    If you had $50,000 cash...

If you had $50,000 cash to spend on a Porsche, what would you purchase and why would you make the choice?

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

It really depends. what are your priorities? Will it be a daily driver, week-end car, track toy?

For this budget, you might go for:
    - a 2007 base Boxster or Cayman with very few options. Brand new, only 2 seats, arguably underpowered, but still fun.
    - a 2006 Boxster S, certified pre-owned, with low miles and some nice options. The same with more power, more goodies, and almost good as new.
    - a 2002 3.6L 911 Carrera, certified pre-owned, Coupe or Targa (glass top), 2WD or 4WD. This model is no longer produced, but you'd own the legendary 911.
    - a 2001 3.4L 911 Carrera convertible, certified pre-owned, 2WD or 4WD. This one is the last model year with the plastic rear window. Or buy a 2002 model privately (no guarantee though).

All those are perfectly usable as daily drivers. The next two are only week-end, fair-weather toys, but are more fun and will not depreciate:
    - a 964 Speedster. This model is highly sought after. It's a limited edition, spartan convertible similar in spirit to the RS America. My personal favorite. The soft top is a pain to use, though: just keep it open.
    - a 964 Turbo 3.6: the last single turbo model. This one is maaaaad, but you might need to get used to it.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

I'd get the new boxster. Best value for the buck

Original 73S, great 73RS clone with wonderful upgrades, 964RS, Mint lo-mile 993C2 - all great fun to own & drive - much more fun than a base Boxster with no options...

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

My preference would be a late model 993C2 or C4 if I could find one with low miles.

The Boxter is too cramped for me personaly, and I do not find the Cayman visually appealing...just my opinion.

The car would not be a daily driver, and I would not be running it on the track except for maybe a few laps at PIR if\when the opportunity presents itself.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

    993!

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

Add my vote to a 993...something like this > http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ca...mp;cardist=1171 (no affiliation, just I am partial to the 993 aerokit)

    Or take your $50K, borrow $5K - $10K more and pick up a one-owner 997C2 with 10K miles.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

987s with extras. Way better than getting an older 911. You wont get anything that handles as well as a Boxster at 50K.
    Good luck!

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

    I'd probably go with a 993 Carrera 2.

I beg to differ My 73RS was less money than that and it is pretty incredible in the handling dept. Of course it weighs over 1,000 lbs less than a 987...

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

I've been looking over a few websites, but the prices seem rather high.

    For example:
    http://www.willhoitenterprises.com/inventory.htm
    http://www.nwicars.com/sport.htm##porsche

I'm pretty much set on a low mileage 96-98 993 like this one:

You'll always pay much more from a dealer than from a private party. Also, that car is a C2 "S". The S will always have a significant premium. They look beautiful, but they actually have worse performance than a C2...

Grant. Sorry, you are absolutely right. U can even get a Lotus Elise for that money. I meant the Boxster is a perfect balance between safe, usable everyday car and extremely well-balanced sportscar.
The Boxey is no match for 100% dedicated purist sportscars.

I am not aware of a difference in performance between the C2S and C2. Could you give an example of how the C2"S" model perform worse than the C2?

It's not a big difference, but the S is heavier and wider, so it is slower to accelerate (weight) and has a slower top speed (more wind resistance). The wider rear end causes more understeer in the corners as well. The regular C2 can already fit 11" wide rear wheels, so there's no need for a wider rear (except that it looks cool)...

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

Thanks Grant...figured it was something like that.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

Sorry but a lot of misinformation above...

3,131 lbs for the "S" vs 3,075 lbs for the regular one.
    0-60mph in 4.6 vs 4.8
Top speed 182mph vs 177 mph.

Sorry but the weight is more than offset by the hp and torque increase. Also the width is exactly the same (71.18 in), only the 4WD have the wider body and even more extra weight (3,252 lbs. for the C4S)...

If you can afford it buy the "S" version, you won't regret it.
Actually shame on P for bringing the non "S" version that had no hp increase over the 996, or at least the "S" should have had the X51 engine, and/or significantly less weight.

SciFrog- Your points are well made when talking about the 997....but Neeso's opening post was seeking ideas to find a $50K Porsche, so the thread steered into talking about low mileage 993 for sale within $50K price range, thus generating the C2/ C2S chassis and weight comparison for the 993 model.

IMO it would've been nice if Porsche had bumped the 993 C2S by 20 horsepower back then to compensate for the S model add'l weight and to distinguish further from C2...but with the final years of the 993 reaching 282 HP they had probably already pretty much maxxed out the practical HP to be extracted from the last iteration of the air-cooled 3.6L.

In Europe, some of the 993 Carrera models had a 3.8L motor with 300hp+ (from the 993RS) instead of the usual 3.6L. I'm not sure if the 3.8L powerkit was only available on the S or not. However, the 3.8L was never offered in the US...

For 50K I would either get a late 996 or one of the first 997 C2.
Not a big fan of anything outside of warranty...

The outside look of the 993 is a must, granted. Maybe the nicest 911.
But could you really leave with the inside on a daily basis?

After sitting in a 2007 C4 this afternoon, I must agree with your comment on the 993 interior.

Woe is me...$50k is going to turn into $85 if I keep snooping the dealership.

The 993 Carrera S had the same wider (Turbo) body as the 993 Carrera 4S, at least in Europe, and I assume this was the same for the States. You could still order the "normal" body as 993 C2 and C4, Targa (2) and Cabrio (2 + 4), from MY 96 with 285 HP instead of 272 HP, due to the added Variocam (HP for Europe) !!
The 993 4S was available from MY 96, the 993 S from MY 97, AGAIN at least in Europe.

    The powerkit X51 - 3.8L - 300 HP - 355 Nm (993 Carrera RS Motor) was available for the whole range (in Europe) : C2 + C4 + Targa + Cabrio (2+4) + CS + C4S.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

I hope they start offering the GT3 engine in a cab for the US.

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

But it's probably a very long shot

Re: If you had $50,000 cash...

I've had a 1999 and 2001 996 and sold the latter for a 1997 993 C2. I couldn't be happier (after adding Mille Miglia sport mufflers, Kinesis 3pc. lightweight wheels, RS clutch/lwf, RS mounts, sways and Bilstein PSS9 coilovers. This car has increadile soul despite the fact that it's not nearly as refined, fast and comfortable as more the more modern 997/Boxster/Cayman's are. Although a 997GT3 is a definite in a year or two I still couldn't imagine ever selling this car.

I love your spec. I'm sure it must be a dream to drive.

    I'm envious
