    Sell, keep, sell, keep?

I'm faced with a small dilemma:
I'm trying to sell my 986S and planning on getting a 987S 3.4l.

I have to pay appr. 210,000$ (in Danish Kroner) for a new 987s and I expect to get around 110,000$ for my 986s.
Sales have been slow, and since I have to get a new car before Jan 1 2007 (tax deduction etc) , time is slowly running out.

    This got me thinking;
Would it make sense to keep the 986s and give it a cosmetic overhaul and perhaps even get it tuned?
The car's value will only drop very slowly from now on, whereas a new 987 will cost me a lot in that dept.

My 986 is in very nice condition visually, and only has a few minor problems mechanically. It has 105,000 km (appr 64,000 miles) on the clock and runs smoothly.

I'd like the 987S for a number of reasons: + BHP, interior, PASM ect - but I am in no hurry. I could wait a year or two if need be.

I was also thinking about getting a Lotus Exige or Opel Speedster for the track. This could be done if I dont upgrade to a 987s.

    Any advice?

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

I'm new to Porsche ownership (MY07 2.7L 987) and in my limited experience with all my other cars the minute you contemplate selling and decide not to do so and instead start doing anything cosmetic, all you're really doing is delaying the inevitable and throwing money away.

I'd have thought now is an ideal time to look at a new 987 as (I presume?) no major mods/upgrades are imminent with the recent engine upgrade, whilst if you look to buy in a year or two you're nearer to something else being updated so the "oh I'll just wait a bit longer" syndrome kicks in and you never do it.

I fell in love (sad!) with the looks and interior of the 987 so I didn't look at all closely at the 986, but, and no disrespect intended to 986 owners, the 987 does appear to be a much more honed and refined car just from a look and feel point of view.

    Just my random ramblings

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

I fully second what Phil said above. From my own experience I know that once I start playing around with the idea of getting a new car or tuning the current I end up spending more money as I tune just to find out I want a new car anyhow
My opinion: save money and get a new one!

paul, youre quite right. The 987 is a better car, and it should be. Which of course is why I want one.
However, the premium I have to cash out (100,000+ $) to upgrade + the slow sale of my 986 makes it worthwhile to stop and think.
I HAVE decided to get a 987. It's only a matter of when.
I have already stopped concidering other types of cars and other makes. There truly is no substitute. At least not in my income bracket.

True, messing around with the 986 is just a waste of $.
Sadly, so is getting a new 987.
    Argh!

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

If you wait another year you will probably lose another Euro 2000 on your current car, and the new one will rise by 4% ??

I personally would be looking for a new car delivery in July - you have a good chance of selling your own car in May/June when the soft top market is in full song - you'll also probably get the same trade in then as you would April/May.

Either way its going to cost you a considerbale amoutn of money to change - you never make money on cars, just emjoy them

Why would getting a new 987 be a waste of $?

Maybe you need a little positivity - Imagine driving your new 987 (+ BHP, interior, PASM etc) off the showroom floor! I don't think you'll look back, its a real step up from the 986. If you've got the cash its money well spent and life's short!

No! Do it properly - drive it away from Zuffenhausen!

Oh, I agree. I also live by the same motto
And I wouldnt look back when I pick up the car....but I do have a few practical things to consider.
One being the fact that I need a new car BEFORE Jan 1 07 for budget/company finance reasons.
Getting a MY 07 by then isnt really easy unless I pick a car that's already specced, and most showroom cars are ZzZzZZZZzzzz...
Silver, grey with same interior. Not really a load of fun.

AND I need to sell my 986 first.

It's a waste of $ in the sense that its value will decrease rapidly the first 1-2 yrs. The 986 wont drop much more in value.

    Decisions decisions

    Oh, I'd looooooove that!!!!!
Trouble is that particular experience will cost me $$$$$$, since importing an existing car as opposed to building one to spec may be a lot cheaper.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Tough decision yes, but a nice position to be in. Good luck, hope the right decision comes easily.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

get a cayenne turbo....remove the back seats and put a cage in the back...that should reduce the tax bill

U Danish? It's actually true. A "yellow plate" Cayenne with no backseats and a rear compartment dedicated for cargo is a LOT cheaper in taxes that a "White plate" one for passengers.

Cayenne Turbo with all seats: Appr. 350,000$
Cayenne Turbo with cargo area: Appr. 160,000$

Yup, those two seats are VERY expensive, which is why 90% of all Cayennes in Denmark are cargo versions.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

    Doc,

Move to America, get away from those high taxes/prices, then get your 987 or 997!

Or...if I were you, I'd get the 987 year end for the best deal?

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Just remember that the money you spent on tuning you will never get them back! So maybe the best option is the sell and buy the new one. Good luck anyway!!!

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

    Tough choice...!!
I guess it all comes down to you being willing/able to spent that extra $100000 ( lots of monney for a Boxster).
If not you could keep your current car for another year and re evaluate the situation next year

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

If for tax reason, you may consider sell 986 a little bit low since you get the tax break for the 987 and enjoy more for the 987 till your next dream car coming...
PS. the price you mention is Euro or DK?

Fsdell, the price is DK converted to USD, so you guys know what I mean.
A fully loaded Boxster 987S is appr 1.4 mio Danish kroner on Danish plates, which is appr. 235,000 USD.
I think I can get appr. 600-650,000 DKK, perhaps less? (max 110,000 USD) for my old 986.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Wow, that is expensive. A 987 S in the U.A.E. will cost you appr. 51 000 USD, fully loaded - 65 000 USD. The benefits of living in a tax free country.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Christ and I thought cars were expensive here in the UK!

How does the Danish system work then, there must be some evil taxation going on, buy for what reason - is it the same with any/all vehicles or are "performance" vehicles targeted?

All vehicles are taxed appr. 180% on top of of its sticker price.
All but military, royal, government, diplomat and ambulance vehicles. Taxicabs have a 20% tax - and a lot of rules for selling them on to private users.
Then we have that cargo-tax, which is cheaper than regular tax, but requires the car to weigh more than 2 tonnes total (incl. allowed cargo) and have a dedicated cargo area of certain minimum dimensions behind the driver's seat.

There is no way around the system.
Many have tried...and best case failed, worst case had their car empounded for years and years.

They talk about lowering the taxes, but they have been talking ever since I was a kid...so prolly nothing will happen I fear

Nope. According to Danish DMV statistics, as of March 2005 there were a total of 1040 Porsches in Denmark on white plates (registered for regular transportation).
700 of these are from before 1985!!
300 on yellow (cargo only) plates - most of which are Cayennes.
In 2004 there were a total of 84 Boxsters in this country.

So Nick Berry, hows that for exotic!?

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Here we pay 10 % gst, 47% luxury car tax over $51,000 plus the West Australian State government adds anothe 6.5%. But it looks like our pollies can learn from the Danes!

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

Cayman with feature SAND (sandbags permenantly installed in front trunk to increase weight) and feature CARG (large cage in place of normal rear trunk lid) for cargo.

Sorry to hear the the politicians make having fun difficult. But I guess there are other benefits to living there, otherwise everyone would leave.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

when i had a 986 it was always my, un-fulfilled , dream to put in a 996 x-51 engine. i think that would be an engaging ride and definitely doable with deep enough pockets...sorry i couldn't offer more real world constructive advise.

    Re: Sell, keep, sell, keep?

I say keep the 986 if you're happy with it. I had an new '05 987S from 2/05-2/06 and loved it (Seal/Blk) but sold it because I really wasn't driving it much. THen I picked up an '04 986S Anniv Edition, and except for the cosmetics (personal opinion), I really can't tell much of a difference in terms of power on a day-to-day basis. In fact, the steering on the 986S is a bit more feelsome to me, and I really like the full leather interior with the alum bits inside of the 986SE compared to a non-full leather all black interior of the 987S. To get a '07 987S optioned with full leather, bose, xenons, alum, wheels, etc, the cost was 50% more than the used 04 986S (only 5K miles) - $60K vs $40K; i could not justify the '07-
