    Spare tire questions

I am a newbie - actually a wannabe - since i have not even received my ordered car. I am not really happy about not having a spare tire. Does the 997 have the wheel well, or whatever provisions of the 996 or earlier models that allows one to fasten a spare if they choose to?

Also, my salesman informed me that the actual diameter of the rear is different that the front. So the rolling speeds are always different. So, because of computer sensors, etc., if I was to put a spare that was not an equal diameter, front for back or back for front, when I was moving the computer would possibly think I was in an unusal driving condition and would try to make adjustments through braking etc, and ultimatly I could do damage to the car (if I were to attempt to drive with a improperly sized spare).

But ultimatly, if I can prove that it is safe to drive with a spare AND I can properly fasten a spare, I would like to add this feature to my car.

Anyone have any information to enlighten me?

    Re: Spare tire questions

It is possible to either put a full-size spare instead of the rear seat (I would not do that ), or the collapsible spare wheel from the 996 C4.
You'll have to find a way to fasten the wheel properly, but at least it can fit in the front trunk.

I couldn't find the thread that had the exact part numbers, but here is what you can do:

    Re: Spare tire questions

    Hi jplanaux:
Congrats in advance on your new ride.
Although the diameters do differ slightly, you can use a collapsible spare as The Groom said.
This post (by me) on Rennlist shows all of the parts/pics you need for a 9974/S: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=279371&highlight=spare+tire

The main difference in a 9972/S is that the spare can actually be mounted vertically in the boot owing to the larger space vs a 4series. MMD posted this method of securing the spare in this fashion: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=279156

    Re: Spare tire questions

Nice spare solution, but what do you do with the flat tire especially if it is the rearr tire that goes out?

I am on a long trip with the wife's/girlfriend/lover's luggage occupying the rear section of the interior, do I leave thw flat tire by the road or the the luggage?

    Re: Spare tire questions

If the rear is filled with the GF's luggage and you need to carry your flat - either she goes or her lugggage goes - but I'd let her make the decision!
In all seriousness, remember the spare tire is just a temporary fix to get you to a dealer. So - cram it all in! A 305 will fit in the rear after sliding the seat fwd.

    Re: Spare tire questions

    jplanaux,
I don't have a spare and don't plan on getting one. Sure I hope I don't get a flat. If I do my plan is to call a wrecker. I have been lucky and have not had a flat on any car I drive in years but I'm sure my time will come. The problem is you always get a flat at the worst possible time.

    Re: Spare tire questions

If you carry the collapsible spare there will always be room for the big-a**ed flat. You just put the flat in the back seat, take all the displaced junk in the back seat and shove in in the trunk space vacated by the spare. More junk? Then that goes in the passenger's lap, or stuffed up in the back at the cost of rearview mirror visibility.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the following:

The overall diameter of the wheel/tire on 997 is one inch greater than the 996.

The 996 spare WILL work on the 997 without problems to electronics or suspension.

The _diameter_ of wheel/tire of 997 is the same front and back. Only their widths are different.

Carrying a spare is an excellent idea. Unless you have good luck with the tire goop, a flat can cost you a whole day or more (try getting a replacement tire in a few hours where you live, as an experiment. ).

    Re: Spare tire questions

So will the tire cover also fit a 295 (in my case) or need to get a separate tire cover for it?

vtrader, if you are inclined to go on a long trip with your wife, girlfriend AND lover and all their luggage in a 997, the risk of a flat tire might be the least of your problems.

But to answer your question, you might well find yourself having to leave the wheel at the side of the road to pick up later, if still there.

Preferred option is obviously to call a flat-bed truck. Calling the wrecker, as I think somebody suggested above, would be kinda extreme.

The WHEEL size (and therefore the inside diameter of the tires) is one inch larger on some 997s than 996s - 19" against 18" nominal diameter.

The outside diameter of the 19" 997 tires is kept close to that of the 18" 996 tires by reducing the ratio of tire sidewall height to tire width.

I'd be interested to know that too, as I've never seen one of those tire covers.

    Re: Spare tire questions

The tire cover that Porsche sells for a few bucks is basically a giant plastic bag (I have one!). I think a huge Hefty trash bag would probably work just as well.

Thanks for the info. In that case, I also have a few. Trash bags, I mean.

I thought it would be a woven nylon bag like that used for storing the spare wheel in the trunk of a 996.

    Re: Spare tire questions

Sorry Fritz,...I may have misunderstood. There is the cover that Porsche sells for your flat tire (which is just a big trash bag),....for a spare tire cover, I used a nylon cover from www.tirecovers.com size "O" which fits the collapsible spare just fine.

    Re: Spare tire questions

"Trash bag" for protecting car interior from dirty spare is HUGE.

Needs a 6.5 foot circumference; not a common garbage bag size (bag is 38-40 inches at opening when flat).

You could get one of those smallish blue tarps which are 7x9 feet (or something) and use cordage to pull all the grommets together to encapsulate the tire. Cheap and good to have for other roadside maintenance reasons as well... .

    FWIW

    No need to be sorry.

I'd just assumed the "cover" referred to was a more robust one, like those supplied by the Tirecovers company you linked to.

    Re: Spare tire questions

If you have a catastrophic tire failure that's one thing. If you pick up a nail (more likely) I simply propose that you carry a radial tire repair kit and a couple of other tools. Beats sitting at the side of a highway waiting on AAA or 1-800-PORSCHE. It will at least get you to civilization.

Thanks for the info. I will most likely go this route.
