    2008 Skyline spypics...

    Quote:
The enthusiast world has been waiting for the next Nissan Skyline for some time now, particularly American enthusiasts, who are set to get their first factory-sanctioned taste of the performance legend when it makes it into US showrooms for the first time.

Looking very close to the sensational GTR-Proto concept shown back in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the 2008 Skyline appears to be in its final stages of development, as evidenced by these KGP Photography shots of the car caught testing at the Nürburgring.

While all previous Skylines were sedan-derived, the new model will reportedly gain its own two-door architecture, which bodes well for the car from a performance standpoint.

Prevailing rumors have the car taking on a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, itself derived from the engine in the 350Z. Power bogeys put the mill in the range of 450 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of twist. In true Skyline fashion, the car will be all-wheel-drive, with a further evolution of the GT-R's electronic ATTESA ET-S torque-sensing system, tied into a four-wheel steering system.

All of which should be good for a 0-60 miles-per-hour time of well under 4 seconds, and a top speed somewhere on the ambitious end of 180 mph.

Interested parties might want to start inquiring with their local Nissan dealers now.

Wow, this car looks great!! The wing is excellent. Fits very nicely.

Looks like Porsche is getting it from all sides...

    exactly my thoughts..

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

Looks fantastic, but I worry it is going to be too heavy. Porsche seems to be able to keep most of its cars reasonably light weight, where as most manufacturers seem to really struggle with that.

not if you ask any true Porsche enthusiast

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

    Looks really nice.

Not sure how much this car's going to weigh though. The 350Z isn't a light weight and it doesn't have AWD + AWS.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

i still can't get over the size of the exhaust tips...

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

    I can't wait!

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

    Price range?

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

Damn check the size of those exhaust tips!

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

This will be as much competition to the 911 as the Z350 is to the Boxster or Cayman... simply two different classes. This may compete with the new upcoming EVO or a Vette for example, maybe even the new M3, but the 911 is a completely different market.

But its nice to always see that the benchmark for all comparisons people do is always a Porsche

Nonsense! This car is aimed squarely on the 911. With its price point at about $70-80K, you can bet the 20-30 somethings who were thinking about buying a 911 will surely find this as a viable alternative.

Especially, since it has never been offered in the US.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

The Skyline is a different type of concept, more apealing to a younger crowd who don't look away from aggresive styling such as big spoliers, intakes, large exhaust ect., cheap simple interiors, but big engine performace with high-tech AWD's and gadgets, much like the EVO/Impreza crowd. Later those may move up to a 911, but normally these two concepts are not considered at the same time in the life line. Its like comparing a Corvette to a AMV8.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

We can debate this till the cows come home, but, the bottom line is: cars such as this Skyline and the Audi R8 combined with others like the the Acura NSX are going to put a lot of pressure on the 911.

I would bet in the coming years you'll see a sharp decline in 911 sales due largely to stiff competition. I think that even POrsche know this, which would explain why they want to bring the long defunt 928 back.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

Agree completely with svtrader1. With the very freshly designed AMV8, R8 and (to a lesser extent) this new Skyline GTR, I for one would not even consider a 997. Not to mention that there will be a new Dino coming from Ferrari..!

If one needs to experience the 911, why not get a used 996 instead of a brand new 997.. similar proportions, not-too-different performance, at half the price.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

Those exhausts!!! wonder how this thing will sound and it will perform good, no doubt about that...

I dont think so. The Porsche market is aimed at people like me who have always wanted a Porsche. Young people get old and then they will also want a Porsche. Niche market

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

Porsche has had this competition in the previous years, as a matter of fact two of those that you mention are new versions of previous exiting models. And cars such as the Dino or AMV8 are to low production to even matter.

Same old story herd all over again, but the truth is that the 911 is the benchmark and the king for over 40 years and current production numbers and sales show that its even better than ever! The 911 has its own niche, it has several generations of followers, and offers a unique package that is unmatched by any other manufacturer that appeals to a greater and greater target population. Other sportcars come and go, but the 911 is the greatest success in sportcar history and shielded from any market movements.

Were I see Porsche can have more competition problems is with the Boxter/Cayman platform, were they have no such things that the 911 has, many similar products from the competition, and a very changing and unprecitable buyer base in that segment.

And the 911 success does not mean that they cannot expand to other markets such as the SUV and now the 4-door saloon (the 928 was a 4 seater coupe not a 4-dooor saloon) much to the dismay of other car makers.

Seriously! You would need like 5 potatoes in each one to block it completely! Those have to to be the biggest stock exhaust tips i've ever seen! If they are indeed production ones.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

I think the cars looks good and it will have enough power to be a threat to Porsche....then drop $5K of tuning in the car and it will whip just about anything out there.

It is obvious that Porsche is getting nervous from the competion that is hitting them from all sides now. The only way to survive for Porshe is to cover as much market ground as possible. I found this on Autoblog.com

Porsche plans 10 new models by 2010

Porsche plans 10 new models by 2010
    Oct 10th 2006

Motor Trend put together a list of future vehicles to come out of Stuttgart over the next few years and although most of the vehicles listed have either already debuted (Targa, GT3 RS) or are common knowledge among devout readers of Autoblog (GT2, Panamera, 928), the article contained a few minor revelations, in the form of new models and technological hurdles.

Naturally, the first order of business is the new variant of the 911, predictably dubbed the 998, which has hit the displacement equivalent of a brick wall. Porsche's engineers have found that the flat-six engine is ill equipped to manage more than 4-liters of displacement and in an effort to achieve the expected increases in performance, the 998 will focus more on weight-saving materials, such as aluminum and will come equipped with a DSG transmission to shave those valuable tenths.

Motor Trend also reports on the development of a small SUV to slot in underneath the Cayenne, which will be based off of Audi's new Q5. The new 'ute will have more performance potential than its Germanic sibling and is expected to come in a three-door body style. The comparisons to Porsche's foray into the Dakar Rally are inevitable, so this new vehicle will have massive shoes to fill if it ever sees the light of day.

Other models worthy of note include a Cayman RS, which will serve as a stripped down model of Porsche's mid-engine masterpiece, although power upgrades from the factory will be minimal as to avoid competition with the Cayman's rear-engine big brother. The new Carrera GT is also on the drawing board, but Motor Trend cites insiders as saying that the new mid-engine, V10 super car won't make it to production until after this decade.

From the shape of the body, you can defintely see the commonality with the G35/350Z.

    Re: 2008 Skyline spypics...

The weight, P has to focus on that. And more HP for the N/A 911.

Nissan development team talked about a lot of carbon fiber materials to save weight for the next GT-R and those tires look pretty slick to me.
