Swiss 997tt caught on fire (correction: 996tt)

    http://www.20min.ch/news/kreuz_und_quer/story/10897290

Anybody know what happened here? Looks like a Swiss 997tt was driving 310kph on the autobahn and caught on fire last night.

Re: Swiss 997tt caught on fire

If you look closely you'll notice that the tailights are above the rear fender line and that this turbo is actually a modded 996 tt. Interesting but I can't read swiss.

It was a tuned 996 Turbo, owned by a swiss software developer who just wanted to testdrive his tuned car on the german Autobahn at top speed (A96...great Autobahn for driving fast, lots of nice curves).

My theory: the exhaust system got too hot and ignited the fire in the rear fender.

One reason why I repeated myself over and over again: DO NOT tune your 997 Turbo yet since we don't have enough experience with the new VTG technology which actually produces even more heat.

The software developer and owner of that tuned 996 Turbo claims that his car was tuned to 550 HP, this is probably what was officially stated in the car's documents. Judging by his claim that he drove over 363 kph (speedo reading) when the engine started to make problems, I'd say that he didn't say quite the whole truth. I suppose this car was tuned to 600 HP or even more and it was too much for driving it at top speed for a couple of minutes or even less. Some people don't seem to understand that although the 996 Turbo is a great car, more than 150 HP than stock power are NOT reliable and can even pose a danger.

Bottom line: be careful with tuning. If you're living in a speed limited country, this may not be a problem but as soon as you drive the car on the Autobahn, don't be surprised if it goes up in flames. This isn't the first time it happened.

Thanks, RC. Your words of waiting on the modding are well worth following.

Could it be because Swiss don't actually have a language of their own

    Watch it, son!

Just kidding Actually, we have at least about 26 own languages which no outsider can understand. And German is our first foreign language.

I'm afraid this isn't quite right. German is one of three official state languages, not a foreign language. Just for the book.
The Swiss Constitution names four official languages in Switzerland: German, Italian, French and Rätoromanisch (sorry, don't know the english word for it).
Three languages are official state languages, Rätoromanisch is only official state language in combination with citizens from regions where this is the official language (sounds complicated... ).

This doesn't mean that all Swiss speak all four languages, they need only one, all others are actually "foreign" languages for them.

Also the German spoken in Switzerland is not quite the German spoken in Germany. Even most Germans don't understand "Schweizer Deutsch", it took me over a year in a swiss school to understand (and partially speak) swiss german.

I LOVE English...it enables people from different countries and cultures to communicate with each other. Great stuff.

I can only comment on the French. A very slight accent a few expressions and appart from that it is 99% "FRENCH".
    (French Canadian would be 60% ! )

That's good to hear. Once I brush up on my French (I never though one could forget an entire language in 5 years), I'll go and test your theory .

    TEE1,

You have roughly 23 mins editing time left to go back and read RC's post all the way through, and consider if you want to review your post.

As a Canadian that speaks french as a second language, the Swiss speak french in a way that is fully understandable to me. Maybe they don't understand me, but seriously, the French of Canada and the French of CH and France are as similar as US and British English. There are expressions that are different, as well as accents, but well over 90% of the language is the same.

Now take a person that speaks Quebecois 'slang' and all bets are off! A language on to itself.

Re: Swiss 997tt caught on fire

    What a story!

He should have taken a clue from the bright exhaust glow--and reacted faster to the flames coming from the tail!

Re: Swiss 997tt caught on fire (correction: 996tt)

My standard 996 turbo caught fire whilst it was sat in my garage 2 years ago.I had come back from work and the car had been sat for about 20 minutes in the garage when my wife smelt smoke,I went down to see and the whole engine was on fire.It nearly blew up the house and kids .
Porsche definitely had a problem,I know of at least 2 others who it happened to as well.

What did the insurance investigation bring up? When something like this happens, you need to do a full scale investigation incl. involving Porsche in this.

I heard of some cases where the heat protection of the exhaust was damaged (don't know how this can happen, it is impossible that it falls off itself without any reason) and the engine bay caught fire. This is NOT a common problem with the 996 Turbo, I can assure you that.
