If you had $50,000 cash to spend on a Porsche, what would you purchase and why would you make the choice?

I've been looking over a few websites, but the prices seem rather high.
For example:

http://www.nwicars.com/sport.htm##porsche
I'm pretty much set on a low mileage 96-98 993 like this one:

You wont get anything that handles as well as a Boxster at 50K.
Good luck!
I beg to differ My 73RS was less money than that and it is pretty incredible in the handling dept. Of course it weighs over 1,000 lbs less than a 987...

You'll always pay much more from a dealer than from a private party. Also, that car is a C2 "S". The S will always have a significant premium. They look beautiful, but they actually have worse performance than a C2...

I am not aware of a difference in performance between the C2S and C2. Could you give an example of how the C2"S" model perform worse than the C2?

Sorry but a lot of misinformation above...
3,131 lbs for the "S" vs 3,075 lbs for the regular one.
0-60mph in 4.6 vs 4.8
Top speed 182mph vs 177 mph.
Sorry but the weight is more than offset by the hp and torque increase. Also the width is exactly the same (71.18 in), only the 4WD have the wider body and even more extra weight (3,252 lbs. for the C4S)...
If you can afford it buy the "S" version, you won't regret it.
Actually shame on P for bringing the non "S" version that had no hp increase over the 996, or at least the "S" should have had the X51 engine, and/or significantly less weight.

IMO it would've been nice if Porsche had bumped the 993 C2S by 20 horsepower back then to compensate for the S model add'l weight and to distinguish further from C2...but with the final years of the 993 reaching 282 HP they had probably already pretty much maxxed out the practical HP to be extracted from the last iteration of the air-cooled 3.6L.

SciFrog- Your points are well made when talking about the 997....but Neeso's opening post was seeking ideas to find a $50K Porsche, so the thread steered into talking about low mileage 993 for sale within $50K price range, thus generating the C2/ C2S chassis and weight comparison for the 993 model.

The outside look of the 993 is a must, granted. Maybe the nicest 911.
But could you really leave with the inside on a daily basis?

In Europe, some of the 993 Carrera models had a 3.8L motor with 300hp+ (from the 993RS) instead of the usual 3.6L. I'm not sure if the 3.8L powerkit was only available on the S or not. However, the 3.8L was never offered in the US...

I've had a 1999 and 2001 996 and sold the latter for a 1997 993 C2. I couldn't be happier (after adding Mille Miglia sport mufflers, Kinesis 3pc. lightweight wheels, RS clutch/lwf, RS mounts, sways and Bilstein PSS9 coilovers. This car has increadile soul despite the fact that it's not nearly as refined, fast and comfortable as more the more modern 997/Boxster/Cayman's are. Although a 997GT3 is a definite in a year or two I still couldn't imagine ever selling this car.
