About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

Friends. anyone has any experience with an 1995 Ford Escort LX?

I have a change to buy a completely mint, one owner and totally stock one for next to nothing with only 94k kms.
I am considering, but know very little about these little cars. I'd only want to buy if it's a super reliable car that people who had them have fond memories with... so anyone?

enjoy the trip down memory lane im sure Smiley

Never owned one but do know that Ford does not like to support most of their older models. Have you asked a Ford dealer if you can still get small electrical parts for it?  Don't get a bad surprise or have.to scrounge in junkyards for some unobtanium relay or ignition switch part.

Re: About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

Yea i will call my dealer tomorrow, that's a good suggestion. From my quick search, there are lots of parts found at wreckers and online etc.. that's either a good sign (as many were sold) or a bad one (if many broke) lol

Even with low miles on the car, it is still a 21 year old Ford economy car. I have owned a lot of Fords and did put 452k miles on a duratec four cylinder before I sold that car. However, in my opinion it is not the miles but the age that would put me off.

Re: About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

I don't get it. You have a 535i right? Why would you buy this? It isn't something special like an E30 or something. I see no reason to buy it and end up costing you heaps on up keep?

These were very common sight here… around 15 years ago. Cheap and easy to maintain car, so good buy on the second hand market. Since then, all of them are gone due to rust.

Don’t see any sense in buying one, btw…

This is why I bought it. Will be my last Ford though because of the crappy dealerships here. Smiley Right now, an independent mechanic is taking care of my car, something I actually hate and never do but this guy is the Shelby guru in Germany and he basically knows everything about this car, the good and the bad. The Ford dealer I bought this car at sucked big time and I could say some really bad things about him but he probably would sue, so I better shut up. Already had my altercations with him and his sister, no thanks. The type of people who think that if something went wrong for years and others accepted it, it is OK for me as well. Smiley I am happy I don't have to see their faces again and I really never had serious issues with any of my cars or dealerships or the mechanics/owners. Btw: I'm not the only one having this experience but like I said, this guy is very fast in suing people because he knows that it is difficult to prove what he does/did.

No, I guess Ford isn't exactly "my" brand. I had very good experiences with BMW/Mini and Mercedes, less good with Audi though.

Re: About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

Well RC for what it's worth I've had "bad" experience with my Skoda dealer, although not as hostile as the relationship you suffered with your Ford dealer. They were pleased to take the money to sell me the  car but the after sales service has been shocking, don't think I've experienced service this bad for many many years. A real shame as the car itself was pretty good, but as the mileage totalled up and a problems started so did my dissatisfaction. Smiley

You will be pleased to know that I've now parted with the Skoda and now own a real "old mans" car for my DD...Smiley

Re: About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

    Ha ha ha!!!

BTW - is this "sue" mentality a German thing? Surely if you've had a bad experience & document it factually, there isn't a thing they can do?

I wasn't exactly quiet in my dealings with Porsche GB and only escalating to the ombudsman secured a resolution (or the actual engagement of the DP) but I'd never even considered I'd be sued for voicing my experiences?

Back to topic - if you've dry space to store this car and it gives you a buzz, why not go for it!

Those are nice! Yeah well this thing would replace my 2003 corolla, in itself not a much worse car. It's just cute and mint. That said, I will not go for it. The best advice = re: age. There's not much else against it as much as the age. Also a '95 Ford is probably way way worse in terms of quality than an 80s BMW or Benz.. Actually, both will probably cost you Smiley Oh and my 535i im selling right now because it's time to let go (before the imminent bigger cost factors will spoil the fun for me)

The only new Ford I would consider is the Focus RS, but it's just a tad too much bling IMO.. At 29 I feel too old by about 9 years to drive this around and still be taken seriously...

Oh, so the 535i is going and you will need a new car soon? This will be fun. RT, start giving suggestions! How about a Volvo 850R wagon. See Dreamcar, I'm not against Volvo at all! 😁

Re: About to buy a '95 Ford Escort LX

With that Volvo suggestion, I am contemplating 'unfriending' WAY now.

Aaron get what you can and bail out of those older Kraut boxes before Bosch owns all of your future earnings. Consider Honda or toyota, parts r cheap and you could learn to work on it yourself.

What mutton-head took this excellent thread off topic by talking about Volvo's? Smiley At least the Volvo V40 is based on the latest Ford Focus underpinnings so not entirely off topic....Smiley

I had several proper RS Fords in my younger days, an Escort Mexico Mk.2 and followed by a RS 2000, then in 1986 a Sierra Cosworth (the original one with the whale-tail spoiler, bling before the word was invented). In between the Escorts and the Sierra I had a Capri 2.8 injection that deserved the RS moniker more than some that had it. All fantastic drivers cars of their age. The modern RS Fords just don't do it for me, maybe because I'm an old fart now (hence the Volvo)....Smiley
