I understand the correct way to take a oil level reading is only after the car engine is up to running temperature and circulated. This is the only way how a Porsche technician would take a reading.
It will take longer than the 6 seconds when cold at start up though.
Quoting the manual:
"It is best to measure the engine oil level before embarking on a lourney (if the vehicle has not been driven for an extended period) or with the engine at operating temperature. Shorter waiting times are achieved in this way."
So reading level with cold engine is obviously an "approved" option. I don't even understand the reference to "shorter waiting times".
From my own casual observation it gives pretty consistent results when I do it on my own level garage floor before starting up in the morning. I've found tank stop readings with hot engine to be less consistent, but do not profess to know whether this is due to oil not have properly drained down, or maybe barely perceptible floor gradients variations. Probably the former.
Service techs generally have to check oil level hot, because that's how it is when the customer drops off the car.
Where the 911 Turbo or GT3 engines are concerned oil level CAN only be checked hot, after engine has been idling for a minimum period, and with car stationary on level ground. If these parameters are not given, the gauge won't even give you a reading.
Obviously a completely different system.
