/profit advantage to doing it.

If necessary get off your cloud and start to wonder: Why would Porsche NOT look to increase sales and profits in ANY way possible?

The Turbo might not be effected by the facelift. Why? Because BMW M3 kept the "classic" (non-Bangle-ized) look for at least a couple years after the 5 series started looking like a fugly bloated whale. I dunno why, but nobody complained sales for unchanged M3 stayed strong; as will sales for the unchanged Turbo?
