MY03/04 Boxster Sport Exhaust Sound Files (INSIDE)

Just found these files floating around the net, planning to get this upgrade with the full wiring and switch... wondering about the cost...

the sound files are the all on a 2003 Boxster S

I LOOOVE IT! - gets you the 911/ferrari sport exhuast BARK without sounding at all ricey!

if the price is below 3k i will be getting it at my 15k service (about a month from now)

Who does the sport exhaust?
Porsche does not offer a sport exhaust on the Boxster. It did on the MK1 and it had a weird but not ugly styling, but to my knowledge, there is none for the MK2.

sorry fanch but your wrong on this one (believe me ive been going at this subject with my dealer for the past 2 months)

btw the sound files are from the same car as in the pics, since the 03SE is revised, you cant really tell the difference by looking at a car without getting under it as you could with the MK1 boxsters (which i agree w/ you was really ugly and strange).

here is evidence:

the bypass pipes are tucked in differently, the manufatuerer for the SE is the same as for the MK1 exhuast

as you can see, the bypass pipes are now tucked under the pipe that goes from the catalytic converter to the muffler

here is a pic of the old SE for reference:

getting this installed on my car next month along with 15k service

hope this clears things up with all the 03 and onward Boxster owners...

oh , and for the record:

that was a pic that was floating around the net awhile that people thought was the new SE, but in fact ( i later found out after investigation ) - that is by a speclist (with a bad reputation mind you) who specially modifies 02 SEs to fit 03s, hence the tucked in lateral bypass pipes

Moogle, I am glad my pics ands sound files have been of some service

There were so many people asking about what the new Sport Exhaust looks like and sounds like that I decided to take some time, get the car on a life and snap some shots. Then when people asked about the sound, well there you have it

I will say one thing, people always complained about the previous Boxster sport exhaust not being loud and being weak. When you are outside the car it sounds amazing. There is another Boxster S with the GHL in my garage and random people in my building have come up to me and told me mine sounds much louder and more agressive. I still don't know if I believe that but I am definitly satisfied! The one thing though, before you plunk down 2K for the exhaust (suncoast now has them I saw), is that I still have a hard time hearing it while I am driving because of the engine roar in the 2004. Maybe, and most likely, it is because it came stock and I have never really turned the exhaust off for more than a few seconds so I am used to it. I can tell a difference at low speeds though. I do know when I was at an autocross two weeks ago I got a lot of compliments on it and quite a few 2003 Boxster S owners said their cars no longer felt mean after hearing mine! All in all I really do highly suggest it, the sound difference is amazing.

hey a4,

love all the wonderful pics/sounds of yours

my question:

can you please clarify clearly what the 'full electronic switch mumbo jumbo' install actually does?

and if i did go for the "FULL INSTALL w/ electronics" - would it be identical in functionality and automation as if i had got it from the factory in option XLF?

edit: oh i just looked at suncoast's website and they have updated it thx for the info - interestingly enough, their website shows the 996 exhuast pic, so they just copied the (incorrect) information from the porsche tequipment site

- they should use your photos !!!

The exhaust on the picture seems to be an original Porsche MK2 exhaust modified by the german exhaust manufacturer Eisenmann.

i have to disagree with you too RC

i insist that there is a OEM sport exhuast for the MK2 boxster and the one in the pictures in my first thread is this.

more evidence: option XLF (Sport exhuast) is still availible as an option, and i have personally seen it from the factory AND aftermarket OEM.

come on A4ep, you got my back or what ?

RC, You are VERY VERY Wise and I am always impressed with your knowledge of Porsche but you are absolutly mistaken with this one.

Porsche DOES offer a FACTORY SPORT EXHAUST SYSTEM for the 2003/2004 Boxster Model!!! The pics that have been attached are of my car on a lift, this exhaust system was an option from the factory and the proof of that is in my attached window sticker and trunk sticker. As I am sure you know the PSE is option code XLF. It is also under the "Exclusive Options" part of the window sticker.

The original Boxster PSE (with exposed bypass pipes)was made by Eisenmann and the new and improved 2003/2004 PSE is still made by the same outside company Eisenmann but it is a totally redesigned system as you can see by the new placment and size of the bypass pipes in the pics above.

I hope this is enough PROOF for you

Moogle, Check the following link to my pathetic attempt at a webpage for the PSE. It has about 5 new sound files that might be of interest to you:

As for the functionality I can only assume it is like the 996 PSE system since the electronics are exactly the same. This means that when it comes from the factory you have a switch to turn the PSE Off, but it is ON by default when you start the car. From the factory it cuts out between 25-45MPH (approximate) so I used the 996 switch hack and pulled the 4 prong jumper from relay #23, and this eliminated the cut-out. I would assume that if you did not want to deal with the hassle of the switch (I would reccomend you don't install it..as you can see from my new sound files the PSE is pretty quiet in the cabin) and just installed the muffler then the valves would default to open like on the 996 PSE.

ive already made a reservation to get it w/ my dealer at my upcoming 15k service in a couple of weeks. (w/ full wiring mind you - as i like to go for the whole OEM feel - if you gonna do something do it right i say

Moogle, Glad to hear you are going through with it. Please let me know how you like it. I will tell you the truth I was dissapointed with it at first because I was hoping for a 996 sport exhaust sound, I have quite a bit of experience with that one so the sound was totally different and I was not happy. Now though, the more miles I get on it the better it sounds, it really is like night and day the difference between now and a month ago when I got the car with 60 miles on it. I think part of it is that I removed the jumper that automatically cut the exhaust off at city speeds, now I hear it all the time and it is great. Make sure they do not install the four pin jumper/speedometer detection line that is included with the kit. I really think you will like it, it's how the car should sound!
