    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

Porsche should hire you, I'm sure the final product would be much better That's an impressive report RC, better, much better than any other sports car magazine, thanks for sharing.
Now send this report to Porsche, maybe the 2005 modell will have all those bugs worked out

    By the way great picture

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

    Great review RC! Thanks!

I agree with all of it I believe. I have experimented with the PCM off quite a bit. Even off-road the Cayenne is very stable with PCM off. Steering is still very neutral in corners or maybe a little power oversteer is possible if you really push it. Power oversteer is just not possible with PSM on. Under extreme demands it even cuts the throttle to keep the rears from spinning.

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

Truly outstanding report, RC. I sincerely hope that SOMEONE at Porsche reads these things. The shift problem can be quite annoying -- especially for a $100k vehicle. I can understand having to live within EPA (or equivalent) mileage guidelines, but it would seem to me to be a no-brainer to offer -- and charge -- for a voluntary update that can correct this.

As for running with the PSM off, I'm toying with reversing the button logic so that the car starts with it off unless I select it to on. I don't know....

I did pull the muffler and go with a Y pipe setup; definitely brings out the V8 buried inside. On hard acceleration it was maybe a tad too loud, so I have softened this with the installation of two small mid-stream high-flow bullet mufflers. Oddly, this small reintroduction of backpressure seems to have also helped out on the torque side! Haven't actually measured that -- just a feel.

Some other stuff I highly recommend (at least for US folks)....

    1) set up a diode to convert the side markers -- either amber or white -- to blinkers when a turn is selected. Much more visibile from the side -- I consider this a basic safety issue.

    2) Add the rear dual fogs (which no one in the US uses) to the the brake light feed. A no-brainer.

    3) Upgrade the high beam and corner lamp bulbs. Personally I could care less about 'matching' but the additional light is welcome and it makes a difference in the corners.

    4) Depending on interior color (ie not for black) paint the cheap plastic center roof console with the sunglass holder. Matched to the interior it looks MUCH better in my view (see pic here... web page).

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

Nice review RC, very informative and worthy of a good read.

But i've got a question for you.Does your suv has Tiptronic S transmission?

Can you explain me how it works.I've red in some mags that it has 3 diferent ways of working.Fully Aumomatic, Buttons on Steering Weel and by the Joystick on center console (Shifter, Tiptronic Gear Selector).

If it works these way can it be adapted to a 911.

    Thanks again for the report....

    Woshhhhhhh.

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

thanks RC, highly interesting read -- i really don't get why the engine/exhaust sound is so disappointing and this "shifting/throttle response issue" is even weirder... having in mind who the manufacturer is...

i really liked the throttle response and the V8 growl of our BMW X5 4.4i sport (stolen in the meantime btw) -- so the ML55 does it right, the X5... why is the cayenne behind? i hope some PAG engineers will read your report!!

I'm not sure I understand your question.
The Aisin auto tranny can't be adapted to the 911 and why would you want that?
Yes, it is called Tiptronic but it is a different manufacturer than on the 911. And it is actually an ordinary automatic tranny with some buttons on the steering wheel and the possibility to switch to manual, etc. But it is no sequential shifting, not even near to it.

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

    Thanks for the reply

But it's an avaliable option for the cayenne right?

By the way, after you got "rid" of the e55, excluding the old m5, did you consider the s class?

i drove today 1 s320 cdi from 2000 it was very cool, very smooth, lots of pleasure driving it for about 10 minutes.

    woshhhhhh

I think I still don't quite understand your question because the Tiptronic S is standard on the Cayenne Turbo, there is no other option.
I never considered the S-class because it is too big and I would have needed to go for the S55 AMG or S600.
Another limousine? I decided the E55 was my last limousine. The new Porsche sedan might be interesting for me but I decided to go for a SUV as a family car. The sportscar will follow in 2-3 years, depending on how good the 997 Turbo will be (;)) and of course depending on my financial possibilities in 2-3 years. Time will tell.
I drove the S-class too and it is nice but nothing more me. I can drive a Mercedes S-class at 70, not now at 39.

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

I asked you about the tiptronic s because on your report you dont say anything about how the tiptronic works/feels by using the joystick (shifter on center console).

And acording to all the mags here in Portugal that i've red say that the tiptronic s tranmission for the cayenne (turbo and s)is an option and it costs about 3500 euros. And one of the functions of the tiptronic s is that you can use it manually by using the joystick just like the smg on the z4.

Maybe the standard transmission for the cayenne here in Portugal is manual.

Maybe i got it all wrong but i'm going to check the mags again.

Maybe this clears up the fog a little bit :

    1. the Cayenne V6 and Cayenne V8 are available with manual transmission, Tiptronic S is optional (Turbo comes with Tiptronic S only, worldwide!).
    2. the Tiptronic S on the Cayenne is made by japanese company Aisin, the Tiptronic S on the 996 is made by Mercedes(!). The Cayenne has a 6-speed Tiptronic S, the 996 has a 5-speed Tiptronic S. The name Tiptronic S is actually a marketing "gag", nothing more.
    3. it doesn't make a difference if you shift using the buttons on the steering wheel or the shifter (joy stick as you call it). Yes, you can switch to manual but performance is the same. I like the PSM OFF setup much better than using the M mode of the Tiptronic S. The steering wheel buttons are pretty useless because the position isn't good.

A last point: never believe the press, especially when they're talking about Porsche cars.
Reasons: most journalists testdriving a 100000 Euro Porsche drive home in their 15000 Euro Golf. They don't have a clue about Porsche cars and how they drive, they just use the data they get from the manufacturer and make a nice story with nice pictures out of it.
The most reliable reports are...owner reports. This is why I think the Internet is the best source for car information.

    Re: Cayenne Owner Report available

Thanks RC, very great writeup, you wrote every single thing I have on my mind. I bet you know how I feel too!!
