    Sunroof on 997s

Hi guys, just about to make my first Porsche purchase, not sure about the sunroof option , I have read they start to rattle after a while, what is anyones experience of this ? I presume if it did a warranty claim would be appropriate

    Thanks for any feedback

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

It's nice to have so that you can open in a tunnel to better hear the engine...The header does buffet at speed...if you want to race the car and want lightweight and stiffness then axe it, if you use car for all-purpose then definitely get it i say...

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Mine rattles. I had the dealership fix it which lasted a day, until I opened it again. It rattles whether opened or closed.

Take it back and get it fixed properly - it shouldn't rattle. Mine has been fine from day one.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Before going to dealer maybe check manual and go thru the "reteaching" procedure. Maybe this will seat the sunroof better and eliminate the rattle?

    worth a try.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

    No issues after 15K.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattle on mine and I love it. Use it often and would have it again.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattle on mine after two years. Do not really use it and not sure if I would order one agin. It its a pain when your are detailing the car. I have to tape it off so I do not get any wax/polish on the edge of it.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattle here and I use it all the time.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

    No rattle here either.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Thanks guys very helpful, great site as well, have learned so much on here from reading back through old posts

Nice to be on a car forum that covers both sides of the pond

Just come out of a BMW M3 CSL and into a 997s, it's a great place to be

I am really surprised you guys in the States can't delete the sunroof option on the GT3, God knows what Porsche are playing at putting a sunroof on track car, very very strange !

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Sunroof was standard equipment. No rattle on mine .

A mix of 50:50 distilled water and alcohol on a swab usually gets rid of any wax/polish resdue on the felt sunroof trim

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

    22k. No rattles.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Speaking of *rAtTlEs aNd nOiSe* I removed the little "aileron" that pops on my M3's sun roof, the car's muuuuuch quieter with sunroof open. Easy to solve the "mega bass" vibration by cracking rear window (on M3) a bit.

Thinking of doing this on 997S. At the moment, to make it quieter, to hold the flap down I just jamb a little block of wood ( 1/2 inch x 1 inch by 2 inches) with a red piece of yarn dangling to remind me it is there. You have to fiddle with the passenger window a bit, not as convienient as M3's openable rear windows.

Try it yourself, hold the "aileron" down at speeds; muuuuuch quieter.

They traded "mega bass" buffeting noise at certain speeds for annoying constant white noise by adding that pop up flap.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

26'000km, no rattles, use it all the time except on highway/long distances.
Usually I press the sport button and open the sunroof at the same time

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattles here either... Love my sunroof.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

    42000 km Rattles a lot
    visited porsche several times.
    Result: rattles again.
They said there is nothing to do anymore.
Imagine been there 5 times for this rattle

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattles after 5600 miles. The system works quite well.

By the way, I don't think U.S. buyers can get the 911 without the sunroof. I asked when I placed my order last year.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

I know you don't get the choice in the US but we do in Europe, not sure whether to spec it, it's not like we get much sunshine in the UK anyway.May save the money and spend it on a more useful option

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

No rattles on mine after one year and 16000 kms.
At speeds (above 100kmh) it's very noisy when opened, however to soften the turbulences, open one of the side windows slightly.
It's nice in town on a sunny (or not) day.
I know it adds weight in the wrong place but the added benefit outweights the loss of "performance" IMO.
It's a compromise but on anything else than a GT2 or GT3, I would recommende it.
    Helps in resale value too.

Are you sure? I don't have a sunroof on my 997S.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

I think there was a sunroof delete option.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

8k and only rattles if open and driving over some serious bumps, which for me, a rattle'n'squeak freak, is not an issue.

My 996 Targa roof mechansim started rattling and squeaking adfter about 8k, and it required lubrication twice a season.

I know that many feel a sunroof adds resale value, but I for one, were I in the market for a used 911, would appreciate one without a sunroof. In fact, I had planned to get a 997S with sunroof delete and -20 mm sport suspension, but I couldn't wait any longer . . .

One last thing about the sunroof: '05's have a significant shudder that goes away if one of the side windows is opened up a crack. A minor redesign on the 06's has virtually eliminated this.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Just trying to help here with a suggestion for solving difficult problems, as futile as it seems, it's not always the case.

Take some time (and a strong directional lighting source) and carefully examine what you can see when the sunroof is open. Spend time (not just a cursory glances) until what you can actually see makes sense to you (how it works, what's going on etc.). IOW, loosely speaking, just look at and study the mechanism for a half hour insted of five minutes.

My point is you MAY actually find a loose screw, or two sections of metal in contact, or a missing part (not like the other side) or some other thing which you can fix yourself.

No kidding, I can't tell you how many times in my amateur mechanic career I solved seemingly intractable problems this way: just turn up the attention knob full blast and focus like a maniac on what you can see and feel.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Mine used to rattle when I hit a bump. Had the dealer take care of it and now it's fine - no more noise! They had to remove it from its railing and retighten everything.

I've had a sunroof on my cars since 1976 and I wouldn't have a car without one. While it rains just as much here in the Pacific Northwest as in jolly old England, the ability to crack it open a touch greatly improves ventalation. Rolling down the side windows lets in to much traffic noise to be comfortable.

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Sunroof is standard here downunder on all 911 models.. so we "don't" really have a choice. Love it and use it 99% of the time.

    WHAT!?!?!?

Absolutely no sunroof delete option on the 997 in North America. There was a sunroof delete option on the 996, BUT NOT THE 997.

    How can this be?

    Re: Sunroof on 997s

Porsche decided not to crash test a 997 without a sunroof, which would be required in order to export the car to the U.S. market. You can't even get a GT3 without the sunroof. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
