I read this rumor elsewhere. What gives it credibility is the aggressive nature of Porsche's buying in into VW. There had to be a reason other than being a large shareholder. With Porsches' holdings in VW, internal conflict of interest are enormous. The only way to resolve them is separate out the premium brand as has been rumored.

It is a good move because they will be exploiting the brand image of Porsche to increase market share for the Audi, Lambo and Bently. I have said all along that Porsche is becoming the GM/Ford sport car manufacturer. If this rumor is true, it certainly validates my opinion.

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

I hope Porsche doesn't over extend themselves.

If they bought the entire VAG group and let it function independently, they could go back to being a low-volume manufacturer eventually (if the customer base ever decides to punish them), without huge financial concerns.

I agree, in the long term this may help Porsche become more exclusive, assuming the monster margins they make on sports cars can be replicated with Audi. Not sure how this would affect the Porsche/VW relationship since the Cayenne and Panamera both have extensive VW underpinnings...

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

I thought Mr Piëch wanted Porsche to purchase VW mostly out of personal grounds. But it'd make also sense if Porsche only bought Audi. Indeed, wasn't the Audi brand as we know it built by noone else but Mr Piëch himself?

Besides, acquiring only the luxury brands would make sense, as Porsche is already a luxury manufacturer. I see many of us are concerned about Porsche getting over-extended. If PAG does not buy the budget brands, it'd be less of a stretch.

Porsche is a luxury brand? Since when? It makes good expensive sport cars but certainly not considered a luxury brand. If you meant exotic that description of Porsche no longer applies given its penchant to mass produce.

Porsche makes a good car like Toyota Honda, Nissan and BMW.

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

Nick, you continue to occupy the digital nadir when it comes to anything Porsche.

Porsche is more than just a luxury "brand."

    Porsche is actually a "lovemark."

A lovemark is a product of intrinsic quality that is above a mere brand or a trusted brand. It is bought on passion and love and will perceivedly enhance a owners self esteem, pleasure and status. Porsche is as much of a lovemark as Ferrari, Prada, Rolex and Dom Perignon.

I think you are too confused, stilted, cynical or just too rich to have an objective viewpoint about Porsche. A few days in a Russian Lada would straighten you out about what constitutes a luxury car.

Maybe you confuse luxury with trim, in that case look at the options and prices in Porsche's Exclusive catalog. Or if you think that production volume negates a products luxury status amongst buyers you only need to look at the sales volumes of other luxury consumer goods.

As for Porsche being "just a good car" like BMW, Nissan or Toyota, try some university courses in marketing, statistics and supply chain operations. You will see wich company is used as the prime success story for luxury goods manufacturers. Hint. They have a track at Weissach.

Some new knowledge would not hurt you ya know.

I will say that if Ferrari built as many cars as Porsche it would not have the resale of a Porsche, due to lack of quality. So you call a Ferrari a luxury brand with half the quality? I would call Porsche a luxury brand more so than Ferrari based on not just supply and demand...but quality built into every car and with quality materials with superior engineering. I would call Ferrari a luxury brand based on supply and demand. I would also include Ferrari based on quality materials and engineering. Your point is based on getting all the Porschephiles stirred up. We know that you really love Porsches and just want them to produce fewer cars so you loose less money on them. I would rather lose money on them because I know it was well enjoyed and I could get the car in a reasonable time frame. I could not get a Ferrari now if I wanted one...so I don't want it, period. They will never get my brand loyalty if I can't get one.

Excellent post!!! I couldn't agree more. Some people just don't get it.

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

The resale phenomenon of Ferrari cars in only in the US, sorry to burst your bubble.

And in the US, F's resale value trick apart for a lucky few, Porsche prices cannnot be beat for the whole package in a sports car despite a small deficit in HP.

I wonder how the comparison would look like if you'd compare not only resale value, but total cost of ownership (including insurance, service etc.) - even more so, if you'd compare total cost of ownership per DRIVEN MILE

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

Nick is abs. right, Porsche with 100.000 cars per year is not a luxury brand.

Not completely correct. It IS a luxury brand, but it isn't exotic anymore.

You mean, as opposed to Ferrari making a ????? car like FIAT.

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

Come on guys, when will you learn? Nick is from my observations just another troll, disguised as a devoted Ferrari tunnel vision customer. He is properly just bored, so he tries to stir up Porsche stuff every now and then. To each his own.

Re: Porsche to buy Audi, Lambo...

has ferrari bought any of fiat? no, they are owned by fiat. porsche ag has been an extremely successful automobile business and they still produce some of the most coveted cars there are. i'm very happy there is a ferrari, they produce beautiful and exciting cars. as mentioned above, check out resale in auto motor und sport.

Poor misguided one. I know vanity is one of the 7 sins but is insecurity one of them as well?
