    Oil Level Readings

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this - yesterday I switched on ignition and saw that oil level was just above first bar in the scale - which was a bit odd as I'd topped the oil up a couple of days ago. Switched ignition off and then back on again and this time it was showing the level at the third bar. This was a couple of hours after I'd last driven the car.
Exactly the same thing happened today so would be interested to know if it has happened to other owners?

    Re: Oil Level Readings

Its not the most reliable thing in the world, but for those without a dipstick its all you've got !!

I generally check mine each morning - whilst the oil isn't at operating temperature at least i know all the oil is drained back into the sump, and its ensures consistemcy of reading methodology from one day to the next.

    Re: Oil Level Readings

Oil level readings are best checked before starting after the vehicle has set overnight. Otherwise god only knows what it will say!

    Re: Oil Level Readings

My reading is very consistance. I has been at the same level for the past few months and I check it every time before I drive

    Re: Oil Level Readings

I had my oil changed, 9 quarts including the filter and a week later it was a bit above the top bar. No

Even a dipstick is not consistent if the oil reading is not taken under consistent circumstances, such as car always standing on level ground and reading taken after the engine has been switched off overnight. Most people couldn't be bothered to use an oily dipstick so frequently or note readings so precisely as to notice inconsistencies.
On the other hand, an oil-level gauge is so easy to use and readings can so easily be mentally noted (remembered) that a one bar change looks like a huge jump in oil level.

Using this same methodology (read gauge before first start every morning on a level garage floor) I find my oil-level gauge readings to be pretty consistent.
I disregard the sometimes "alarming" readings I might get at brief gas-station stops.

    Re: Oil Level Readings

I understand the correct way to take a oil level reading is only after the car engine is up to running temperature and circulated. This is the only way how a Porsche technician would take a reading.

It will take longer than the 6 seconds when cold at start up though.

    Re: Oil Level Readings

AAAhh just had my oil changed at 6k miles. voluntarily!!!
Looks full on the marker, nothing is changing.
I love the feel of the car after its first oil change, all systems checked out. I did it just to know my ride is clear of all the break in crap in the oil...blah blah..This car needs a dipstick, no way to get accurate reading when it keeps reading different marks, mostly I would worry about it being overfull...right?

    Quoting the manual:
"It is best to measure the engine oil level before embarking on a lourney (if the vehicle has not been driven for an extended period) or with the engine at operating temperature. Shorter waiting times are achieved in this way."

So reading level with cold engine is obviously an "approved" option. I don't even understand the reference to "shorter waiting times".

From my own casual observation it gives pretty consistent results when I do it on my own level garage floor before starting up in the morning. I've found tank stop readings with hot engine to be less consistent, but do not profess to know whether this is due to oil not have properly drained down, or maybe barely perceptible floor gradients variations. Probably the former.

Service techs generally have to check oil level hot, because that's how it is when the customer drops off the car.

Where the 911 Turbo or GT3 engines are concerned oil level CAN only be checked hot, after engine has been idling for a minimum period, and with car stationary on level ground. If these parameters are not given, the gauge won't even give you a reading.
    Obviously a completely different system.
