    997 TT PDK Update

Gentlemen: I have received the call from our dealer that my allocation has come up for a May or June delivery of my 997 TT, and that I needed to come in to spec the car. I think I made a mistake by staying with the 6 speed in my early communication. I am now pursuaded that, at least a Tiptronic S is the way to go and before I call the dealer to pass this information along and be moved to the bottom of the list, I wanted to check in on the "dream PDK" transmission. Should I wait for the PDK, or go with the Tip S, and more importantly, and respectfully, what's the latest on the date for availability of the PDK? Thanks very much. blawson (new member)

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

6sd. life is short the sooner you jump in the more fun your gonna be having...imo

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

    manual,you will love it!

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Why do you think you made a mistake? I strongly recommend 6 speed manual unless you have a major reason not to,(too much traffic, wife wants to drives it...).
I would never buy a tiptronic/PDK TT especially with the way my manual drives and performs now after the stage 1 tuning.
    Good luck anyway.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Get the manual, just for the simple reason than if you plan to sell it... there will always be a market for manual cars, but once PDK does come out... Tip is dead.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

    I CHOISE MANUAL!!

Personally, I enjoy driving manual transmission cars even without the aid of mood-enhancing drugs.

Well, it's not bad without but it's a whole different world with it

Grant, I value your opinion and shall try it sometime.

I guess the other side of this story is that auto transmissions could be a good substitute for chemical sedatives?

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Another vote for manual from me. There's no guarantee that the PDK will be coming out anytime soon.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Welcome to the board. I have a friend that likes to wait and never buys anything and we always give him a bad time.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

The Tip may be faster on acceleration, but I'm not convinced it's better in any other respect. I elected to go with a manny tranny linked to a LSD.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

For the manual lovers I think the clutch has as much to do with driving pleasure as does the gear selector. I doubt PDK will be as enjoyable as a six speed.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

    Manual, please.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

I also believe that if you want to moify your car after some time you should have manual Gearbox...

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Get the 6 speed. It's such a great feeling to row through the gears.

Not ttrue. The Tiptronic will get modded just as well. The only gearbox which won't allow for it will be the PDK, unless of course they install the one from the Veyron .

I say go for the manual no matter if the wife wants to drive or not. My wife can drive a manual. It's not rocket science to drive a manual. Besides to me I just can't get with an automatic sports car. Kinda takes away the fun.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

I wonder if the PDK system will have the LSD option available too! That would be a dealbreaker for me if I were in the market for one.

For now, manual with LSD for me.

Personally, I'd never let my spouse drive my sports car, unless I were too drunk to get home .

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

Manuel with Sport Shifter and LSD for me!

I think the manuels have it!

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

I'm in exactly the same situation with deciding manual vs. Tip vs. (possibly) PDK, actually had to pass on an allocation for now until I decide what to do. I totally understand the fun aspect of driving a manual, but to be honest my proficiency could use some improvement. No doubt I would be faster with the Tip on track. All my friends swear by manuals but these are the same people who don't rev match/heel-and-toe and stay in the wrong gear b/c they're too lazy to shift!

No reason for despair. We live and we learn, so get a manual and learn how to efficiently handle it, unless of course you are as lazy as your friends or are very tall.

    Re: 997 TT PDK Update

I had a good drive again in the TT automatic yesterday .... I guess it is good if one does not want to change gears, or only drives citys and highways, or is too lazy, or does not know how to drive manual (but then, a TT would be the wrong car anyway), but otherwise , manual will be more fun and revarding. I just can't be happy driving with the automatic, even if in theory it is faster. The car becomes far too much GTisch..

    1. how many of you have already driven a 997 Turbo equipped with Tip?

    2. the Tiptronic sustains more torque than the manual gearbox, so your "mod" claim isn't quite right

OK, I haven't actually driven a 997TT Tip, but I did get a ride around Putnam Park race track for several laps in one.

The owner is an accomplished long-time SCCA racer with numerous long-standing lap records and trips to the national runoffs in his resume. As he drove around the track (showing me a better line), he commented that the Tip drove "just like a 6-speed" with a different type of shift lever. It didn't slow him down in mid-corner at all and seemed to help power out of the exits.

He said that he had driven (and never liked) older versions of Porsche Tiptronic transmissions and that they were "nothing like" his new one in the 997TT. He seemed to enjoy it immensely.

He is also not the kind of guy that would talk up a new purchase if he didn't really like it. One doesn't win lots of races over the years through self-deception.

Bench racing is all BS when the green flag drops.

I asked today my Porsche dealer because i am thinking to buy too a 997tt and you are right RC. Tip is better than the manual for modding...

I will buy a manaul 997tt though if the new GT2 will be Manual only and not PDK, for the reason that i can sell much easier in 2 years time a turbo than a GT2
