    Audi R8

I got to spend some time looking at and sitting in the new Audi R8. Overall, the car is a very handsome and pleasing shape, though in some ways its design is overdone and a little gimicky. I'm not sure whether the "side blade" works as well as Audi wanted, but it is certainly a striking element. The engine looks very cool under the glass hood, surrounded by alot of carbon fiber pieces. The car doesn't seem to have much luggage room, less than a 911 or a Boxster. The interior is very initimate and cozy with a vertical glass window right behind the two occupants separating the interior from the engine compartment. The interior itself uses materials of different textures, shapes, etc - I'm sure one would get used to it after a while but when you first get in the overall impression is interesting but overdone. It is the antithesis to Porsche's stark interior design. On the other hand, the amount of carbon fiber used in this car, if fitted in a 911 would have Porsche charging 20K extra (it's all around the engine compartment, the interior etc).

When they started the car, the exhaust sounded just great - a real bark to it and I'm sure at th 8K redline this car really must shriek.

I came to think of it as a "poor man's" Ferrari - it is more like an Italian car in design (but a F car, not a Lambo - probably on purpose). When compared to a 911 C4S, the R8 seems like alot of car for the money. Assuming it drives as well as it would seem based on the specs, I think it will be a very serious car to consider in the 110K price range and it may be the car that forces Porsche to change a bit.

    Re: Audi R8

Very nice review. I personally think that the R8 is too furturistic looking for me. It may be a real performance contender but lacks emotion and character.

    Re: Audi R8

    Very cool review, thanks .

    Re: Audi R8

    Price?

You mention $110k, that's with options right?

Maybe in USA is different, but with the numbers we have available in Europe (Audi Deutscheland page), 140K euro (arrounnd) with extra options (no ceramic brakes).

I think the R8 looses a lot of the attractive it could have with that price (You have second handed Gallardo's, almost new for very near figures)....but still, only internet numbers. I have to go to a dealer and have the actual price...but I feel that those "promises" of an "interesting" price are not real.

    Re: Audi R8

    A well optioned R8 will be in the $115K - 120K range

    Re: Audi R8

Up until the introduction of Audi R8, Porsche C4S and TT really do not have a competitor in their price range. The closest thing that comes to mind is an SL55 but that is more of a GT (heavy) rather than a sports car. IMHO, the R8 offers a porsche-alternative to potential porsche buyers looking for more "emotion", better engine sound, supercar or semi-supercar styling, and realiability of a major German make. I think the R8 will do it. Similarly, I think a v-10 R8 will be able to battle and take sales away from tt. At least it has an effect on me as I am considering it. Porsches are fine cars but Porsche's problem is they just meet the customer's expectation rather than exceed it.

    Re: Audi R8

    Very good report indeed.

The design of the R8 may not be as coherent as that of a Gallardo for example, but the car surely is a great first attempt for Audi in the sports car league.

And BTW if you say this...

... you have to remember that Ferrari would charge you about 40k.

    Re: Audi R8

Check out the 'ring video on this site featuring the R8 and a 997GT2, the R8 sounds phenominal. I think it is a hell of a car for the money. It WILL give porsche a run for their money in the 90-110k price range.

in spain the car is priced at 120k euros base.....why does the US seem to get a pricing advantage

The net price (before VAT) in Germany is 87.7 k Euro for the 6spd manual and 93.9 k Euro for the R-tronic (and I guess the net prices are equal all over Euroland - like with Porsche).

These net prices would translate into net prices of 110 kUSD (118 kUSD for the R-tronic version).

So indeed Audi may sell the car somewhat cheaper in the US (based on the guessed price of 110-120 kUSD for a "well optioned" car - incl. VAT

This is nothing new, as all European carmakers ask less for their cars in the US (stronger competition in the US market).

    Re: Audi R8

I think Audi does a very clever job regarding the R8. They "positioned" the car somewhere slightly above the Porsche 911 but not too close to the Lamborghini Gallardo.
The reason? Simple: they don't create additional competition for Lamborghini and at the same time, they offer a more "exotic" looking alternative for the Porsche 911 without being too "exotic" compared to the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Bottom line: I think that the R8 will be a pretty succesful product in Germany, especially the 420 bhp version.
Not because it is a very good sportscar (this remains to be seen) but because it is priced in the 911 range (even if slightly above) and offers a more spectacular look without creating too many bad feelings or envy in people since this is "only" an Audi. I know this sounds weird but I think this is part of Audi's strategy for the R8. The 500 bhp version will be targeted at a slightly different audience but similar priced as the 997 Turbo with a few options, probably slightly below the Gallardo.

This strategy may actually work but I really don't like the front of the R8, it looks a bit too much like a Bugatti-Audi mix to me. The rear of the R8 is beautiful, almost perfect. I'm also happy to see that the Audi designers seem to have much more taste than the Porsche designers regarding the exhaust pipes.

Believe it or not but I think that in a couple of years, the R8 will be one of the "major players" in it's price segment and it will also cost Porsche a lot of 911 sales, not sure they're aware of it.

    Re: Audi R8

I agree with you completely. Whether Porshce is aware of it depends on what changes they will make to the 911 in the next year or so.

    Re: Audi R8

I'm really liking this car, be great if they can bring it in under 100k US

    Re: Audi R8

They corrected the article to (around) 100K.

Yeah, I really believe the car will be well under $100k before options and tax...

    Re: Audi R8

That price would be more reasonable
