Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

The article says it looks like a Porsche and is a two seater. Hmmm... any ideas?

Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

    November 23, 2006

Koblenz, Germany - A prototype sports car worth R1.8-million has spun out of control and crashed on a speed-unlimited autobahn near here.

Police, at the request of the manufacturer, declined to identify the make of car but police photographs show that the front of the two-seater had sheared off but the streamlined hatchback rear resembled a Porsche more than it did any other well-known brand.

Manufacturers keep the road-testing of cars a close secret, sometimes disguising new models to foil reporters.

Police said the car was going too fast when it snagged a centre barrier near here on Tuesday, bounced against an articulated truck in the slow lane and spun several times.

The test driver stepped unhurt from the wreckage. Sapa-DPA

hatchback and extremely safe, the new 928(panamera) coupe.

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

Can anyone find any photo of the wreck?

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

    two seater?... interesting.

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

here is a picture of the crashed car Link to crash (click on pic to enlarge)
The German article assumes that it is a Porsche prototype. Looks like a roadster or cab.

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

The plastic engine cover reminds me of a Mercedes...

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

that's a wiesmman GT with a bmw v10 ,the one from the M5/M6, you can see it in the airbox!!!
brilliant, that's going t be some hell of car!!

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

pedro_b's right. I have found another German articlce (no pics) that says that the car was a Wiesmann prototype and the unhurt test driver is Jörg van Ommen. Link

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

Jörg van Ommen piloted a Wiesmann GT race car during this years 24 hours of the Nürburgring. Pictures can be found here Link to Wiesmann GT Racing (click on Bildergalerie at the bottom of the page)

    Hi Ron,

thanks for the link! How did you manage to find this article from one of our local websites?

R1.8 million is around 300,000 US dollars

You are good! It's going to be one hell of a car with that BMW V10! The Wiesmann looks like a cross between a Morgan and a TVR...

    You mean Gary, right .

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

    Ewi,

    nice find!

If van Ommen was the driver, I don't suspect a driver's error to be the reason for accident. Wiesmann uses components from BMW, Wolfgang Reitzle was won for the initial concepts several years ago. Since they ae a small company and development funds are naturally limited, this is only their third car to be presented.

I assume the car'd debut on next year's IAA in Frankfurt, I could further assume that they were on their way to or from the N'ring.

I believe that's what he meant, yes.

I use a Google desktop that does constant searches for news items on the topics of my choosing, Porsche being one of those topics. This was one of the first two news stories that came out about the crash.

I talked to a Wiesmann sales representative two weeks ago about the Wiesmann GT V 10. He said, the car will be launched in the near future (no exact date mentioned). He also said the price level will climb to a level so far unknown to Wiesmann The sales representative claimed to have done testrides himself with the prototype at the Solitude track near Stuttgart. According to him the BMW V 10 sounds like a F1 in the Wiesmann He also claimed that a SLR being tested at the same time at the same track wasn't able to pull away from the Wiesmann

Though being a small manufacturer only (approximately 600 cars built since the company's start 13 years ago), they have a quite good reputation regarding the cars built quality (certainly backed by the BMW engine, drivetrain, gearbox etc.) and they seem to hold their value very very well (no comparison to today's Porsches ) because there's obviously more demand than production capacities.
Here's another pic of the crashed car:

    Geez,

so we know which car will be on your list for the future!

Before getting this car I would have to practice at a secret location how to climbe in/out of the car without looking too ridiculous

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

This is definetely a BMW engine, so this is no Porsche.
Wiesmann Roadster prototype (very likely) or BMW prototype (not very likely). Porsche lovers should be more on the lookout for slightly strange looking BMW 5-series and other four door sedans.

What about the mini SUV that is suppose to come out?

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

Nice lines on the Wiesmann, the body proportions remind me a little of '38 Bugatti Atlantic.

Re: Mystery sports prototype crashes on autobahn

pearhaps this thread should be moved to sports cars !!
(since everyone agrees it's not a porsche)
