Drive it like you stole it?

After some opinions. My 987 is a couple of months old with nearly 3k on the clock.

During the run in I drove it very carefully with regards to rpms and letting the car and gearbox warm up.

I still take care to let the engine and gearbox warm up, so as a general question will I do the engine any harm by driving it "like I stole it"?

To clarify I don't mean excessive gear shifts and thrashing the clutch and brakes, put simply, because the car redlines at a given rpm and will do 110mph or so in 3rd (so I'm told!) am I harming the engine by driving it hard or is it a case of "you brought a Porsche so drive it like they intended it to be driven"?

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Let everything warm up, keep changes smooth as you can, and feel free (within limits of traction) to redline it on every shift should you want to! 5k+ is the best part of the rev range!

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

You've paid for 7000 revs, use them

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Be sure to warm it up thoroughly first!! Let the temp. reach working temperature and the gearbox feel smooth.
    Then redline it
Nothing better than going down into 3rd on the freeway and letting it rip all the way till the limiter

you're right...along with the awesome pull of 4th gear

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

And try not to bounce off the rev limiter because even though it isn't proof that you're damaging your drivetrain or engine, they'll still try to use it against you in a warranty repair situation. Ask me how I know.

    Tell them to feck off.

It makes no difference whatsoever. If anybody tells you different, tell them they are a w@**er.

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Yep, trust me. They've attempted to blame both of my tranny failures (two tranny failures within 20,000 miles, and no I don't drive like that!) on the fact that I bumped the rev limiter. "Even that is enough to potentially cause damage".

Right. Okay. Let's see you try to make THAT one hold up in court! I could've just been sitting there in neutral, bouncing off the limiter with no load on the drivetrain, happily ticking the computer's counts higher and higher, for starters!

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Yup I drive it like I stole it like 15mins after start up. 4k rpm to 6k rpm range is awesome...

Porsches are meant to be driven, it would be a waste to drive them like Lexus...

So true! I've been driving my car during engine running-in very, very gently. (Of course, one should ALWAYS wait till coolant temp is normal and the oil temp is around 90C). Anyway, with a nicely warmed up car, on Saturday, I thought 'let's see what it can do at 4000 rpm'. I took it up to 4000 rpm and OMG!!! Phenomenal acceleration!!

There was a BMW driver right behind me all over my tail waiting for the opportunity to overtake me. After I went to 4000rpm, he simply receded in my rear view mirror. The next time he caught up with me at the next traffic light, he just stayed behind me showing no sign at all of wanting to overtake! How very satisfying!!

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

The only rule is to make sure she's warm then you thrash the life out of it!!!! Of course I dont always drive like this, but most journeys I will redline at least one gear, usually second... When I go for a "special" drive I will redline through the gears all day long!

Thats what I bought the bloody thing for after all!!!!!

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Interesting replies I have to say I'm starting to enjoy 3rd gear.

The only problem is those pesky speed limits we have over here and that warning "ding" that I set to go off at 85mph seems to be chiming more and more.

Nah, you want to disable that!

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

I cannot compare with driving like a stole it, but with 'drive it like a rental car'...and I do NOT do that ;-)
I redline my p-car etc, but no way I abuse the clutch or gearbox...whereas on rental cars...well, uh I frequently rev them to limiter and drop clutch abruptly...all those idiots things :-)

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Well as much as I would like to be redlining my car right now...

I loved winter for many years being a snowboarder and snowmobiler but now I am torn as I am now also a Porsche owner .

Either way warm it up and let 'er rip once you've achieved optimal oil temps.

Re: Drive it like you stole it?

Nothing like the build up to a warm engine, and then letting the P-car do what it was born to.....eat the road.
