    New Paddle Shift Transmission?

Is Porsche doing this? If yes, when will it be here? (

I could not find in the search but I have seen it mentioned.)

    Re: New Paddle Shift Transmission?

PDK for the standard 997 series (i.e. no TT, GT2, GT3) is likely to be introduced at the IAA 2007.

    Re: New Paddle Shift Transmission?

If the new Gt2 wont be PDK i will DEfinetely go for a Lambo...

Have you driven the lambo e-gear?!?! Horrible!! Might as well just pack it in, and get a lexus...

    Re: New Paddle Shift Transmission?

If they offer paddle shifters on a 997, I'm gonna be on that like an Etheopian kid on a burger. They put it in their new race car, that might be a sign that its in the works:

Excerpt: "Power is sent through the tough-as-nails triple plate carbon-fibre clutch six-speed sequential transmission and with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters for control."

Based on my information the GT2 is not likely to be offered with PDK (at least not at the time of introduction)

This is Porsche's PROBLEM not ours...
Let them invest only on caymans and panameras... I really dont care anymore...
When the new Gallardo will be out with the 550hp e-gear and RWD i want to see the faces of Porsche marketing team...

    Re: New Paddle Shift Transmission?

think the next "MY08-MY09" gallardo will be offered RWD ?

    Paddle shifters are horrible

E-gear is clunky. F1 is not great either. SMG is horrible too. Only one that gets a nod is DSG (call your Aud, Bugatti, SEAT, VW dealer for more info).

It's still like velco fasteners for your shoes or clip on bow-ties. Faster maybe, but no satisfaction doing it.

The people I know who bought paddle shifters became dissolusioned and frustrated before they had owned the cars for even a year and all of them traded in for stick shifts. Unless it's a pure track car your gain nothing on the street of any value anyway.

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

Lol Le chef you are wrong.. I own a F430 and the trasmission is from an other planet... When i drive me 997s i think i drive a prehistoric car...
New Egears nowadays 2006models are also very good !!

Do you know why they have horse races and lots of people attend them, because everyone does not think alike, as for me, I think paddle shifters suck the big one, sort of like an automatic, been there, done that, they are fast - who cares, I don't track anything, but like to drive , oh well, what do I know.

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

I dont say you dont know...
I am just asking one thing... Have you ever driven a FAST car (not golf gti dsg) with this kind of gearbox ?!
I am saying that because from the time I drove my F430 i am in love with the F1 system... (take under consideration that all my cars were manuals (993, 996 GT3, 997 Cs ) and now after I drove my F430 i cant stand the manual gearbox anymore.. (OFCOURSE I PREFER it than a Tiptronic gearbox)

Finaly take under consideration than the new 997 GT2 will be the very best 911 of Porsche cars so Porsche HAS TO put in this car the latest technlology.. Also i cant give for this car 250.000 Euro + (as this is going to be its price here in Greece) and not have a PDK option because porsche preferred to invest on caymans boxsters cayennes and panamerras...

    Drove my friend's 430 with F1

And I could be the village [beep] for all I know, but for me the F1 gearbox sucked big time. It might be fine for the track (it can do "fast" very well but that's all it can do) but it can't make smooth changes, and don't try and reverse park the car. In other words it's a bit monolithic in its approach to gearbox management. Even Ferrari acknowledges this as they have hinted a true DSG is on the way.

btw. Ferrari push this gearbox because they make something like an additional $15 million out of sales above a stick shift. No wonder they try and convince everyone it's better!

But it all still comes down to driving a car vs. driving your Playstation - the choice is yours as to what you think you're capable of and best at.

It was a good thing to invest in boxsters. Else they may have gone belly up...remember? :-)

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

    Absolutely right .... Boxster and 993 bailed-out Porsche ...

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

A forum riot over paddle-shifting?? Great!! I'm with Le Chef on this one, 100%. Without my left foot managing the engagement of the engine to the drive wheels, I feel like I'm racing from the back of a limo... "Jeeves? Oh Jeeves!!! Could you please serve up an upshift right away? Chop-chop!!"

It's faster, but it's a step backward from the "man & machine" experience, where you control all aspects of power delivery.

I think drive-by-wire bites a big weenie too, although Porsche's calibrating is better than most. I can always tell that there's an "interface" between me and my throttle-body, and it pi$$es me off.

Technology isn't always the avenue toward superiority, when it comes to physical experience and adreneline. Remember the "Orgasmatron" from Woody Allen's Sleeper?? It was hilarious in theory, but the way you hear folks lauding the "electronifying" of their driving experiences, you'd have to imagine that there exists a strong market for such a chamber these days...

Anyhow, there's a big difference between technologies that enhance the act of driving a sports car, and technologies that eliminate control-aspects of driving a sports car. Call me an old-fart at age 39, but I don't giggle like grade-schooler when a small android hooked to my throwout bearing and shift linkage takes over the "too challenging for mere mortals" stuff for me. The "isn't that clever" effect fades in a matter of one lap. Maybe if I was being chased by Imperial forces I'd appreciate R2D2's assistance, but when I'm just out for fun, he needs to just sit back there and keep to himself, or I'll jetison the sucker...

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

Oh man dont get me started on transmissions. I am leaving this subject, it irritates me. f@+k TipS longlive PDK.

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

PDK all the way, who needs a 3rd paddle

    Re: Paddle shifters are horrible

"But it all still comes down to driving a car vs. driving your Playstation "

Driving your playstation, never thought of it like that, but it makes absolute sense

    Re: Paddle shifters vs manual

After I finally mastered heel and toe in my last DE, it's a special feeling!!! You will probably won't get with the paddle shifters...
