Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

    This would be awesome!

F1 or Formula e. What a choice. Hard to take them seriously.

Smiley Why? In two decades, tops...the F1 in it's current form will be dead and the Formula E will offer an alternative. Or maybe it will be called Formula 1 E. Smiley

We all know that the time of gasoline operated cars is over, it is just a matter of when. No matter if it takes 10 years or 20 years or even 30 years, gasoline engines are done. For good. Hybrids will only be an intermediary solution for the next 20 years or so but then...bye bye gasoline operated engines.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any car right now, unless I plan to keep it like forever. I would not buy an ELV or even a hybrid because in five years tops, the tech could be completely obsolete.

Well with an ELV you might just swap the battery pack and maybe the charging hardware, the tech is not in the electric engines... And for infotainment just swap the central unit and maybe screen, something Porsche has refused to offer in the past for modern cars.

Upgradeable tech will (very likely) never happen with major car manufactures because of certification and safety/liability reasons. Also, they want to sell you new products, not make it possible for you to upgrade (and keep) your old one. Smiley

The tech is not in the electric "engines", right but it evolves constantly and gets outdated fast until a certain status quo in tech vs. cost/ease of production is reached, where new developments every couple of months don't make sense anymore.

Tesla batteries can be swapped in 2 minutes... They offer over the air software updates and might have done hardware retrofit in the past... Other breakthroughs from Musk shaking the auto industry while Porsche refused to offer Bluetooth retrofit in a $150k 2 year old car...

These retrofits could put Tesla in trouble in certain markets where every little change needs a proper certification for liability issues. I am surprised Tesla doesn't see a problem here, especially when we are talking driving/operating safety.

I cannot even retrofit Apple CarPlay in my R8 (available one model year later) because the wiring isn't compatible. In this case not a certification but a (technical) design issue. Car manufacturers make money with new cars, not with retrofits.

I commend McLaren for offering a power upgrade to their 12C after a year or so, this was the most amazing thing I ever experienced from a car manufacturer.

Re: Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

Audi is already entering Formula E, much much cheaper than anything else.

F1 is on hybrid engines, not much different than WEC engines, so not hard to do.

But the F1 engines are under less stress than a endurance engine, not sure if Porsche can really gain much engineering wise.

This is just a backup plan Porsche is considering, if no one else enter LMP1 and that class dies as the LMP2 cars are much cheaper to run and quite competitive speed wise.

McLaren partnering up again with Porsche as engine provider after all these years would be amazing. Would even get me watching F1 again angry

God! I'm praying that this doesn't happen.

Re: Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

why not? if they are pulling out of LMP1

Re: Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

It's not clear or confirmed that they are pulling out of LMP1.

Re: Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

Here are 3 main reasons that I don’t want to see Porsche leave LMP1 and go to F1

    1. Porsche’s home is in sportscar racing: It gained fame & fortune in this discipline. Porsche is to sportscar racing what Ferrari is to F1. (listen to Andre Lotterer)
    2. Porsche has invested heavily in building up what can be considered the best all round team in the business. On and off track. It would be a crying shame to lose this all to make a couple of bucks selling engines that may or may not be successful.
    3. From a purely technological point of view, the LMP1 cars are more advanced than the F1 cars. In other words; Endurance racing is a far better lab for technology than F1 (Less regulated and far more stressful)

Re: Porsche weighing up Formula 1 option

Actually, I'm not sure what Porsche would gain from F1 racing. Seriously.

While I would agree with you regarding Porsche and endurance racing, none of that applies if they are the only ones left participating in LMP1 next year, which is a possibility, and in that case they are considering other options, at least this is what I understood the article to say. I'd rather LMP1 class gets new comers and continues and Porsche sticks to that rather than going into F1 "instead" but if LMP1 stops being commerical is rather they go into F1 than Formula E ir nothing at all.

I doubt that they will be the only one's in LMP1 ...if they stay.
