I find it incredible that according to a news article today in our local paper that the MB SLR(which has yet to be priced but clearly in excess of $400,000) is completely sold out in the US. At a charity function one sold for 2.1 million.
Yet the Carrera GT which clearly is superior car by any measure has available allocations and pricing on new ones entering the US and for resale are in the $500,000 range.
PLEASE DO NOT CONSTRUE MY COMMENTS AS DEROGATORY CONCERNING THE CGT. I honestly like to know why this is happening. If I had to hazard a guess it would be related to what Porsche did to the marketing of the TT and 911.
Completely sold out? I doubt this statement. Maybe the allocation for this year?
And if true, which again I DOUBT, maybe because a lot of people (including me) have the impression that the Carrera GT is just a "justification", an alibi if you want so, to build the Cayenne. "Look, we can build fine sportscars too" is the message and some people really think that Porsche just built the Carrera GT because of the Cayenne.
Well, after spending a few hours in Leipzig, I can assure you guys that this is NOT true. Porsche put a lot of passion and work into the Carrera GT and I'd say right now it is the best new supersportscar people can buy for that kind of money.
Another explenation for people maybe choosing the SLR over the CGT is maybe the fact that some of them don't have a clue what they're buying. The see the name "McLaren", they hear about the power figures and of course there is always that specific prejudice towards Porsche supersportscars that they're not driveable (too stiff, too sporty, not roomy enough, etc.). Exactly the contrary is the case.
The new SLR looks like an aftermarket supped up SL and it looks horrible. There is no "harmony" in the car's design.
Give me the money for the Carrera GT and I buy it IMMEDIATELY. I fell in love with this car and as soon as it is sold out, people will regret they can't buy it anymore.
The SLR is a huge disappointment and if AMG would have the "courage" to start selling the SL65 AMG, the SLR wouldn't sell a bit anymore.
