Not so sure disassembling the gauges of a 997 is all that easy though.
I've not actually painted the needles. Very sorry to misguide people if I did.
I DID IN FACT remove the guage cluster from my Boxster to paint the dash trim NO PROBLEM. By following a 996 DIY hack, the whole instrument cluster was out of the car and on my workbench in about ten minutes. I didn't check it out much more carefully, but I'm sure there was an EASY way to get the acyrlic guage lens material off and get access to the guage faces to mask and then paint the needles.
Everything in our cars is designed to come apart and be modular and snap back togeather (even screws are getting more and more rare). So I KNOW the 997 guage cluster comes out easily and I BET you can continue just as easily to get access to the needles and the guage faces so you can do some serious, precision, delicate, surgical masking so you can spray those needles if you want.
Here's another clue. Suncoast Autosports will SELL you colored guage faces, so installing them probably doesn't require a PhD, or training from Porsche with special tools.
Personally, I myself, would STOP before actually removing the needles. I would NEVER remove the needles, just slip some masking material behind them.
Gotta find a DIY hack for instrument cluster removal before doing anything though. (try Renntech) DO NOT try to figure out how to do it without instructions. It's a baaaaad puzzle to try to solve knowing nothing.
