Complicated Controls

My car is still 9 months away, but I've been reading an owners manual to get familiar with the knobs, dials, controls, bells and whistles, etc.

I'm certainly no rocket scientist, so I'm concerned that I may be in way over my head regarding all the techno stuff that the manual describes. Some of the features can only be operated when the car is moving. To me that is scary. Am I going to have to learn this stuff as I'm zooming down the freeway at flank speed? Is there some sort of Link Trainer that I could practice on?

I've never been a fan of navigation gizmos, i Drive, in car telephones, and the like, so some of this is frightning to me. I'm about throw up my hands. I've read 155 of 308 pages of the OM and I'll still haven't read the voluminous PCM manual.

Is it possible to just get in and drive it like a normal car?

You must have a lot of time on your hands.

I've found that the 997 manual is pretty dry reading. I tried once and I gave up after about 10 pages. I've had to refer to the manual when I couldn't figure out why my NAV would set the map to a fixed location and wouldn't move. The manual was pretty useless in trying to explain how to undo this. It was only after really playing with all of the buttons was I able to "unset" the map.

So my advise is: don't bother with trying to read the manual.

What's your 'normal' car?

I figured out most of the features playing with the buttons, when stuck, read the manual. To me, it's not difficult at all.

I pointed the way for Larry. It's not a manual for the 997TT but rather, just the 997C2S, etc.

Personally, I've never read the owner's manual unless I needed to. I'd sooner learn everything by playing with the car.

Over the Hill,

Don't fret about the manual. It's not that bad, just lots of pages. I've had my car for a week and I'm just getting throught the first third of the manual. PCM tome will be later. Believe me, it does not detract one bit from enjoyment of the car. Like others have said, a lot of it is fairly intuitive.

There are only about 7 instructions that are important

1.) Press Key FOB to open doors
2.) Put key in ignition on left of wheel
3.) Engage Clutch
4.) Start engine
5.) Put in first
6.) Disengage clutch
7.) Put gas pedal to floor

Everything else is optional

Over the hill,

I have a 97 993 C2 as my daily drive. It has none of the fancy electronics. Just got my 997TT and am still reying to get all this stuff figured out. Bottom line is not too hard and as mentioned it's best to just drive the car and learn. There is not much you can to hurt the car so down be afraid to just drive and learn.

I'm still trying to figure out how to set the nav system to point not North but the direction I'm heading (maybe someone here knows how to do this?).

For me it's too much electronics (and I'm and EE) but it comes with the package, so just drive and learn and most of all just have fun. It is truly an amazing car thet you will enjoy driving.

BTW how does know if the overboost is working??

The following instructions were followed for a simple road trip down the west coast of the States from Vicrtoria, B.C. to San Diego, a step 8 is important while driving 4,000 miles ... stop for refueling!!!

"There are only about 7 instructions that are important

I believe when in map mode, press set and it'll give you the option of pointing where you're going instead of North. Good luck, let us know if that doesn't work.

Mawyatt,

The overboost function is confirmed if the little arrow to the side of the boost reading goes on (I think). Make sure Sport is "ON" and steering wheel pointed straight!

After engaging sport mode, the gas pedal has to be "quickly floored" to make overboost available. Once floored, the power is increased from 2100 rpms to 5000 rpms; diminishing from 4000 rpms to 5000 rpms, where it ceases to be present. The upward arrow (present adjacent the bar boost gauge) will still illuminate after 5000, but it is only indicating that it's still available although not present anytime after 5000. If you were to let off the gas and do the same after the revs fell below 4000, this would repeat itself. You can not activate overboost above 4000, it is only present after 4000 once it has been activated below 4k and then only to slowly bring the power back to norm after 5k.

Love the car. Have about 1000 miles and just added 1/2 liter of oil. Went out to some twisty country roads yesterday and had a blast. Like the adaptive sport seats, they hold much better than the standard seats in my 993C2.

Thanks guys for the inputs. From the posts here I guess I won't be alone trying to figure this stuff out when I get the car. BTW, just finished reading the Carrera OM. Probably pretty much the same for the TT. Not much of a plot, but it does make a case for being an Rocket Scientist as prerequisite for ownership.

I only read manual when I need to learn something (e.g. how to change a light bulb etc)...but ONE thing was this system for memory seats which kept on resetting the seats to previous owner who is much shorter than me :-) => so reading again lol...overall it is very intuitive and my wife was programming stations in the PCM after 2 minutes she sat in the car :-)

I read it once right after I got the car and apparently retained enough to know that it's worth looking up something. I never refer to it while I'm cruising around, since I keep it in the trunk. Mostly, I just press buttons and see what happens. I figure the worst I can do is loose my radio presets.
