    brake recall - specifics

i visited my local ( medium ) friendly dealer today to get some info on the brake re-call, they were nice enough to give me the following 3 pgs.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

    2.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

sorry guys for some reason unknown to the computer almost literate the scan is not up-loading. heres what i found out;it's technical information bulletin w622 ( workshop campaign ) dated 9-21-06

    it affects both iron and pccb cars # 102- 787 the scope of the repairs are;

scope 1- iron brakes rear axle- replace brake calipers.
scope 2- iron brakes rear axle- replace brake piston damping plates and brake pads

scope 3- pccb, retrofit brake piston damping plates on the front axle and replace brake pads, replace brake calipers on the rear axle
scope 4- pccb, same as above on both axles but no caliper relacement on either axle.
scope 5- pccb, same as 3 but no caliper replacement.

it indicates that the purpose of the re-call is to deal with the issue of clearly audible squealing noise coming from front and or rear axles when braking in certain enviornmental conditions.

    hope this helps some

    Re: brake recall - specifics

Good to know this should be a thing of the past on future cars. thanks

    Re: brake recall - specifics

    roadtrip,

Are you going to have your 997TT brakes corrected? Anyone else with a 997TT that fits within the VIN numbers? I'm debating on mine.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

    mike,

interesting, i'm also debating as to whether or not to have this done... at this point it's basically a non-event to me in terms of annoyance..... i'm also of the opinion that if it's not broke don't [beep] with it....i'd be seriously pissed at my self if it came back from the fix and didn't feel EXACTLY the same as when i brought it in....perhaps others in the same quandry will have thoughts....i guess today i wouldn't get it done....the dealership here has one porsche certified mechanic...gulp

    Stan,

I know, these brakes have such great feel almost like your foot is on the pavement, I don't want them messed up either.

I cannot believe you posted this. There is a recall on your brakes and you are debating whether to take your car in?

    Re: brake recall - specifics

Believe it. Don't consider a slightly squeaky brake a big issue. I have over 1000 miles and have only heard it 3 times under very slight braking.

    Mike

    Re: brake recall - specifics

Hey guys, this isnt only for the turbo right? Carrera aswell?

Cause mine squeal like a piglet in heat if you know what i mean.

    Cheers in advance.

Mike if it was an unimportant or trivial issue, Porsche would not be recalling the car for brakes.

Be smart and take your car in.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

I don't think it's a big issue. Porsche has rec'd complaints and they are responding in proper fashion by not ignoring this. If this gets worse or it becomes convenient for me I'll certainly consider.

smiley has a different condition and should get this corrected.

    Mike

    Re: brake recall - specifics

I have one of the earliest cars and now it has 5500 miles on it. Never ever heard a squeak, not once and will certainly not take it to the dealer to mess with it. Just my opinion .

    Re: brake recall - specifics

Just to make something clear: this is NO RECALL but a VOLUNTARY Workshop Campaign. There seems no safety risk to be involved and this campaign is only intended for a certain number of cars with a specific VIN number.
Although the affected VIN numbers are contained in a certain VIN range (83102 to 83787), this doesn't mean that all cars in this VIN range are affected.

My car is also within this VIN number range and is NOT affected (well, there is a squealing noise coming from the PCCB brake system but apparently it isn't strong enough to make my car a case for this campaign).

    Re: brake recall - specifics

thanks rc. you've reinforced my decision to do nothing unless things get a whole lot worse.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

Thanks RC. Like roadtrip I'll sit tight for the time being. As a practical engineer I belive in "If it ain't broke don't fix it!".

    Mike

    Re: brake recall - specifics

My car falls within the VIN range and the rear brake squeal is so loud it could shatter glass. Mine is going in next week for the fix. If it were just a minor squeal or no squeal at all, I'd sit it out as well.

    Re: brake recall - specifics

I forgot to add something: the VIN number range is for US/CANADA bound cars only, NOT for ROW or European Turbos. Just overlooked this thing, maybe this is the reason there is no "fix" for this in other regions.
