    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

well, if you are happy for LMP1, then congrats, but remember Gt series while RSR lost the battle. I think the big winner this year  is Aston and I can't get the F$%&#% out of last pit stops for RSR ( changing tires???) ,If anybody can collaborate I would appreciate.I think porsche has to rethink its strategy if they think of winning next year. It was the only Lemans I was up almost 17 hours of it tho.

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

The RSR had to come in for gas....and in doing so, got passed by the Ford GT for third. They had nothing to lose, and possibly a  lot to gain by going to new rubber. I seem to remember them doing this two years ago, too.

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

It wasn't new tires, they already did 18 round of changing tires,so???

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

I heard tyre puncture for the RSR in the last laps.

With an admirable debut at the Le Mans 24 Hours witnessed by 258,000 fans, the new Porsche 911 RSR demonstrated its potential and reliability. The race car led the field over long distances and was on course for a podium result until shortly before the flag. However, after 340 laps full of thrills and drama on the legendary 13.629-kilometre Circuit des 24 Heures, Richard Lietz (Austria) and his French teammates Frédéric Makowiecki and Patrick Pilet had to settle for fourth place in the fiercely cutthroat GTE-Pro class. An additional pit stop due to tyre damage an hour before the finish robbed them of all hopes in achieving a podium spot at the toughest automobile race in the world.

Well, Audi left LeMans, so Porsche had a fair chance. _abhauen.gif

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

Interesting article, but I think Toyota will be back next year.  Just too much pride and dollars invested.  Also, Porsche and Toyota can put immense pressure on WEC to adjust regulations to improve durability without sacrificing speed.

As an aside, I have never really understood why Toyota has invested so much in LeMans.  Toyota is not a sports car company, so that the notion that racing technology transferring to street cars seems a stretch. Racing is built into Porsche's ethos and sports cars, so connectiion makes sense.

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

With the 3 wins, I'm not sure Porsche will remain in WEC LMP1 class.  One has to wonder with the launch of Mission E  in 2020, whether Formula E is a more interesting program for them. It is definitely time for a reset on LMP1 Hybrid technology specs.

Toyota's interest may be the result of Akio Toyoda's personal interest in racing.

Another question is why don't manufacturers like Ferrari,  McLaren, Jaguar, Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, etc. enter LMP1?

Thanks for clarification, but still I think strategy should have been changed, if Im not mistaken, Aston had 2 less pit stops  than porsche, they also came with whole new car like porsche. Nevertheless, it was a very interesting race this year.

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

Well, if either Porsche or Toyota leaves LPM1 it is not really going to be a race...These hybrids are fantastic from a technology point of view but money limits too much the number of competitors.

Would be nice to have more cars in LMP1, V4 hybrids, V12 petrol, V8 diesels etc... One can dream smiley

I look forward to the development of run flat racing slicks so the cars won't destroy themselves on the way to the pits.  It might even help accelerate development for road cars too.

Didn't an RSR have to pit in the last hour at Sebring b/c of a flat tire too?

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

A bit late as I was celebrating and partying with Porsche and then travelling.

    A few points.

919 #2's victory is a result of the whole team, not just drivers but the mechanics. The front end swap was supposed to be a 2+ hour job, they did it in half the time, fantastic effort.

The #8 Toyota suffered basically the same problem, but the Toyota crew took longer, or more like the standard time to fix the car. They were not prepared in simple words.

#7 Toyota had a clutch problem, nothing to do with the hybrid system.

#9 Toyota had a blow tire that caused irreparable damage, also not the fault of the hybrid system.

#1 Porsche had a ICU problem, aka gasoline engine, so not about the hybrid system either.

In the end, the extreme heat had caused some problems with the hybrid race cars, but really they are fine for the last what, 4 years?

Brendon's charge up the field was epic, Timo continued that. But they never gave up, it's a 24 hour race and they gave everything even after losing more than an hour. This is called racing, one never ever give up.

Hurley Haywood called the result way before the start. I had a chat with him Friday afternoon during the parade and he said plainly that the Toyota drivers were driving their cars too hard, they will break. And they did.

I also had a chat with Walliser while the race was going on, I mentioned what Hurley said and he said they cannot bank on competition falling out, they had to do their best and mind their own race, the repairs on the #2 car proved their point.

I was on hand for the last 3 victories, they all have very different feel. For 2015, there was no doubt Porsche was gonna win. For 2016, there was no doubt that Porsche wasn't going to win but surprisingly they did. For 2017, there was no doubt that it will go down the wire and it did.

    On to the RSRs.

Both had driver errors. #92 hit the curb at Porsche Curves a bit too hard for the last time and took a weird hop and crashed out. #91 was driven way too hard to stay competitive and the tires gone and then had untimely puncture to add salt to the injury.

Overall I think the RSR are quite competitive, they came alive during the night. The torque deficit to the turbo-ed competition wasn't that bad. But they definitely sounded the best. If only ALL the cars at Le Mans sounded that good!

+1 on the sound. Amazingly loud and as someone mentioned, the sound completely ruled any other car out there.

The only thing louder was the LMP2 cars, but they just sounded awful, even when they are the loudest.

As I was in the Porsche Experience Centre, I can hear them downshifting rapidly before the kink and then accelerate out onto the pit straight, the RSR drowns out every other car except the LMP2s and they can be heard till the end of the pit straight! What a glorious sound!

yes, thats what Im mad at porsche strategy towards RSRs, They could win it but didn't happened.

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

The LMP2's were noisy but as you say, it was more a popping and cracking under braking. During acceleration I preferred the RSR  Smiley

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

They just fined Vincent Capillaire 1000€ blaming him for the Toyota blowing its clutch, ridiculous.

So when the Toyota #7 is at the pits with a red light stopped, the driver of LMP2 Vincent Capillaire who was in the pit box next to were he was stopped runs next to the car and gives the driver a thumbs up in support for him (#7) leading the race and runs back, and the Toyota driver think he is a track official telling him its OK to go in spite of the red light, but then has to stop again as he is flag to stop as its not green, so the #7 stops again and when its OK to go he starts the car and the clutch fails, allegedly by Toyota because the clutch cannot take two starts in a row like that with the petrol engine running (brilliant engineering Toyota, and very smart Kobayashi), and they blame it all on the driver Vincent Capillaire for confusing their driver and they lost the race because of him and filed a protest which ended in the driver Vincent Capillaire getting fined 1000€...

    Brilliant engineering Toyota mail

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

So if not for this the Toyota would not have had to use the clutch later on?

ok it is a shame what is happening to them but this is ridiculous.

The Porsche mechanics who fixed #2 won the race, they deserve a nice bonus :)

    Re: 24h Le Means 2017

In addition to what Nick posted about the #2, I believe Fritz Enzinger said the issue with the electric motor on the #2 was a problem they had never seen before in any test.

Toyota didn't anticipate a clutch will be needed 2 times in a row within a short time frame, so they designed theirs to last one launch and figured they had time to have it cool down again.

Porsche had a more robust design, experience from endurance racing Smiley

But you know the Toyota clutch will last at least 2 launches next year, just like their turbo host clamp lasted more than 24hours this year Smiley
