I don't know the details, but I'm fairly sure the answer is "Yes", unfortunately. I know the transmissions are very different (GT3 has a German built Getrag LSD box and 997S has Japanese unit - not so sure that they are interchangeable - same with motors. You may need the 997TT gearbox and AWD setup). Also, you will need totally different engine management computers, etc.
Also, I assume you realize that a 997 GT3 crate motor alone is around $50k before labor and additional parts...

Porsche 997 GT4?
That's a very good question... when will Porsche announce the 997 GT4? 
The GT3 engine is awesome and really seems to have some of the character of the old Porsche engines. While the 997 GT3 is clearly a fantastic sports car, I believe that 4wd and 2+2 seating would considerably broaden the potential customer base...

Yes! Although the coupe lines of the 911 look better still; but the GT3 spoiler does just that to the lines.
I wonder what hideous appendage such a Cayman would end up with.

I have been seriously considering asking Ruf to do exactly this for me.
The balance of the Cayman or Boxster with a GT3 engine trans combo would be extraordinary.
