    tried both TT with Tip and Stick, i do believe you got a stronger pull from the engine compared to manual. i would say if you want speed, Tip is the best way to go... manual just make things a more complicated with you busy shifting, working out both upper and lower body.... well, on the other hand, life is complicated too, so manual is fine with me knowing it is slower than Tip S.

    It's great to have choices ;-)

    For me, I won't come close to exploiting the full potential of the TT so extracting the last iota of performance is not as important as having fun and having that involved feeling. Plus I am leaving LA so traffic won't be the issue anymore...

    Your dealer is the last person on earth you should consult about modding. He's the guy who can void your warranty. Maybe they're more reasonable in Greece?

    This is an incomprehensible statement. A manual gearbox has a built in overload mechanism which is the clutch. The clutch is designed to fail before the transaxle. The automatic transmission does not have such an outlet. Automatic transmissions fail through excessive heat which "cooks" the transmission fluid. Once that occurs, the whole mechanism needs to be rebuilt/replaced. They may be rated at different torque capacities but a manual box will not "burn up" catastrophically like a traditional automatic.

    You must not have owned any '60s British cars

    The torque "fuse" was the transmission lay shaft in many Triumph drive trains.

    In ANY drive train, manual or automatic, the "fuse" is the weakest link in the chain. I'm not so bold as to predict which element it will actually be in every case.

    You know, it's just possible that RC knows some facts about which you are unaware. For instance, do you know the sustained torque capacity for each transmission type in a base-version 997TT? I bet he has some good info about this.

    It is in no way incomprehensible to me that the Tip might have more reserve torque capacity than the stock 6-speed. One possibility is that the same Tip hardware package will be used for the uprated engine output of the "S" model when it arrives. In the 996TT, the X50 6-speed package required an added cooler to safely handle the extra power.

    Seems logically possible to me

    I say go for the manual no matter if the wife wants to drive or not. My wife can drive a manual. It's not rocket science to drive a manual. Besides to me I just can't get with an automatic sports car. Kinda takes away the fun.



    Personally, I'd never let my spouse drive my sports car, unless I were too drunk to get home .



    Hmm. "LET my spouse drive MY sports car" All I can say is wow. My wife can drive anything we own at anytime. Hey if something happens I can just get another one.

    I'm serious. Get her a nice, safe convertible or whatever she may like, but she won't be getting her hands on the good stuff, and I especially would never buy a car with an automatic so she could drive it. We have different perceptions, but while I believe in sharing a house (hopefully ), the cars should be off-limits, unless we're talking about the family beaters.

    The 5spd tip is based on the same unit used in my E55. It's torque capacity is very healthy no doubt about it. But the G96 6spd is also a stout tranmission that can and has been used in various modded 996tt's to no end and should hold up very well in the 997tt as well. The difference is that you can change out a clutch with upgraded friction surface, flywheel, pressure plate etc to improve capacity whereas with an autobox you cannot.

    Sorry but we view the Porsche in different ways. I don't buy any car just for me or just for my wife. Althought the 997 cost crazy amounts it is still just a car. Hopefully nothing will ever happen but if it does that is why we have insurance.

    PS. Like you I would never buy an automatic. My wife can drive a manual.
