    GT3 is coming

Rumors indicate spring 2003, 380 HP, 3.6 l engine, available worldwide.
In Germany, some dealers already take fixed orders.

    Re: GT3 is coming

Very glad to hear this. I have an '02 Turbo which I love, and use on the track a fair amount. It is very competent and fast, but is heavy and not as agile as I would like. I also like the flexibility of a normally aspirated engine. I wonder if you have any more info on the GT3?:
    - available in Canada/US right away (upon launch in '03)?
    - is engine block based on GT1 (as with Turbo)?
    - curb weight?
    - base price?
    - available in Clubsport version right away?

    TIA

    Re: GT3 is coming

Steve, I would lie if I'd say I have 100% accurate information but I try my best:
launch is rumored to be in spring 2003, first cars should make it to the US/Canada market around summer/autumn 2003.
Yes, the engine block is based on the GT1. It is actually a completely overworked "old" GT3 engine block with various enhancements. Power is rumored to be 380 HP.
The weight of the new GT3 is rumored to be around 30-50 kg over the weight of the "old" one. Actually not very good news.
Yes, the GT3 will be available as a Clubsport version right away but as far as I understood, the only difference will be the roll cage and some minor track adaptations. No single mass flywheel as far as I heard but this info can be wrong.
No sequential shifting system as some rumors indicated but a highly improved gearbox with an oil cooler.

I hope this helps. As soon as we have more precise information, we'll post it.

A little hint: if you want to get a GT3, you have to put yourself on a list somewhere as soon as possible. In Germany, some dealers already have substantial order figures and I'm sure the waiting list in the US/Canada won't stand behind.

    Re: GT3 is coming

I'm having the very same "problem": love my 996 TT, use it as a daily-driver and spend some
time on the track (12 days already this year, and at least 4 more scheduled). However, the new GT3 is
kinda growing on me... The only thing is that I think I would miss the impressive power/torque of the Turbo,
and I doubt that the GT3 is the ideal daily-driver during the winter season here in Switzerland...

Huh... Keeping the Turbo *and* ordering a GT3 isn't really an option... Or should I order one for next year, and sell the Turbo when
the GT3 comes?... aaargh! Life's hard!...

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

    How about...

...keeping your Turbo as a daily driver and buying a used "old" GT3 for track racing. As soon as the new GT3 shows up, a bunch of "old" GT3 will be available on the used car market over here in Europe.

    Re: How about...

Yeah, that's an idea... If the new one gets delivered in spring, I probably could
get an "old" one just in time for next season. But finding a used GT3 with little
track-time and good/clean records might look like MI:3, don't you think?

    Greetings,
    --Pierre

    Used GT3

Might be easier to find a GT3 in a good shape over here in Germany. I'm not sure all GT3 have been track raced but one has to be careful, you're right. There are a lot of "crappy" GT3s out there.
The advantage of the GT3: there are several GT3 racing teams in Germany which know the GT3 very well. Parts are widely available too, even from Porsche Motorsport.

    Rare but ...

It is rare that I see a crashed GT3 at the track but it I did get to see one towed off of Nürburgring on Saturday. Basically, they are such stable track platforms that you really have to make a mistake to crash one. This is especially true of the owner is using "R" tyres. Not so true of some of the earlier 911's though.

My personal dream is to find a GT3R, maybe one of the current Cup cars, and modify it just enough to make it street legal. Then use it for track days (certainly wouldn't be much good at carrying grocery bags). My guess is that a used Cup car could soon be very cheap and with that you would already have all of the modifications that people usually make for the track (only done right).

    S.

I guess it would be easier to...

...get a GT3 and modify it to a streetlegal GT3R.

I saw one a while ago at a german racing team over here in Germany. It was a private car owned by a guy from cologne.
He put a lot of money into this car, engine output was about 400 HP, streetlegal. Officially. Actually this car had already around 440 HP but not everything was really streetlegal. Unofficially.

But again: a lot of money was put in this car, I really don't know if it is worth it.
Just for fun? Well, why not. But imagine crashing so much money on the track.

I guess I stick with my Turbo: lots of power, lots of safety (4WD and PSM) and lots of I don't know what.
