Nokian Tires "World's Safest Winter Tire"

Has anyone here had any experience with Nokian (from Ivalo, Finland) Hakkapelitta Winter SUV Tires? 275/40R20 XL 106T (design B) T rated for speed up to 118mph. "World's Safest Winter Tire"
Features:
Full Depth Locking Sipes/Angled Tread -creates 1000's of sharp, biting edges for enhanced traction and safety
Arrowhead Tread Directional - expels water and mud effectively while providing outstanding lateral grip
12 Row Patented Eco Stud System - better grip and responsiveness on polished ice while giving smoother quieter ride
Jointless Nylon Belt - helps prevent tread separations while providing a smooth comfortable ride

My dealership is recommending these over the Pir. Ice and Snow, and they say that I will get several seasons out of these vs. the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow.

Thoughts? Comments?

It depends on your weather condition. I have experience with Nokian/Pirelli/Michellin (please don't pick on the spelling) winter tires. Nokian may be the best in deep snow but on wet (like a bit above 0C) it is actually quite slippery compares to the other 2 brands. Between the other 2 brands, I find the Pirelli more sporty but not the best in heavy snow. I live in Toronto Canada where temp is mostly between (+0 to -20C) in winter, city streets are plowed within 24 hours; I will choose Pirelli/Michellin. But then, my experience are in ~200hp sedan and sports coupe. Hope this help.

Oh also, your dealer is correct that Nokain will last longer but they are also noisier. Dealers uaually recommend whatever they have in stock.

They have nothing in stock for 20" winter tyres so they just gave me some recommendations for that size. Their main tire guy swears on the Nokians and says they will certainly outlast the Pir Scorpians, but they are quite a bit more pricey. I am getting 4 20" Sport Technos (9" all around) and the Nokian Tires for $4200 USD mounted and balanced and drivin' out the door, so all in all not too bad for package pricing.

Where your Nokian Studded? Was that making them more noisy? I was also planning on getting the non-studded AW plus 2's now which are V rated, and supposedly grip better in slush and on ice?

Non-studded. But my application is on different car, different tire size, so my info may not be 100% applicable to you. By all mean Nokian makes very good winter tires, I am really talking about 9/10 or 9.5/10.

I use 235/18 Nokian Hakka suv on my cayenne in the winter. Very happy with them.

I have the same thing on my Range Rover and yes while being a little noisier, they are great in snow.

I've always used Nokian winter tires (on 911s, audis, everything) they quite simply are the best SNOW tire you can buy.

Very nice to hear the positive feedback. They are all strapped up on my new 20" Sport Technos just waiting at the dealer to be put on my sled. Not close to snowing here yet (I Hope) for another couple of weeks so I will wait until after Thanksgiving to part with the 22's again for the winter.

i live in Finland and to be honest, there is NO COMPARISON to nokian versus other wintertyres. Nokian is best, with or without spykes. (if you are driving on bad conditions)

Nokian is a market leader regarding winter tires in Scandinavia, maybe because their products are very good on snow and ice.
I have the Nokian WR on my 997 Turbo and I made a few observations which may not be valid for the SUV version tire but I share them with you:

1. not that good on dry pavement, especially if outside temperature exceeds 10 degrees Celsius. Very nervous around the steering and during braking, too sensitive to direction changes. Definetely not a tire for driving mostly at temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius and dry pavement.

2. pretty satisfying dry performance as soon as outside temperature drops below 5 degrees Celsius, "nervousness" still remains but to a much lower level.

3. good results on wet pavement, even at temperatures slightly above 10 degrees Celsius. Brake distance is pretty good, car remains highly controllable, even the steering doesn't get too nervous during braking on wet pavement, ABS activation very smooth.

Can't say much about snow or ice or temperatures below zero degrees Celsius but according to somebody from Porsche who was involved in tire development, the Nokian seems to be the premium choice for the 997 Turbo when it comes to snowy and cold areas. I hope he is right, last winter was horrible in Bavaria with lots of snow and very cold temperatures.

Btw: I have the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow on our Cayenne Turbo Powerkit and I'm not too happy with it, especially during heavy snow. I had the Dunlop Winter M2 on our former ML55 AMG and I was able to drive up a toboggan run (I hope this is the right english word for it, this is like a track in the mountains where people can slide down in their sleighs, some are a couple of kilometers long) which I mistakenly took for a street to a restaurant at the top of a mountain

and back (restaurant and street were closed due to too high snow, only the toboggan run was open

).

If you don't need to have 19'' rims on your Cayenne (Turbo S, Powerkit), go for 18'' rims and 18'' winter tires, they're much better on snow/icey streets.

RC, I thought I remembered that you didn't like the Scorpion Ice & Snow tires. I just sold my old ML, so I am forced to buy a second set of wheels/tires for the CTT. Have been waiting for more N-rated tires to come along, but the only option for the PowerKit seems to be the Scorpion Ice & Snow 255/50/19. I'd rather stay away from the narrower tread, as my snow usage will be VERY minimal, but the 275/45/19 size in that tire is NOT N-rated, as far as I can tell. Any other suggestions for light-duty ice and snow?

i agree with RC. On a dry roads or warm temperatures Nokian tyres sucks because of their softness, but when the Real Winter comes the fun really begins with Nokian tyres.

The Pirelli isn't that bad on dry and wet pavement, it just doesn't give me the confidence feel the Dunlop Winter M2 gave me in my former ML55. For heavy snow, definetely the wrong tire in my opinion.
For "light" snow and ice use, the Pirelli is actually pretty capable.

Thanks, RC. I may have to give them a try. Any ideas on why the 275/45/19s aren't N-rated? Understand that they are too wide for heavy snow, but that's really not an issue for me.

Had first HEAVY storm here in Chicago today and powered right through over a foot of snow on unplowed roads for 30+ miles without a problem.

They did also seem to handle well in wet weather at most temps (only drove on them while the weather was in the 60's (it dropped from 60 to 23 overnight!), but seemed a touch sloppy in dry weather on tight turns at higher speeds, as was mentioned at temps above 50 - 60F

But VERY VERY happy with these on a set of 20" Sport Technos (although smaller sizes will perform even better)
