    done with circle k

i'm sure you've watched helplessly as service stations have deteriorated into convenience? stores and worse. me to. last time i needed to top off the air in a car tire the handwritten sign said " out of order " for the Nth time , no [beep] , there was no filler valve....i said to myself no more....here was my solution in the for what it's worth dept.

I had a 60c.f. gas cylinder and valving....so got it re-certified ( you need to do this every 5 years )...and had it filled with nitrogen, 12 bucks....bought 50' of hose and quik disconnects at lowes, 40 bucks....and lastly a filling device from griot's garage, that has the capacity to both fill and bleed tires to a desired pressure, 50 bucks....

so now circle k and the like have definitely seen the last of my butt and 4 vehicles for this activity.....i bled the tires in the tt and my wifes sc430 to 10lbs.as to not lose the bead seal, filled them with nitrogen, then repeated the process. this used up the 60c.f. cylinder so i got it re-filled. and now have the perfect, for me, way of quickly and easily keeping expensive tires to the correct pressure

i'm not gonna miss the convenience store weasels and their customers a bit.

    Re: done with circle k

Very cool. But why nitrogen (pls forgive me if this is a stupid question)??

    Re: done with circle k

i'm no chemist but apparently nitrogen has a larger molecule than co2 and looses less pressure over time. nascar and other race venues also use nitrogen in their tires. awhile back there was a nitogen topic on one of the forums that discussed the benefits in more detail.

    Re: done with circle k

A great advantage N has is that it is dry. Humid air makes for larger temp dependent pressure variations.

This was a great idea! Congrats! Did you empty your tires prior to filling with N? Is there any harm (to the sidewalls) letting the air out prior to filling with N?

    Re: done with circle k

Nice set up! However, if use use helium, it will make your car lighter and you will really be able to "fly!"

    Just kidding!

    Re: done with circle k

thanks, actually i bled them to 10psi as to not loose the bead seal, filled them , then repeated the process. with the psi at 10 the tt tires actually had almost the same sidewall rigidity as the lexus run flats. when done the pressure sensors acted like nothing had happened, thank goodness

    Re: done with circle k

Tire pressure doesn't change as tire temps come in as compared with normal air filled tires. Most advantage is on the track where the tires are filled cold and reach optimum temp after driving a while.

Somewhat of an elegant solution to a simple problem. I'm curious couldn't you just use the air compressor in the flat tire kit? Or better yet, and for few dollars less, I bought a small Sears compressor that I now use to check my tires before I hit the road. I also use the nozzle attachment to blow crud out of the engine compartment and bugs, etc. out of the radiators.

In any event there's no need anymore for a fistful of quarters to run the air pump at the Circle K.

    Re: done with circle k

Why do you need a compressor to check your tyres pressures if the 997TT has tyre pressure sensors?

Larry doesn't have his 997TT yet. He uses the compressor with his "other" cars. I'm sure he'll use the 997TT TPMS system when he gets the car.

    Re: done with circle k

I'm currently checking my tires with a guage. When I get the turbo I suppose the TPMS will preclude the need for a guage. However, you still need a pressurized air source if you need to add air, and it's been my experience that tires do lose air over time. Pressures measured on cold tires also vary with ambient temperatures.

    Re: done with circle k

All I can say is wow. This is taking it to the next level.

    Re: done with circle k

The nitrogen business is all a myth. "Air" has over 78% nitrogen in it already. It's just not worth the bother.
